    La scienza dell'amore e i suoi limiti

    Get PDF
The Science of Love and its LimitsAbstract: To investigate love as a natural phenomenon entails subjecting this aspect of human life – up till now considered evanescent, impalpable and deeply subjective – to the scrutiny and understanding of contemporary science. The natural sciences continue to modify our intuitive concepts of love suggesting that even in love man is much less free than we like to think. Nevertheless, once we discover the extent to which we are constrained by our biology even where love is concerned, something remains that contemporary science cannot explain. At this point in its natural history, the claims made for love appear weakened but love is still alive and – precisely for this reason – perhaps even more heartfelt. Keywords: Love; Neurosciences; Naturalization; Brain Chemistry; Evolutionism

How the Brain Represents Itself: Some ConsiderationsAbstract: The approach proposed in this paper starts from the assumption that neural and mental levels must strictly correspond to each other, even though a reciprocal causal relationship between them must be excluded. Neural and mental events are considered univocal facts that can be addressed differently, depending on whether one is interested in understanding the mental or the neural level. This epistemological approach can be summarized in the following way: “everything neural corresponds to something mental, and everything mental corresponds to something neural”. Describing the principles of this correspondence is the final aim of the areas of study identified as neuropsychology and cognitive neuroscience. The insular cortex, which is situated deep within the sylvian fissure between the temporal and frontal lobes is involved, among other things, in the production of the subjective sensation of the Self, called interoception, which is used to represent the viscera and constitutes the primary basis of self-consciousness.Keywords: Insular Cortex; Interoception; Representation; Monism; Subjectivity

    Get PDF
Clinical and Anatomical Observations in the History of Neurolinguistics: Studies Predating Paul BrocaAbstract:Classical neurological and neuropsychological handbooks usually cite Paul Broca’s communication on the frontal lobes as the seat of articulated speech (1861) as the starting point in the history of the study of apha-sia as. In their seminal study, Benton and Joynt (1960) have collected numerous observations of aphasic patients from the Greek, Latin Medieval and Renaissance medical tradition and from the eighteenth-century Enlightenment literature. In none of the reported cases, however, were the crucial elements of aphasia, that is, is, on the one hand the distinction between language deficits, conceptual damage and speech disorders and, on the other hand, the association with lesions of the left brain hemisphere – clearly identified. The first part of this article describes the work of Johannes Schenck and Johannes Jakob Wepfer, two medical scientists in the sixteenth and seventeenth century, whose studies are almost entirely unknown. Johannes Schenck (1530-1598) completed a collection of clinical observations including both reports from antiquity and from his contemporaries. In his first volume (Observationes medicae de capite humano, Basel, 1584) he considers the major diseases of the head and face. At least 16 of these observations refer to patients with aphasia. Johannes Jakob Wepfer (1620-1695) published several texts on neuroanatomy, brain vascularization and apoplexy. He gathered a collection of neurological cases (Observationes medico-practicae de affectibus capitis internis externis), which was published posthumously. At least 15 of the 222 observations included report the presence of aphasia. As expected, in almost all cases, aphasia was due to lesions in the left hemisphere. Wepfer, however, does not seem to have noted this asymmetry. In the second part of this article, the extraordinary study of Jean-Baptiste Bouillaud (1825) will be reported: Bouillaud outlined the basic principles of anatomo-functional correlations in neuropychology and applied these principles in order to confirm empirically the role of the frontal lobes in language and speech production. Keywords: Early History of Aphasiology; Early History of Neuropsychology; Anatomo-Functional Correlation of Language; Mind-Brain Relationship; History of Scientific Thought

From “Superorganic” to “Superorganismic”. A Possible Dialogue Between the Humanities and the Neurosciences on the (Model of) Language

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to briefly assess, from the point of view of a linguist, the main contributions that experimental results and theoretical assumptions in neuropsychology have made to linguistics. The “neuromaniacal” fascination witnessed over the last three decades in linguistics is often bitterly criti-cized, suggesting a different approach to building a promising dialogue between the humanities and neurosciences – one sheltered from reductionism, which has proved so detrimental to many of the approaches developed so far. Keywords: Models of Language; Biological Foundations of Language; Localizationism; Anthropological Linguistics; Superorganic vs Superorganismic Approaches to Language.

    Get PDF
Mind and Brain: Epistemological and Clinical Misunderstandings on the so-called “Integration” of Medication with Psychotherapy. Abstract: Psychoanalysts or psychodynamic therapists who consider the so-called “integration” or “combination” of psychotherapy and medication to be problematic reveal a stereotyped theory of technique that may lead to errors even in therapies without drugs. In fact, the happenings within the therapeutic situation are not interpreted but taken at face value: drugs are seen as “something else”, separated from the so-called "psychological” intervention (i.e., only the latter should be interpreted or understood). This approach seems to be anti-psychoanalytic, being based on a sort of labeling theory. It is not clear why medication should not belong to the same conceptual category as any other intervention or fact within the psychotherapeutic situation. Pharmacological interventions are always associated or combined with non-pharmacological interventions, so that the true alternative is not between psychotherapy and medication, but between “psychological interventions” and “psychological interventions associated with medication believed to be psychoactive”.Keywords: Integration of Medication with Psychotherapy; Combined Treatment; Mind-Body Problem; Theory of Psychotherapeutic Technique; Epistemology

    Get PDF
Neuromania, Darwinitis and the Misrepresentation of Humanity. Planet of the Apes: A Critical Examination of Raymond Tallis’ Idea of “Neuromania” and “Darwinitis”Abstract: This paper presents a critical examination of Raymond Tallis’ Aping Mankind. Neuromania, Darwinitis and the Misrepresentation of Humanity. The main themes are summarized and briefly discussed. Tallis presents some of the most extreme reductionist interpretations of contemporary neurosciences, and labels them “neuromania” and “darwinitis”. He proposes instead a non-reductionist philosophical naturalism, one that, according to him, is able to value the latest scientific achievements, without reducing the importance of other humanistic branches of knowledge. Keywords: Naturalism; Neuroscience; Philosophy of Biology; Raymond Tallis; Scientism

Come pecore al macello? Ebrei nella Shoah e reazioni alla persecuzione

    Get PDF
Like Sheep to the Slaughter? Jews in the Shoah and Reactions to Persecution Abstract: While most psychosocial analyses of the Shoah focus on psychological issues relating to the behavior of the perpetrators, this study examines similar issues in relation to the victims. Eschewing from a homogeneous representation of Jews as going to their death like sheep to the slaughter, the aim here is to characterize the psychology of the victims and their daily actions in the face of persecution. The content analysis performed on a pertinent body of contributions from the historical, philosophical, sociological, psychological and memory literatures – has identified the contribution of numerous factors. These factors do not so much relate to particular characteristics of the victims themselves as to relationships between members of the minority and majority over the course of time. Moreover, they related to strategies employed by the victims to cope with ongoing persecution and specific actions of diversion by their executioners. Mostly neglected by post war historiography, this evidence for a marked reliance on “unarmed reactions”, further contributes to articulating the representation of the victims. Keywords: Shoah; Jews; Reactions to Persecution; Psychosocial Analysis; Content Analysis

    Get PDF
Neuroethics: The Birth of a New Kind of Anthropology? Abstract: This paper proposes a view according to which the specific field of neuroethics is conceived as an exploration of what we learn about ourselves and our “functioning” thanks mainly (but not exclusively) to neuroscience. In other words, neuroethics proposes a new kind of anthropology dealing with the intersection of various disciplines (cognitive neuroscience, philosophy, psychology, law...) which becomes ever more pertinent in current debates due to the strong naturalization of research concerning the human beings. The subject of study – in light of its new and controversial features – would thus not be what we can do, but what we know or reliably think we know. Keywords: Neuroethics; Anthropology; Neuroscience; Immanuel Kant; Law
