Structural Decoration in 14th-Century English Domestic Interiors: An Alternative Interpretation of Change in Timber Architecture
Previous interpretations of the development of English timber buildings stressed the technological improvements brought about by new methods of roof construction. The
present study argues that that does not explain sufficiently the reasons for the developments which took place. Beginning with a consideration of the growing use of decoration in structural timber, it is argued that clients sought to enhance the appearance of the interior of their houses. In particular, they wished to emphasize the height of the hall and to integrate the roof space into the volume of that room. To do so, they needed to raise, reduce or remove tie-beams and to draw the eye upwards into the roof space. The last few decades of the 13th and the whole of the 14th century are identified as a period
of change, which laid the basis for yet greater levels of decoration in the domestic interior from the beginning of the 15th century.</p
Archaeology, public participation, wellbeing and gender – does being female make a difference?
This paper explored the impact of gender on the wellbeing impacts of participation in hands-on archaeological excavation. It reviewed data from 13-15-year olds taking part in the 'Higher Education Field Academy' (HEFA) intended to develop skills, raise aspiration and boost self-esteem, and in members of the public excavating within their owm communities. The paper reviewed quantitative datae from previously unpublished reports of HEFA outcomes, and a new thematic analysis of text-based feedback from the latter cohort. Themes identified were social connection and belonging, learning and personal growth, empowerment and confidence, joy and emotional fulfilment, mindfulness and presence and community and shared purpose. Comparing data from females and males in both groups indicated the benefits experienced by females may not be significantly different to those experienced by males, but they are often accessed and expressed differently: pathways to empowerment differed between the genders, with women feeling they gained validation and inspiration, men confidence and leadership trust. In shared purpose women’s responses focussed more within their team and men’s more on opportunities to help other teams. In conclusion it was noted a larger study might be useful as previous gender-focussed studies of this topic have tended to favour males. </p
‘In the manner of heir loomes’: Matrilineal pedigree at Doddington Hall, and its expression in material culture
This paper explores how Lincolnshire heiresses Elizabeth and Sarah Hussey shaped dynastic identities at Doddington Hall during the eighteenth century, despite societal constraints.
Notwithstanding their marginalised legal status as femme covert, recent research into Doddington’s eighteenth-century interiors has uncovered previously overlooked evidence for the sisters’ active engagement with estate management. Through analysis of their will-making practices, the paper will argue for the women’s deliberate mobilisation of the house and its goods to disseminate their keen sense of pedigree through their bloodline. Furthermore, and responding to the challenges posed by the limited archival visibility of Elizabeth and Sarah, I will demonstrate how an imaginative research methodology exposed the sisters’ enduring influence. Blending conservation practice with archival research, interpreted through the lens of gender studies, the paper will propose that Sarah’s descendant, John Hussey Delaval, built on his grandmother and great-aunt’s legacy by projecting an elite male identity through engagement with the Hall he had been carefully bequeathed by his female ancestors.
In highlighting these previously hidden narratives, the paper will contribute to dialogues that challenge assumptions about early modern women’s roles, by emphasising their agency in maintaining dynastic continuity through engagement with the house and its goods.</p
Counterterrorism and Freedom of Information: what stands in the way of data access?
Data is difficult to access for researchers in the fields of terrorism and counterterrorism studies. This can be improved through using Freedom of Information Requests. However, these are under-utilised, and we know little about request success rates. This article investigates the use of FOI requests to get data on UK counterterrorism practice. We submitted requests to 55 local authorities asking them to release their information sharing policies for Prevent. We found that while FOI is a useful tool for gathering data, there are indications that requests are being improperly handled, and that centralization responses could increase the difficulty of accessing information.</p
Taking Newton on Tour: The Grand Tour Travel Diary of Martin Folkes (1690-1754)
This volume provides a critical edition of an exceptional example of the ‘Scientific Grand Tour’ taken by Martin Folkes. Martin Folkes (1690–1754) was Newton’s protégé, antiquary, mathematician, and the only simultaneous president of the Royal Society and the Society of Antiquaries. In 1733-5, he went on Grand Tour as a scientific ambassador for the Royal Society, demonstrating Newtonian optics to Italian virtuosi. He also measured ancient and Renaissance buildings to understand past architectural engineering and design. His 97-page illustrated diary (in the Bodleian Library at the University of Oxford, shelfmark MS Eng. misc.c.444) also challenges the long-standing, mistaken impression among scholars that the Royal Society was in decline in the eighteenth century. Analysing Folkes’s activities abroad and creating an edition from this source tracing his Italian route provides a novel reading of Newtonianism and the purpose of the Grand Tour as a vehicle for scientific research and statesmanship.</p
What Determines Tolerance of Intimate Partner Violence Against Women? Evidence from Pakistan
Intimate partner violence (IPV) has multiple emotional and psychological effects. Globally, 1 in 3 women have experienced IPV in their lifetime. Pakistan ranks 142 in the list of 146 countries on the global gender gap index. By using data of more than 15,000 households from The Pakistan Demographic and Health Survey (PDHS) from 2018, this paper aims to explore the factors affecting the tolerance of violence against women in Pakistan. While there is existing research focusing on the factors linked to IPV, there is non-existent literature quantifying the tolerance of IPV against women. Results suggest that the two most significant factors linked to tolerance of IPV are (i) the level of education of a woman and (ii) the male partner’s employment status. An educated woman was 29.5% less likely to tolerate IPV, whereas the employment of a husband was linked with a 16.5% reduction in the likelihood of tolerating IPV. Moreover, the social networking phenomenon is also correlated with the reduction in the probability of tolerating IPV.</p

As co-guest editors, we confront the mechanisms of ‘passing’ and ‘covering’ that marginalise authentic voices in the field. The issue foregrounds subjectivity, emotion, and exclusion, and calls for an expanded discourse rooted in solidarity, discomfort, and transformation. </p

The fourth series of Studies in Medieval and Renaissance Sources (first published in 1964 as Studies in Medieval and Renaissance History) provides a unique venue for scholars to offer fresh readings of evidence from the period 400–1600. This annual is dedicated to the fundamental scholarship of analysis and interpretation led by direct engagement with the sources—written, visual, or material—in any form, from editions, translations, and commentaries to reports, notes, and reflections. By foregrounding the most basic approach of working outwards from the evidence, the annual aims to foster conversations across disciplines, regions, and periods, as well as to become a reference point for original approaches and new discoveries. </p
Thermodynamic States in Non homogeneous Systems:From Nanoscale to Macroscale
We analyse the mechanisms leading to thermodynamic stable states and isobaric phase transitions in finite non-homogeneous nanosystems using classical molecular dynamics. We consider systems ranging from nano to macroscopic scales and focus on spherical Lennard-Jones nanoparticles, in both one- and two-phase equilibria. In particular, we investigate how these systems' macroscopic behaviors evolve as their size increases. Our findings unveil that non-homogeneous stable states are governed by spatial variations in intensive variables, contrary to standard thermodynamics of homogeneous systems where equilibrium is described by extensive variables. Crucially, we demonstrate that non-homogeneous intensive variables persistently diverge from homogeneous systems predictions, even as the system size increases. Our calculations show that one-phase equilibrium is the direct consequence of the spatial variations of these intensive variables. In the two-phase equilibrium, such variations generate isobaric phase transitions across finite temperature intervals, through a continuous sequence that includes three-phase states. These temperature ranges do not vanish with increasing size, challenging the assumption that homogeneous systems are the asymptotic limit of finite non-homogeneous systems. Our findings highlight the significance of boundary effects in understanding thermodynamic stability and equilibrium mechanisms, marking a departure from standard thermodynamic models that neglect these variations.</p
