REGENERACIÓN NATURAL DE LA SELVA ALTA PERENNIFOLIA EN EL PARQUE ESTATAL AGUA BLANCA, MACUSPANA, TABASCO, MÉXICO
The tropical rainforest is one of the bestdeveloped and most complex ecosystems, yet is undergoing very rapid deterioration. The alternative course of recovering itrequires knowledge of the process ofregeneration. The objective of this researchwas to evaluate the process of naturalregeneration in a high evergreen forest relictin Agua Blanca State Park, Macuspana,Tabasco, as well as to learn the floristiccomposition, measure species diversity andfloristic similarity, and analyze physicalfactors (litter depth, litter cover, crowncover, soil moisture, and pH). Two samplingunits of 50 X 50 m were established, each divided into 25 subunits of 10 X 10m, in which four plots of 1 X 1 m weresubsequently set up at random. To conductthe regeneration study, all individuals ≤1.30m and ≥1.30 m were censused and their lifeform determined. Measurements of physicalfactors were carried out in each 1 X 1 mplot. A total of 152 seedlings representing46 species and 20 families are reported.Rinorea guatemalensis was the species withthe highest number of seedlings. The indexof diversity was H’ = 3.7 in sampling unit 1and H’ = 3.0 for unit 2. Floristic similaritywas 27%. There was no correlation betweenthe number of individuals and number ofspecies for each of the factors analyzed. We conclude that the high evergreen forestrelict is in the process of regeneration asthe species of tree seedlings reported arecharacteristic of a primary forest.
BROMELIADS: TRADITIONAL PLANT FOOD IN LATIN AMERICA SINCE PREHISPANIC TIMES
Bromeliads are monocots that have beenconsumed by natives in Latin Americasince pre-Hispanic times. The principalways bromeliads are used as food sourcesinclude the whole fruit or another part ofthe plant. They are eaten as a vegetableor prepared in beverages (fermented orunfermented). This study includes localliterature, personal observations and openinterviews with people who know aboutthe alimentary uses of bromeliads. Theresults cover ten countries and 24 speciesof bromeliads which have been reportedand described as traditional foodstuffs. Ofthese, 76.9% have only a single use and23.0% have two different uses. One species(Bromelia pinguin) has three different uses.Even in the present day these plants are stilleaten as vegetables (12 sp.), used to preparebeverages (11 sp.) and/or consumed directlyas fruits (nine sp.). It is important to note thatcontrary to expectations, in Latin Americabromeliads are consumed more as vegetablesthan fruits.

Mexico is important as a producer andconsumer of grains, of which maize isparamount owing to its extensive use ashuman food. The problematic phytosanitaryissue with this crop is the high susceptibilityof the grains to contamination by dangerousmycotoxins produced principally by thegenera Aspergillus and Penicillium. Inthis experiment the antifungal activity ofgobernadora (Larrea tridentata L.) extractswas evaluated on the in vitro growth ofAspergillus flavus and Penicillium sp. Toevaluate the antifungal activity we used twotechniques: the agar-well diffusion methodwith addition of 50 μL of the extract at fourconcentrations (100, 200, 400 and 600 mg/mL) and the agar-dilution method. This194Núm. 32: 193-205 Agosto 2011consisted of making a homogeneous mixtureof the extracts at a concentration of 100 mg/mL and potato dextrose agar (PDA). Theextract activity was reflected in the formationof an inhibition halo in the first techniqueand radial mycelial growth in the second. The results obtained from both techniquessuggest clear antifungal effects, especiallywith ethanol and methanol extracts.

In Mexico one of the most serious problemsaffecting the environment is wastewaterdischarges, especially those from municipalslaughterhouses, because they contain highconcentrations of organic matter, proteins, fats and nutrients, among other contaminants. Owing to the high concentrationsof pollutants contained in this wastewater,it must be treated with anaerobic reactors, which are responsible for the degradationof organic matter, mainly solids and fats. However, nutrients are not completelyremoved, necessitating a tertiary treatmentto remove N and P from this effluent. Because hydrophytes are capable of absorbingthese nutrients, we tested the efficiency ofEichhornia crassipes, Lemna gibba andMyriophyllum aquaticum at removing nitrates, orthophosphates and ammonium fromwater previously treated with anaerobic sys- tems in series. The results showed that thebest hydrophyte to remove nutrients fromthe treated water, particularly the orthophosphates and nitrates, was M. aquaticum, whereas L. gibba was best for nitrates. Allthe three species were efficient in absorbingammonium.
A palynological analysis was performedon the sedimentary cover of Laguna Cea,located in the subbasin of the SimpsonRiver in the Coyhaique region of southernChile. The pollen record shows a landscapeevolution from a woodland-type ecosystemcovered by Nothofagaceae (Nothofagusantarctica/N. dombeyi) to a meadow-typeecosystem in which low brush such ascalafate (Berberidaceae), herbaceous layerssuch as different types of grasses (Poaceae),and hydrophilic vegetation such as marshplants (Cyperaceae) may be found. Thisstructural change in vegetation occurredapproximately 120 years before present(BP) and coincided with the middle ofthe XIX Century, the epoch which marksthe beginning of colonial settlements andthe consequent clearing and livestockgrazing. The palynological record supportsthe occurrence of fire through charcoalparticles in the sediments analyzed for theaforementioned period, which suggests thatcurrent variation in the landscape of theregion has been influenced by anthropicaction.
MORPHOANATOMICAL CHARACTERIZATION AND ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITY OF TILLANDSIA IMPERIALIS (BROMELIACEAE)
Tillandsia imperialis C.J. Morren ex Roezl isa bromeliad used in Mexican folk medicinemixed with other plant and animal parts as agood remedy for respiratory diseases, whichare one of the main causes of morbility andmortality in the rural population of Mexico. The commercialization of medicinal plantsfor therapeutic use must comply with highstandards for quality, safety and efficacy;structural, microbiological and pharmaceutical studies make a decisive contribution tothis quality control. The aim of this studywas to analyze the morpho-anatomical characteristics and histochemistry of bracts andleaves of Tillandsia imperialis and evaluatetheir antimicrobial activity to corroboratethe effectiveness of this plant for traditionaluses with experimental data. Crude extractsfrom the inflorescences and leaves wereevaluated on Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC29213), Streptococcus pyogenes (ATCC08668), Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922),Streptococcus faecalis (ATCC 29212), Salmonella Typhi (ATCC 06539), Klebsiellapneumoniae (ATCC 13883) and Candidaalbicans (ATCC 10231). Results showedthat T. imperialis possesses important morpho-anatomical characteristics useful foridentification, including mesic and peltate trichomes, tetracyclic stomata and nonsclerotic hypodermis with spherical silicabodies. Microbiological research revealedspecific antimicrobial activity against respiratory pathogenic microorganisms suchas Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes as well as six other bacteria. These results indicate the existence of antimicrobial compounds in the extracts and acorrelation between the traditional uses ofthis plant and the experimental data.
Domesticated plants show characteristicsknown as domestication syndrome, whichenables better utilization of the plants byhumans. Plant domestication has been studied mainly in herbaceous annuals. In thiswork, samples of Byrsonima crassifoliatrees–changunga, the wild form, and nanche, the cultivated form–were taken from theregion of Uruapan, Mexico. The objective ofthis work was to identify genetic differencesby AFLP molecular markers between thesetwo forms. Analysis showed that both wild and cultivated forms of B. crassifolia aregenetically very close to each other. Fruitcharacteristics of human-interest were compared, and some differences were foundbetween the two forms, e.g., in pH, sweetness, mineral content and size. The AFLPanalysis groups together the two forms ofthe tree with a high degree of similarity. The fruits are distinguished phenotypicallyfrom one another, but not at the molecularlevel. Selection pressure to supply themarket may threaten the diversity present inthese populations of plants, which could bea model for the screening of genes involvedin traits such as sweetness and fruit size inaddition to the process of domesticationitself. It is recommended that collections bemade for germoplasm gene banks and alsothat in situ conservation be promoted.
