Quinolizidine alkaloids such as lupanine,13-hydroxylupanine, multiflorine, angustifoline and sparteine, which are present inthe species of the genus Lupinus, have beenreported to have biopesticide and pharmacological activities. The aim of this studywas to quantify the content and variationof the individual alkaloids in seeds of L.mexicanus, L. exaltatus, L. montanus andL. stipulatus collected in different states ofMexico. Lupanine was the major (5.05 ±0.37 mg/g) alkaloid found in L. mexicanus, whereas sparteine was the main alkaloidpresent in L. montanus (3.97 ± 0.49 mg/g).Conversely, L. stipulatus contained onlysmall quantities of lupanine and sparteine(0.1 ± 0.002 and 0.04 ± 0.01 mg/g, respectively). Angustifoline was detected only in L.montanus, but in a very low amount (0.048± 0.03). The results of this study indicatethat L. mexicanus and L. montanus can beconsidered as important sources of lupanine and sparteine for their use as natural pesticide or pharmacological agents. Malpighia glabra, also known as “acerola”or “semeruco” within its wide distributionalrange, produces fruits that have high vitaminC content in their mature state. The objectiveof this study was to reproduce this speciesby planting seeds in germination trays usingthe following substrates: commercial peatmoss, andosol, and vertisol. The percentageof germination was calculated, the numberof germinated seeds per tray cavity ineach substrate was quantified, and growthfrom emergence of the hypocotyl to theseedling was measured. The results showedheterogeneous germination percentagesbetween substrates. The analysis of variancepresented significant differences, showingthe commercial substrate to be the best forgermination and vertisol to yield the highestgrowth rate. We can conclude that “acerola”has the capacity to germinate in any ofthese three substrates; nevertheless, the bestresults are obtained using a commercialsubstrate.

This paper reports the presence of epicuticularwax on the epidermal cuticle of the adaxialand abaxial surfaces of the leaf blade ofSabal yapa Wright ex Becc. Leaf sampleswere collected in secondary growth ofsubdeciduos forest in the State of QuintanaRoo and in two home gardens in the Stateof Yucatan. Wax micromorphology observedwith scanning electron microscopy (SEM)showed two types of crystals (followingthe classification of Barthlott et al., 1998)on both epidermal surfaces. The first typeis characterized by crystalloids calledirregular platelets, which are flat with sinuatemargins and protrude perpendicularly fromthe surface. In their orientation they arearranged like the parallel platelets describedas the “Convallaria-Type”. The other typeconsists of continuous coverings over thestomata that are called smooth layers. Furtherstudies on palm waxes, as well as a refinedclassification, are necessary to compare andclearly define their micromophology andtheir role and importance.

Methanolic extracts were obtained fromboth in vitro and ex vitro tissues of Astrophytum myriostigma to develop a phytochemical profile, probe antioxidant activity(DPPH 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl)and evaluate amoebicid activity againstEntamoeba histolytica HM1-IMSS. Thephytochemical profile results indicate thepresence of different secondary metabolitesin callus and stem; whereas the callus hasphenolic oxidrils and flavonoids, these arenot present in the stem, which may causethe difference in the antioxidant activitybetween callus with an IC50 of 199.19μg/mL and stem with 3961.39 μg/mL. Theamoebicid activity was satisfactory withan IC50 of <100μg/mL for both extracts. The presence of these metabolites in callusof Astrophytum myriostigma is probablydue to conditions and nutrients present inmedia.

Eighty one species of Asteraceae collectedin the Mexican highlands were evaluatedfor their usefulness against the maize weevil (Sitophilus zeamais Motsch). Flowersand leaves of each species were separated, dehydrated, and ground. One hundredgrams of disinfected grains of maize cv.Cacahuazintle were placed in 250 ml glassjar and mixed with 100 g of plant powder.Ten pairs of 3 to 5 day old weevils werethen introduced into each jar. Only grainsand insects were placed in control jars. All the experimental jars were kept underconstant relative humidity and temperature. After 15 days, all the insects were removed and mortality was recorded. Fifty fivedays after the experiment was initiated, F1progeny emergence was assessed. Basedon mortalities ranging from 80 to 98%, thebest treatments were the leaf powders of Aster subulatus, Chrysactinia mexicana,Heliopsis annua, Heterotheca subaxillaris,Parthenium incanum, Stevia serrata, andZinnia peruviana, as well as floral powdersof Thymophylla pentachaeta, Erigeronlongipes, Heterotheca inuloides var. rosei,Senecio flaccidus, and Stevia serrata. Withregard to F1 emergence, the best treatmentwas the leaf powder of C. mexicana, which totally prevented F1 progeny fromemerging.

During the summer of 2004, a study of thestatus of woody vegetation was performed atthree sites in the Tamaulipan thornscrub. Thesites were located in the municipalities ofLos Ramones (S1), China (S2) and Linares(S3) in the state of Nuevo Leon, Mexico. Ateach site three random transects (50 m X 7m) were laid out, and relative abundance, relative dominance and relative frequencywere estimated along each transect. In addition, dasometric parameters, such as heightand crown diameter, were determined. Plantdiversity was estimated by the ShannonWiener index, and similarity between siteswas calculated using the Jackard index. Atotal of 1 741 individual plants belonging to20 families were registered. Fabaceae hadthe highest number of species (10) followedby Euphorbiaceae (4) and Rhamnaceae(4), Rutaceae (3) and Cactaceae (2). Theother 15 families were represented by onlyone species. The Shannon index showedthat there were no statistical differences inbiodiversity between sites; however, theJackard index showed similarity amongspecies only between S1 and S2. The mostfrequent species in the three sampling siteswere Acacia rigidula (255) followed byViguera stenoloba (171), Havardia pallens(167), Karwinskia humboldtiana (132),Forestiera angustifolia and Castela texana(125). This group represented about 56% ofthe total. Less frequent species were: Condalia spathulata (7), Ebenopsis ebano (7),Condalia hookeri (6), Wedelia acapulcensis(5), Cordia boissieri (4), Acacia farnesianaand Yucca treculeana with (3), Heliettaparvifolia (2), Croton torreyanus (1) and Prosopis sp. (1), and they represented onlyabout 2%. S3 registered the highest speciesrichness with a little more than 100% ofthat of S1 or S2. That Linares was the sitewith the greatest species diversity mighthave been due to the higher precipitationrecorded historically.

Sarcocaulescent scrub is the dominant vegetation of the Baja California Peninsula. Themicrotopography of the alluvial plains inthe lower sector of Bahia de La Paz area ischaracterized by patches of soil mounds thataccommodate characteristic plant species, the most dominant of which are shrubby, such as Jatropha cuneata, J. cinerea, Stenocereus gummosus, Bursera microphylla,Fouquieria diguetii, Caesalpinia placida, and Larrea divaricata. We performed testsof independence (χ2 chi-square) betweenpairs of species to analyze relationships inthe grouping of the dominant plant specieson the soil mounds. Results show scarcepositive interactions that behave consistently between the species, suggesting randomclustering of the sampled species. Soilanalysis of the mounds and the neighboringbare zones shows differences in salinityand organic matter content, which impliesbetter nutrient conditions on the mounds. The micro-environmental conditions of themounds identify them as resource islandsthat participate actively in the structure anddynamics of vegetation desert communitiesas here refered.
