TEACHERS’ PERCEPTIONS OF THE USE OF MOBILE DEVICES FOR INSTRUCTIONAL DELIVERY IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN OYO STATE
Mobile devices are small, portable and compact devices, which can often fit in a pocket or purse. Unlike laptop computers, which are expensive, heavy and power-hungry, mobile devices are relatively low-cost, lightweight, and some work for a long time on an electrical charge or using a couple of standard disposable or rechargeable batteries. The study examined teacher’s perceptions of the use of mobile devices for instructional delivery in secondary schools. The study’s population comprises the secondary schools in Egbeda, Local Government Area of Oyo State. 26 schools were involved in the study with 220 teachers randomly selected. The instrument used in collecting the data was a researcher designed questionnaire that contained two sections. The data collected were analyzed using Mean. The result of the study reveals that teachers perceived mobile devices to be useful, easy to use and credible. The study concluded that mobile devices are useful for instructional delivery. Some algebraic properties of soft quasigroups
Soft set theory, instituted by Molodsov is a robust mathematical tool for dealing with uncertainties and problems that are questionably defined. Our aim in this paper is to broaden soft theory by studying some new algebraic operations (product and product divisions) on soft quasigroups. We define soft quasigroups and introduce different algebraic properties connected with them. It was shown that for soft quasigroups over medial quasigroups, the resulting soft sets based on product and product divisions are also soft quasigroups over medial quasigroups. With the new operations defined on soft quasigroups, it was shown that these new operations are distributive over restricted/extended union and intersection operations
EFFECT OF BUDGET PARTICIPATION ON EMPLOYEES’ PERFORMANCE IN SELECTED FIRMS IN THE PRIVATE SECTOR IN NIGERIA
This study investigated how managers’ participation in budgets’ preparation and implementation and assessment could lead to improved employees’ performance in an organisation. The primary source of data collection was used through the aid of a structured questionnaire to seek the opinion of respondents involved in the budgetary process in some selected firms in the private sector in Lagos-State, Nigeria. In addition, the secondary source of data was used to obtain information on the manufacturing and service industries used for this study. The population of the study is 493, while convenience sampling technique was used to select the sample size of respondents from the two specified companies, i.e. First Bank of Nigeria Plc. and PZ Cussons Nigeria Plc. determined by the application of Taro Yamane's formula. Each of the research questions was analysed using Means and Standard Deviations, while each of the hypotheses was analysed and tested for significance at 0.05 level of significance using Multiple Econometric Regression method and t-test statistics. The results of the study suggest that allowing adequate participation of the employees in budget preparation, implementation and assessment will most likely lead to improved employees’ performance
Stress Patterning in Polysyllabic Words among Educated Yoruba Speakers of English in Lagos
English is an isochronous language, hence the dominance of word stress in the language. However, there is a high level of variation in the word stress patterning of the different varieties of spoken English in second-language situations, compared to native-speaker varieties. This study investigates stress patterning of polysyllabic words as used by educated Yoruba speakers of English in Lagos (henceforth referred to as EYSEL), Nigeria, using 100 undergraduate and postgraduate students in tertiary institutions across the state. The participants read 120 polysyllabic words of different syllabic counts into an audio recorder. The stress patterning of the output was analysed statistically. The result yielded seven findings. One of the findings shows that EYSEL usually realise the main stress on disyllabic common nouns, personal names, verbs and compounds on the final syllable. Another finding is that EYSEL realise the main stress of tetrasyllabic words on the final syllable. The study concludes that EYSEL have a propensity for shifting the main stress in English polysyllabic words rightwards
High-Toned Vowel Prefix in Yorùbá
In the traditional analysis of Standard Yorùbá prefixes, high-toned vowels and the vowel u are not eligible to be used as prefixes. There have been various explanations to these phenomenon, especially phonological analysis that justifies the exclusion of these two segments from the list of possible prefixes in the language. In their recent works on Yorùbá prefixes, Awobuluyi (2008) and Ilori (2010) claim that consonants in Yorùbá can be used as prefixes to derive gerunds. This paper argues against these two claims and submit that there actually exists a high-toned vowel prefix, í-, in Yorùbá, and that the nouns it derives are gerunds. It employs the theoretical models of Fixed Segmentism (Alderete, Beckman, Benua, Gnanadesikan, McCarthy, Urbanczyk, 1999; Keane, 2006) and Augmentative Morphology (Halle & Marantz, 1994; Davis & Tsujimura, 2014) to justify the claim that high-toned vowel prefix í- is a fixed segment with a gerundive feature in the language. However, due to some language internal constraint which does not allow for high-toned vowels to begin v-initial lexical items, such derivations are blocked. The need for augmentation of the ill-formed derivation by copying the initial consonant of the root which is then subsequently moved to the initial position of the derived word, therefore, arises to repair the seeming ill-formedness in the derivation
Nigerian Preservice Teachers’ Perceptions of Collaborative Mobile Learning with Google Classroom: A Pedagogical Alternative in the Era of COVID-19 Pandemic
Teaching and learning can no longer be restricted to the four walls of the classroom due to the outbreak of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic in Nigeria. This has necessitated the adoption of online modes of delivering instruction. Consequently, new pedagogical interventions are required as an adjustment to the new normal in other to ensure seamless learning. By drawing on descriptive research methodology, the study designed a Collaborative Mobile Learning Environment (C-MOLE) that embedded google classroom and thereafter implemented C-MOLE in the delivery of a science teaching methodology course to preservice science teachers. Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) questionnaire was used to survey preservice teachers’ perceptions of C-MOLE. This study revealed that preservice teachers had high perceptions regarding the perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness and behavioural intentions to adopt google classroom in collaborative mobile learning respectively. Furthermore, the perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness positively influenced the behavioural intentions to use C-MOLE. There was a significant relationship between perceived usefulness and behavioural intentions to use C-MOLE. Likewise, there was a significant relationship between perceived ease of use and behavioural intentions to use C-MOLE. These results indicated that the three major constructs of preservice teachers’ perceptions of C-MOLE fit into a cohesive model that determines the preservice teachers’ acceptance of google classroom as a pedagogical alternative to face-to-face classroom instruction. The study recommended among others that google classroom should be blended with appropriate learning strategies and adopted in Nigerian universities
Effectiveness of Chemistry Teaching and Learning in Senior Secondary Schools in Lagos State
The effectiveness of chemistry teaching and learning in Lagos state secondary school was the focus of this study. The descriptive survey research design was adopted with five research questions and two hypotheses raised. 98 chemistry teachers and 294 chemistry students in Lagos State Education Districts I and IV were sampled using simple random sampling technique. Questionnaire with a reliability coefficient of 0.82 was designed to collect the data for the study. Data analysis was carried out using descriptive statistics of frequency, percentages and mean. Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) was used to test the hypotheses at the significance level of 0.05. The results showed that chemistry instructional materials are adequately available in Lagos state schools; chemistry students perceived their teachers to be of good qualities with respect to their personality and relationships. However, majority of the teachers still use lecture method of teaching instead of the recommended guided discovery method. Also, the findings indicate that teaching and learning of chemistry in most schools sampled are limited with challenges of inadequate laboratory equipment, lack of modern chemistry textbook, poor funding of chemistry projects and lack of incentives for chemistry teachers. It is recommended among others that government should ensure adequate provision of facilities for all government secondary schools in the state while teachers should adopt modern instructional materials and teaching method
PROPOSED CURRICULUM INNOVATION FOR THE NIGERIAN CERTIFICATE IN EDUCATION PROGRAMMES TO MEET GLOBAL CHALLENGES
The impact of globalization on the education system is overwhelming as it has greatly affected not only the curriculum but also the instructional process. As most training programmes in Nigeria at all levels have concentrated more on teaching knowledge and skills in principle devoid of practical experience in related fields, a process of creating self-awareness and the development of individual capacity for creative and innovative thinking become indispensable. This paper examined the present curriculum of the National Certificate in Education (NCE) as it affects Entrepreneurship Education and used a Needs-Analysis approach to design an entrepreneurship-oriented General Studies Education (GSE) for teachers’ training programmes. A survey method was used, with a questionnaire as the dominant instrument. Data were collected from a sample of 354 respondents (174 lecturers& 180 students) drawn from 18 Colleges of Education across the six states of southwestern Nigeria. The data collected were analysed qualitatively. Both lecturers and students perceived the expansion of entrepreneurship-oriented content in the GSE as necessary and desirable. This paper offers recommendations aimed at promoting Entrepreneurship Education as a veritable tool in alleviating poverty among Nigerian teachers
Optimal Stochastic Forecast Models of Rainfall in South-West Region of Nigeria
Rainfall estimates are important components of water resources applications, especially in agriculture, transport. constructing irrigation and drainage systems. This paper aims to stochastically model and forecast the rainfall trend and pattern for a city, each purposively selected in five states of the South-Western Region of Nigeria. The data collected from Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) website are captured with fractional autoregressive integrated moving average (ARFIMA) and seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average (SARIMA) models. The autocorrelation function (ACF) and partial autocorrelation function (PACF) are used for model identification, the models selected are subjected to diagnostic checks for the models adequacy. Several tests: Augmented Dickey Fuller (ADF), Ljung Box and Jarque Bera tests are used for investigating unit root, serial autocorrelation and normality of residuals, respectively; the mean square error, root mean square error and mean absolute error are employed in validating the optimal stochastic model for each city in all states, in which the model with the lowest error of forecasting of all competing models is suggested as the best. The analyses and findings suggest SARIMA(1,0,1)(1,1,0) [12], SARIMA(3,0,2)(1,0,0) [12], SARIMA(1,0,0)(1,1,0) [12], SARIMA(2,0,2)(2,1,0) [12] and SARIMA(0,0,1)(1,1,0) [12] for (Ibadan) Oyo State, (Ikorodu) Lagos State, (Osogbo) Osun State, (Abeokuta) Ogun State and (Akure) Ondo state, respectively. The seasonal ARIMA (SARIMA) model was proven to be the best optimal stochastic forecast model for forecasting rainfall in the selected cities. The SARIMA model was, therefore, recommended as a veritable technique that will assist decision makers (Government, Farmers, and Policymakers) to establish better strategies “aprior” on the management of rainfall against upcoming weather changes to ensure increase in agricultural yields for the betterment of the citizenry and general economic growth
Elliptic Gradient estimates for the heat equation on a weighted manifold with time-dependent metrics and potentials
In this paper, we get some elliptic type gradient estimates on positive solutions to the heat equation on a weighted Riemannian manifold with time dependent metrics and potentials. Thegeometry of the space in terms of curvature bounds play crucial role in determining the estimates. The gradient estimates derived are useful in proving the classical Harnack inequalities, Liouville type theorems, heat kernel bounds, e.t.c.
