Approximate Fixed Point Results for Rational-type Contraction Mappings
In the paper [Tijs, S., Torre, A. and Branzei, P.: Approximate fixed point theorems, Libertas Mathematica, 23(2003); 35 39(2003)], the authors studied some fixed point theorems by considering weakening of the conditions in the fixed point theorems of Brouwer, Kakutani and Banach which still guarantee the existence of approximate fixed points. Also, in the paper [Berinde, M.: Approximate fixed point theorems, Studia Univ. BABES-BOLYAL, MATHEMATICA, Volume L1, Number 1; pp: 11 23(2006):], the author gave some qualitative and quantitative approximate fixed point results on metric spaces by introducing two Lemmas, andusing some contactive-type operators used by Tijs etal:. The aim of this paper is to establish qualitative and quantitative approximate fixed point resultsinvolving rational-type contraction mappings in metric spaces (not necessarily complete). Our results are extensions of several others in the literature. Some examples are provided to illustrate our results
Functions and Distribution of "n" in Yorùbá Orthography
Learners of Yorùbá Language either as a child or an adult L2 may likely encounter some difficulties in classifying the sounds corresponding to the letter n in the transcription or writing system. Indeed, as it is well known, in Yorùbá, this letter which legitimately is a basic consonant phoneme or sometimes an allophone of l may sometimes correspond to a Syllabic-N, or sometimes to a nasal vowel. This paper presents three data sets on the distribution of the consonant and the functions it performs in each case, dwelling on the areas of problems for Yorùbá child learning the language or a non-native speaker of Yorùbá learning it as L2. Having established that there are three types of n: (a) n as a consonant; n as a syllabic nasal; and n as a marker of nasal feature on a nasal vowel; the paper provides a number of clues on how to identify which particular n appears wherever it is found.

INTEGRATING HEALTH EDUCATION AS A CORE SUBJECT INTO THE SECONDARY SCHOOL CURRICULUM: THE FUTURE IMPLICATIONS
The purpose of this paper was to investigate the status of health education in secondary school settings in Lagos State, Nigeria. A structured questionnaire designed for teachers and students on the importance of health education at the secondary schools was used in the study. The sample used for the study was made up of 982 respondents. Stratified random sampling technique was used. Secondary schools in Lagos State were stratified into six using Local Government Areas and a total of nine hundred and sixty two (962) questionnaires were eventually returned. A teacher was also selected from each of the schools. Descriptive statistics of frequency counts and percentages were used for demographic profiling of the respondents while Pearson-Chi-Square (X2) was used to analyze the data. The results indicated that the dangers of excluding health education as a core subject in the curriculum of secondary schools in Nigeria were identified; smoking, increase of unwanted pregnancy and abortion, spread of communicable infections, poor healthy living and practices, drug misuse and abuse, inadequate knowledge of pertinent health issues and so on. In conclusion, there have been no plans to facilitate the integration of health education as core subject in Nigerian secondary schools. Efforts to integrate this subject should urgently be sought to avert more challenges in this are
Relationship between Cognitive Style and Gender of Science and Art Cadets in Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna
This study investigated the relationship between cognitive styles and gender of science and arts cadets in Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna. Two null hypotheses guided the study. Correlational survey design was used for the study. The population was 215 part 3 science and arts cadets of the academy out of which a sample of 50 students was selected through simple random sampling technique. Hidden Figures Test (HFT) was the instruments used to identify the cognitive styles (field independent or field dependent). Independent t test was used to analyse the data. Findings revealed that there was no significant difference in the cognitive styles (field independence-field dependence) of science and art cadets in NDA Kaduna. Similarly, the independent t test revealed no significant difference between cognitive styles of male and female cadets of NDA. Based on the findings, it was recommended that deliberate effort should be made to identify students’ cognitive styles so that adequate planning can be made to take care of these individualistic differences for proper subject placement and specializatio
NEW APPROACH FOR EMPHYSEMA PATTERN DETECTION IN COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY IMAGES
Texture experimental analysis is one of the biggest challenges in the field of computer vision and pattern recognition. Fractal dimension (FD) has proven to be a useful technique in this field to analyze texture patterns. On the other hand, it could be difficult to use this approach to construct descriptors since the fractal magnitude space usually fails in representing adequately the richness of detail present in a unique feature vector. This paper therefore proposes two new algorithms for pattern analysis and detection. The first method applies different Higuchi dimension methods for identifying regions or sections with emphysema pattern problem. The second approach investigates the importance of multi-fractal spectrum for efficient identification and analysis of emphysema patterns in high resolution computed tomography (HRCT) images. The proposed algorithms have been applied to identify the locations and corresponding quantity of the emphysema patterns in HRCT images. Experimental analyses of the results were investigated using statistical techniques to establish the relationship between the ground truth patches and the HRCT image slices. Results revealed that regions with higher FD values contained the presence of emphysema due to the image tissue complexities within the regions, while detection of emphysema failed in those regions with lower or minimum FD values. This research work therefore recommended that both Higuchi’s dimension and multifractal techniques could be accurately used in detection and analysis of regions with emphysema disease
Governance and Funds Investment: The Experience in Nigeria’s Pension Industry
The major goal of an employee in a contributory pension scheme (CPS) arrangement is to attain financial security at retirement. This can be affected one way or the other by the quality of governance. Good governance would yield a desirable outcome while poor governance would likely create problems. To mitigate this problem, the National Pension Commission (PenCom) has set out guidelines on good governance for Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs). Using the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asian and the Pacific’s (UNESCAP) guidelines, the study examines five elements of governance such as transparency, accountability, inclusiveness, participation and rule of law as it relates to the investment guidelines in Nigeria. Using survey research design, data were collected from eighteen (18) PFAs and one hundred and three (103) pension contributors. The collected data were analyzed descriptively to explore stated objectives and research questions. The results of the analysis indicate that the five governance elements play a moderately high role in the investment of pension funds in Nigeria. Findings from the study suggest that the PFAs are largely transparent; accountable to pension contributors (PCs); give them a say (participation and inclusiveness) in how their fund is managed; and that PFAs are majorly in compliance with the rules established by PenCom on investment of pension funds. Implications of findings for practice and policy were pointed out and discussed. This is the first study that examines the impact of good governance on the investment performance of pension funds in Nigeria
INQUIRY MODELS-BASED INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES’ EFFICACY AND GENDER OF JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS SCIENCE STUDENTS’ PROCESS SKILLS IN BASIC SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
This study examined the effects of inquiry-based instructional strategies on student’s science process skills in junior secondary school basic science and technology in Gombe Local Government Area of Gombe State. Simple random sampling technique was employed to select 180 Junior Secondary School two students from six schools in Gombe Local Governments, Nigeria for the study. Participants were randomly assigned to conventional (cookbooks laboratory), structured and guided inquiry-based instructional activities. The treatment lasted for 7 weeks. One main instrument was developed by the researchers, validated and used; Science Process Skills Test (r = 0.85). Two hypotheses were raised to test the significant difference between cookbooks laboratory, structured and guided inquiry-based instructional activities in basic science and technology and significant difference between gender and students’ science process in basic science and technology in selected concepts. The two hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. Data were analysed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and t -test analysis. The study revealed that there was significant difference in the students’ science skills between students exposed to cookbooks laboratory, structured and guided inquiry-based instructional activities. The finding also indicated that there was significant difference in the science process skills of male and female students It was therefore recommended that basic science and technology teacher should be encouraged to inculcate science process skills in learners in involving students in inquiry-based learning activities

Effect of Team Assisted Individualisation Strategy on Senior Secondary School Students’ Motivation To Learn Mathematics
Mathematical concepts are often regarded as difficult to learn. A large percentage of students only study it because of its compulsory nature at the secondary school level. These students go through the learning process without enthusiasm and motivation to learn the subject which often results in frustration and lack of success. This study examined the effect of team assisted individualisation (TAI) on senior secondary school students’ motivation to learn mathematics using cognitive style as a moderator variable. The study was carried out using the quasi-experimental pre-test, post-test non-equivalent control group with a sample of 289 students made up of 128 males and 161 females. The instruments for data collection were the Group Embedded Figures Test and a Motivation to Learn Mathematics Questionnaire. Analysis of data showed that TAI strategy had a significant main effect on students’ motivation to learn mathematics. Field dependent students were better motivated than field-independent students. The interaction effect of treatment and cognitive style also had a significant effect on students’ motivation to learn mathematics. It was recommended that teachers should adopt TAI in teaching mathematics since it enhanced students’ motivation to learn the subject and they should attempt to identify the cognitive style of their students so that they will be able to optimise each teaching and learning session to ensure students are adequately motivated to learn mathematic
