CHALLENGES OF COOPERATIVE AND WORK- INTEGRATED EDUCATION IN THE 21ST CENTURY NIGERIA

    No full text
The 21st century is associated with advancement in technology that has affected almost every facet of human endeavour.  This has made it imperative for educational institutions to produce graduates that are globally competitive. Cooperative and work-integrated education is an out-of-school type of education designed to equip undergraduates with requisite practical skills, knowledge and abilities that will not only make them competitive but also help them to be employable. Cooperative and work-integrated education in Nigeria like in other countries is confronted with several challenges that are impeding the achievement of its objectives.  This study is an attempt to identify the challenges of cooperative and work-integrated education from the perspective of undergraduates and employers of labour.  The study employed the qualitative research method and the descriptive survey research design. The population of the study consisted of all 400-level undergraduate students who have undergone one form of a work-integrated programme or the other and employers of labour in some selected organizations. 120 undergraduates and six employers of labour were selected for the study. Data were collected using a combination of researcher-made questionnaires and Focused Group discussions. Data collected were analyzed using frequency counts and simple percentages. The study revealed among other things that the duration of most of the work-integrated programmes is inadequate, and that the programme is confronted with several challenges despite its relevance in enhancing employability. Based on the findings it was recommended that there should be adequate funding by the government

    An Introduction to Omega-Subgroup

    No full text
In the language of Omega-groupoid we introduce Omega-subgroup, where a groupoid is an algebraic structure endow with one binary operation. Omega-subgroup is defined, as a generalization of the classical subgroup. In this case it was shown that the properties of Omega-groups are inherent in their Omega-subgroups. We then introduce and define the notions: center of an Omega-group, centralizers and normalizers of an Omega-subset of an Omega-group. Furthermore we investigate and prove some of the properties of these notions as in the case of classical group theory

    No full text
This study investigated the relationship between learning strategies and the academic achievement of chemistry students. Three research questions guided the study. A correlation survey research design was used. Four hundred and twenty-one (421) Senior Secondary (II) chemistry students in twelve (12) intact chemistry classes from nine public schools in Lagos State, Nigeria participated in the study.  Process Oriented Cooperative-Inquiry Learning Strategic Instruction Method (POCILSIM) was used as the learning strategy intervention. Learning Strategies Scale (LSS), and Chemistry Achievement Test (CAT) were used for data collection. Mean, Standard deviation, and t-test were used to analyze the data collected. AMOS 26 was employed to calculate the path coefficient and goodness of fit statistics. Findings showed that the learning strategies used by the students improved after they were exposed to learning strategies intervention; high achievers students use more of the higher-order learning strategies such as metacognitive self-regulation skills than the average and the low achievers; learning strategies have a significant positive relationship with academic achievement, it, therefore, contributed significantly to improve achievement in chemistry, however, the strength of the relationship is low. Also, the metacognitive self-regulation skill strategy has the highest correlation with chemistry students’ achievement while the effort regulation strategy has the least. In addition, learning strategies have equal variances between male and female students. Based on the findings, it is recommended that the policymakers should approve the inclusion and teaching of learning strategies using POCILSIM in the national curriculum at all levels

Delay in project delivery and abandonment could be linked to poor methods and procedures of selection of contractors. This research aims to examine the impact of Contractor Prequalification Criteria (CPC) on-time performance in construction projects execution. This study was carried out in Ondo State and the population of the study comprised of registered construction professionals in the study area who were registered members of their professional bodies, drawn from contracting organisations, consulting organisations and public client organisations. A total of 189 survey sample was drawn from 350 sample frame using the Digee bird statistics sample size calculator. A stratified random sampling technique was adopted and questionnaires were used to gather data. Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS)    version 21.0 was used to analyse the data using frequency, percentage, factor analysis and regression. The frequency of use of contractors’ prequalification criteria was presented using frequency table and the results in order of hierarchy are personnel capability, technical capability, organization reputation, work experience and capability, management capability, health and safety practices and financial capability. Factor analysis was used to reduce and regroup the variable listed on the CPC, and multiple regression model to determine the relationship with execution time performance. It was found that management capability, personnel capability, organisation reputation, financial capability and work experience and capability have an impact on time performance in construction projects execution. In conclusion, not engaging contractors with these criteria is like calling for a project failure. It is therefore recommended that construction practitioners should ensure that Contractor Prequalification Criteria (CPC) should include management capability, personnel capability, organisation reputation, financial capability; and work experience and capability should be given high priority during contractor selection to ensure the contractor meet up the time frame of the project

Perception of Consumers Towards The Purchase of Life Insurance Policy in Lagos State

    No full text
In Nigeria, an insurance firm's performance is directly related to the perception of its product by its customers. This may explain why the majority of the insured population continues to pay their premiums. The study's goal is to look into consumers' attitudes toward purchasing life insurance policies in Nigeria. The study's specific goals are to measure the effects of culture, religion, and family background on life insurance policy purchases in Nigeria. This study adopted a survey research research design. The study's population is 42,832, and the sample size is 396. The questionnaire was administered to the survey participants using a survey monkey, and 390 questionnaires were collected. SPSS was used to analyze the hypothesis using regression analysis. The R value (.621) at the 5% significance level implied a strong positive correlation between culture and life insurance policy patronage, and it is statistically significant at.000, which is less than (P<0.05). The results also revealed a strong positive correlation between religion and life insurance policy patronage, as implied by the R value (.811) at the 5% significance level, and it is statistically significant at.000, which is lower than (P0.05). The analysis demonstrated that demographic factors play a significant role in different degrees in Nigerians' perceptions toward insurance services. Age, marital status, educational status, occupation, household income, and so on. It was suggested that life insurance media advertisements be more informative, as the most of the target audience is well knowledgeable about life insurance. This will improve public product knowledge, ease of access, and claim settlement process

EXAMINING THE EFFECT OF AGE DISTRIBUTION AND HEALTH INSURANCE BUSINESS ON NIGERIAN ECONOMIC GROWTH

    No full text
This study has demonstrated new evidence sustaining the idea that age distribution and health insurance affect economic growth in Nigeria. Life table that was computed based on substantial assumptions using 1990 Nigeria population data and a death rate of 18.55%, the study examines total person-years of life contributed after attaining age x as a proxy for age distribution (Tx) and the average number of years of life remaining for a person alive at the beginning of age interval x after adjustment with life expectance rate as at the year 1990 of 3% as proxy for health insurance (Hi). To achieve the objectives, research questions and hypotheses were formulated for age distribution, health insurance and economic growth. The variables Tx, Hi and GDP were subjected to normality test as normality of data is one of the standardized requirements for any least square regression. The P-values obtained from the Ordinary Least Square regression result was used to test the formulated hypotheses at 5% level of significance and the result revealed that age distribution (Tx) and health insurance (Hi) affects economic growth in Nigeria, while the Cobb-Douglas production function model shows that as the agedistribution interval of person’s in the life table increases, there is a slight fall in economicgrowth. The Cobb-Douglas model also shows an increasing return to scale which was supported by the presence of health insurance (Hi) in the model. The study recommends age distribution and health insurance as essential variables in formulating economic growth policy
