    SKILLS DEMAND BY INDUSTRIES IN THE CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY

    This study focused on skills demand by industries in the contemporary society. A research question bordering on non-technical skills demand by industries in the contemporary society guided the study. A self-developed questionnaire entitled “Skills Demand Questionnaire” (SDQ) was used to collect data from 261 respondents. The SDQ was validated by three experts and a reliability coefficient of 0.79 was obtained using Cronbach Alpha Coefficient method. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics to answer the research question raised and inferential statistics of t-test to test the null hypothesis formulated. The study revealed that all the identified non-technical skills are needed by industries in the contemporary society.     Risk and Return Analysis for Assessing Performance of Some Private Companies Listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange through an Asset Pricing Model

    In the presence of risk and uncertainty, investors still want good returns and maximal profits on their investments. For investors in stocks, to minimize loss, it is important to assess therisk and return inherent in the stocks, before investing in them. In this work, risk and return for some assets and portfolios of some companies quoted on the Ghana stock exchange (GSE)from January 2015 - February 2020 were assessed. The assets are representative of four major sectors of the economy. The systematic risk and performance of the portfolios were measured, by calculating alpha and Beta using the regression equation of the Capital asset pricing model. It was found that assets from the banking sector were more volatile, the asset of the food company was less risky, and that of the oil company seemed to mirror the market. Since private companies are investment drivers and economy boosters for growth; stability and performance analysis of some private sector companies namely CAL, GCB, MTN, GOIL, UNIL, FML,and TOTAL, was done. The price of the asset of one of the companies, were predicted for the next three months, using the model. The theoretical values were very close to the empirical values. Then, model performed well for risk and return assessment, and can be used to predict prices of assets on the GSE.&nbsp

    Multi-objective Approach to Project Selection of Indian Coal Mines: A Case Study

    Project selection problem is an unceasing problem, which every organization face. In fact, it plays a key role in prosperity of the company. In this paper, a multi-objective mathematical programming model has been formulated for the project selection of an Indian Coal Mining Company, with a proposed name as the Indian Coal Mines Limited (ICML). To solve the proposed model, fuzzy programming approach with linear membership function is used to find the best compromise solution among the different project proposals.     Tropical Polynomial of Partial Contraction Transformation Semigroup

    In this paper, we used tropical geometry on a partial transformation semigroup to create a tropical polynomial on a partial contraction mapping. Then we used the tropical polynomial to obtain a contraction mapping and plot tropical curves. Finally, we were able to find the roots of the tropical curve and determine their multiplicities

    The Computational Solution of First Order Delay Differential Equations Using Second Derivative Block Backward Differentiation Formulae

    In this paper, we implemented second derivative block backward differentiation formulae methods in solving first order delay differential equations without the application of interpolation methods in investigating the delay argument. The delay argument was evaluated using a suitable idea of sequence which we incorporated into some first order delay differential equations before its numerical evaluations. The construction of the continuous expressions of these of block methods was executed through the use of second derivative backward differentiation formulae method on the bases of linear multistep collocation approach using matrix inversion method to derive the discrete schemes. After the numerical experiments, the new proposed method was observed to be convergent, stable and less time consuming. From the numerical solutions obtained, the scheme for step number k = 4 performed better in terms of accuracy than that of the schemes for step numbers k = 3 and 2 when compared with other existing methods

    INNOVATIVE PEDAGOGIES AND ENTREPRENEURIAL EMPOWERMENT OF BUSINESS EDUCATION STUDENTS IN TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS IN LAGOS, NIGERIA

    The increasing rate of youth and graduates’ unemployment in Nigeria and the need to ascertain the extent of entrepreneurial empowerment of Business Education students for employability and self-employment opportunities necessitated this study. The study raised three research questions and tested two hypotheses. The descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study comprised all penultimate and final-year Business Education students, and all Business Education lecturers, in all public Universities and Colleges of Education in Lagos, Nigeria. Specifically, the population comprised seven hundred and ninety-four (794) penultimate and final-year Business Education students and forty-eight (48) Business Education lecturers. The sample size for this study was two hundred and sixty-six (266) Business Education students and twenty-one (21) lecturers using Taro Yamane sample calculator model. The research instrument used was a structured questionnaire. The internal consistency of the instrument was determined using Cronbach Alpha Correlation Coefficient and it yielded an average index of 0.90. The statistical tool used to analyse research questions data were mean, percentages and standard deviation while paired sampled t-tests and independent sampled t-tests were used for the research hypotheses. The results showed that Business Education students inadequately acquired entrepreneurial competencies. The instructional strategies used were not innovative enough and they contributed significantly to the inadequate acquisition of entrepreneurship skills. Constant use of innovative pedagogies by Business education lecturers and their collaboration with other stakeholders for adequate empowerment leading to self-employment and sustainable development of the Nigerian economy were the recommendation

    Socio-economic Determinants of Urban Housing Materials Types in Poor Area of Makoko, Lagos

    Housing the urban poor in developing countries has been a major concern globally. This paper examines the socio-economic determinants of urban housing types in the low-income neighbourhood of Makoko, Lagos. The specific objectives of this paper include analysis of the socio-economic characteristics of the residents in the study area, analysis of the quantity and types of housing in the study area; and their relationships. A total of 254 questionnaires were administered to the household heads in the study area using the multi- stage sampling technique. Data analysis encompassed the use of both descriptive and inferential analysis. Frequency tables were used to analyze descriptive data obtained while the inferential analysis entailed the use of Regression analysis. The findings revealed that 57.5%  of the respondents that reside in plank or bamboo houses because of their affordability, earn less than N5, 000 per month, with a household size of 6 – 7 persons (52%) and engage in informal activities. The study concludes that income level, households’ size and employment status are major determinants of residents’ housing types, especially bamboo houses in Makoko. The recommendation is to conduct research on the durability and functionality of plank and bamboo houses, alleviate the welfare of the urban poor, involve the stakeholders in any development efforts and review existing policies on housing that affect the urban poor, especially the eviction and demolition approach

    Assessing the Profitability of Insurance Sector Services in Nigeria from 2010-2019

    The fundamental goal of the insurance industry is to spread risks. The risk-absorption role of insurers contributes to financial stability in the financial sector and gives economic institutions a sense of security and safety, which in turn boosts economic growth and development. The essence of the study therefore is to assess the pattern of profitability of insurance companies in Nigeria. An ex-post facto research design was adopted in carrying out this study. Aggregate financials of forty-one (41) non-life companies for the period 2010 – 2019 was gathered from the insurance digest of the Nigeria Insurers Association database. Information gathering was analysed using the Augmented Dicker Fuller unit root test and the Ordinary Least Square Regression techniques. The data generated from the financial statements of these companies are Return on Assets (ROA), Net Claims (NC), and Expense Ratio (ER). Where: Return on Asset (ROA) = Net Income before taxes/Total Assets, Net Claims (NC) = Total claims paid in the year, Expense Ratio (ER) = Total Underwriting expenses/Earned Premium. The findings of this study indicate that ROA, or return on assets, has an indirect relationship with NC (net claims) and also indirect relationship with ER (expense ratio). According to the study, claims managers in the Nigerian insurance industry should manage their claims processes effectively in order to minimize claims against each earned premium. Future research can examine the effect of the explanatory variables on alternative profitability measures

    THE GAMMA AND BETA MATRIX FUNCTION AND OTHER APPLICATIONS

    The paper presents Gamma and Beta functions and their applications to real life problems. After relating the gamma function withEuler’s infinite products, the Hermite series and Hypergeometric series, then the computation of perimeter ( pn ) of a polygon involving gamma function by which a factor pn exceeds the perimeter of a unit circle is presented in the 2sense of Jorda and Cortise. Application to Hermite-Laguerre polynomial and multivariate calculus Hypergeometric matrix functions are presented with convergence of gamma matrix using the Ratio Test. The procedure for detecting nearness to singularity of the gamma matrix is described in terms of condition number where eigenvalues are ordered according to their magnitudes. In addition, the Numerical radius of the Gamma matrix is introduced which helps in the computation of a bound for the condition number of the matrix. In particular, we paid special attention to the analysis of the pendulum problem as a second order differential initial value problem wherein, Jacobi elliptic integrals of first and second kinds play major roles. The bounds for these elliptic integrals are discussed in details using some ideas in the existing literatures. It is established in this paper that, there exists no universally most acceptable bound for these Jacobi elliptic integrals as attested to by various authors. It is therefore suggested in this paper that these bounds may be subjected to probabilistic analysis in our future work. It is also hoped to link these bounds for the Jacobi elliptic integrals with the Weierstrass elliptic functions as well
