IMPACT OF VIRTUAL CHEMISTRY LAB SOFTWARE (VCLS) AND GENDER ON THE ACQUISITION OF PRACTICAL SKILLS IN ACID-BASE TITRATION AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS
The use of a virtual laboratory allows students to experience practical activities in the absence of adequate laboratory facilities however, the extent to which it can be used in the acquisition of practical skills needed to be determined. A quasi-experimental research design of a 2x2x2 non-randomized factorial matrix was adopted. 166 students in their intact classes comprising 62 male and 104 female students from six schools in Lagos State, Nigeria were used for the study. The schools were sampled based on the availability of functional chemistry laboratories for the control group and the availability of ICT resources for the experimental group. Three schools were selected for each group. The students in the experimental group carried out practical activities with Virtual Chemistry Laboratory Software (VCLS) while the students in the control group used the Conventional Laboratory Manual (CLM). Data were obtained with the use of the Chemistry Practical Skills Test (CPST) and the analysis was carried out with the use of descriptive statistics and ANOVA. The findings showed that chemistry students acquired practical skills with the use of VCLS just as with the use of CLM. Also, female chemistry students acquired practical skills more than their male peers. The use of virtual laboratories is therefore highly recommended in carrying out chemistry practical in secondary schools
CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTORS FOR ONLINE LEARNING ENGAGEMENT AMONG UNDERGRADUATES IN NORTH-WESTERN NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES
Students’ engagement is an essential prerequisite for successful learning. However, there appears to be very little discussion of engagement in online learning context. This study therefore investigated critical success factors namely active learning strategies (Minute paper, Small group discussions, and Short presentation) and students’ psychological attributes (Self-regulations skill, Locus of control, and Technological attitudes) for online learning engagement among undergraduates in North-western Nigerian universities. The study was piloted by two research questions, using the descriptive research design. The study population comprises the entire 192,353 undergraduates from 28 Universities, while the sample size is 2,048 participants selected through proportionate stratified random sampling technique. Multiple regression Analysis was used for data analysis. Findings showed that the three selected active learning strategies jointly and significantly contributed 3.7% to the variance, while their relative contributions as ranked by importance are small group discussions (β=.334), short presentation (β=.045), and minute paper (β=.034). Further, the three selected students’ psychological attributes made 8.8% significant joint contribution to the variance, while their relative contributions as ranked by importance are technological attitudes (β=.145), self-regulations skill (β=.056), and locus of control (β=.012). Active learning strategies and students’ psychological attributes are critical success factors for online learning engagement among undergraduates. Understanding students' academic behavior relies heavily on their level of engagement in learning. It was therefore recommended among others that all the selected explanatory variables in this study should always be taken into serious consideration in an attemt at promoting effective online learning engagement among the students
Analysis of Insurance Products and Services Effectiveness in Rural Areas (Case Study of Lagos State, Nigeria)
Providing insurance services in rural areas is beneficial to improve insurance penetration. This paper analysed the effectiveness of insurance products and services in rural Lagos State, Nigeria. It assessed the ability of the Nigerian insurance sector in providing insurance services to rural areas, and identifying how geographic conditions and lack of infrastructure amenities affect the location of insurance companies. The data used for the study was collected through interviews. The findings show that rural dwellers' lack of knowledge about the insurance and insurance industry prevents them from engaging in the industry. The findings also show that while non-settlement of insurance claims discouraged rural dwellers from purchasing insurance products and services, there is no affordability of insurance products and services mainly for rural dwellers in Nigeria. The results suggest that the government and the insurance sector should develop insurance products and services to meet the needs of rural dwellers to ensure insurance growth and deepened insurance penetration in Nigeria
UNDERGRADUATE SCIENCE EDUCATION STUDENTS’ SOCIAL MEDIA USAGE IN LAGOS STATE
The use of technology has permeated almost everything we do in the world today including teaching and learning in tertiary institutions. However, social media usage among students is increasing over time but the purpose of usage matters. This study, therefore, investigates the Undergraduate science education students’ social media usage in Lagos State. A descriptive survey design was adopted with samples drawn from science education in the University of Lagos. The population for the study consisted of all the biology education students. However, 100 students responded to the questionnaire used to gather data. The samples were selected using simple random sampling. Using mean (ẋ) as the statistical tool, the study found out that students make use of different social media sites and apps for other purposes and the times spent on the sites vary. The study concluded that students use WhatsApp, zoom, Facebook, Youtube, Snapchat, Instagram, Messenger, TikTok and Twitter as social media tools for learning at a few times and recommended that the government and Private establishments should be encouraged to provide social media to all the schools in Nigeria
DEPLOYING VIRTUAL TECHNOLOGY IN MATHEMATICS INSTRUCTION DURING COVID-19 PANDEMIC: VOICES FROM NIGERIAN MATHEMATICS TEACHERS
This study investigated 12 senior secondary school mathematics teachers in Nigeria concerning their instruction practices with virtual technology during the COVID-19 pandemic. This qualitative research work involved the use of semi-structured interview questions and was pitched towards probing into the accessibility of virtual technology at home, (2) educators’ challenges in virtual mathematics instruction, (3) educators’ capability to acclimatize during virtual mathematics instruction and (4) educators’ experiences of deploying virtual technology in mathematics instruction. This study sheds light on the influence of compulsory variations in instruction that might have inferences on the digitalization of the teacher education profession in Nigeria. The interview scrutiny apprises that the mathematics teachers conveyed efforts in virtual instruction during the COVID-19 pandemic by utilizing technology through the challenges of digitally mutable periods. Mathematics teachers were mystified with elucidating mathematics instructions in depth during the virtual teaching and significantly identifying which learners have comprehended or not. However, the study showed that learning virtually is mainly a function of Internet connectivity as many mathematics teachers abruptly find their connection disrupted while instruction in mathematics is on. This study recommended that it is essential for mathematics teachers to be abreast of the latest internet-enabled technologies for effective and efficient online instruction in mathematics
LECTURERS’ ATTITUDE AND PERCEPTION ON STUDENTS’ MOBILE PHONE CLASSROOM USAGE IN EMMANUEL ALAYANDE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION, OYO, NIGERIA
The use of technology has permeated almost everything we do in the world today including teaching and learning in colleges of education. Although mobile phone usage in the classroom is increasing over time, it is still as rejected as ever was. This study, therefore, investigates the lecturers’ attitude and perception on students’ mobile phone classroom usage in Emmanuel Alayande College of Education, Oyo, Nigeria. Descriptive survey design was adopted with samples drawn from the six schools in the college of education. The population for the study consisted of all the lecturers in the college. However, 175 lecturers responded to the questionnaire used to gather data. The samples were selected using simple random sampling. Using mean (ẋ) as the statistical tool, the study found out that the lecturers had a negative attitude towards students’ mobile phone classroom usage, however, they perceived the usefulness of mobile phones in the classroom positively. The study also revealed that lecturers perceived the way out on students’ mobile phone classroom usage positively. It was therefore recommended among others that in-service training and workshops should be organized for lecturers to improve their skill on mobile phone usage and its smooth integration into classroom teaching and learnin
KNOWLEDGE AND APPROACH TO CAREER MENTORING AMONG SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN OWERRI METROPOLIS
ABSTRACT
Background: Globally, Mentoring is known as a means of career advancement and psychosocial support to youths. It is important to have a good knowledge of mentorship as the best approach needed to select and develop a career path that would ensure development, skill acquisition and advancement.
Aim: The study was conducted to assess the knowledge, and approach to career mentoring among senior secondary school students in Owerri metropolis, Imo state, Nigeria.
Methodology: This is a descriptive survey study conducted on secondary school students who attended a technical workshop on Career, Mentorship and Development Plan; the Missing Link in Empowering the Igbo Youth by Igboekulie under their annual Asusu Igbo Amaka programme held on 23rd of November, 2019 at Owerri Girls Secondary School Owerri, Imo State, using semi structured questionnaire. The questionnaire was randomly administered to the students from various secondary schools and information on demographics, knowledge on mentorship, style of related practice and career choice were collated and analyzed using SPSS version 21.
Results: Of the 300 questionnaires administered, 292 were received of which 93 (31.8%) were from males and 199 (68.2%) from female. Most of the participants are within the age range of 13-17 (90%), followed by those 18-22 (6.5) and the least being those aged 9-12 (2.7%). Some participants aspire to become Medical Doctors (26%), Lawyers (23%), Engineers (8.9%), Priests (2.4%), Teachers (5.1%), Journalists /Media Agents (4.7%), Bankers (4.8%) and Nurses (4.6%). When asked if they were internet compliant and can easily assess internet-enabled hardware facilities or gadgets to compliment, 210 (71.9%) agreed they have while 82 (28.1%) do not. The study also investigated the availability of basic online mentoring tool. While 210/292 (71.9%) of the respondents have electronic gadgets, 28.1% do not. For those that have, 77% have mobile phone alone and 1.9% of this population with access to internet. Same as 10% that have laptops with 1% of them having access to internet. Similarly 1% have both mobile handset telephone and laptops. Overall 8.1% of the students have access to internet services. Of which 8.6% can access internet from school, 88.6% from home and 8.2% from both school and at home. A greater percentage of the students (82.9%) have someone advising them on how to choose a career in life. Majority of them 270/292 (92.5%) have heard about the word “MENTOR” and while only a few (7.5%) have not. Among those who have heard, 134 (49.6%) obtained the information from their Teachers, 48 (17.8%) from Radio, 25 (9.5%) from Church and 11 (4.1%) came across it through online search (table 1C). We also observed that 193 (66.1%) of the participants have been involved in one form of mentoring or another, of which a number below average (42.5%) were involved in a formal mentorship and 1.0% in an informal (at home) form.
Conclusion: This study shows that secondary school students in Owerri, metropolis have low level awareness of career mentorship and how to achieve their career goals. There are no formal structured mentorship program for senior secondary schools other than traditional advice from parent, teacher and religious institutions. A good number of students in Owerri have access to handset/mobile telephone at home. In this twenty first century, an era of new normal in education and training, very high number of students in Owerri do not have laptops and internet access. Having access to internet services will promote the need to establish one on one mentoring programme between students (mentees) and experienced professionals (mentors). This would be a key factor to mentor, impact and ensure proper selection of marketable professional careers, appropriate direction on how to acquire basic foundation and skills prior to tertiary education in Nigeria.
 
IMPACT OF CONTEXTUAL FACTORS ON HEARING AIDS USE SATISFACTION AMONG OUTPATIENTS IN OYO STATE TEACHING HOSPITAL, OGBOMOSO
The organ of hearing is one of the organs that aid man to function effectively in the environment. Whenever there is problem that impedes the effective functioning of ear, hearing becomes difficult and needs aid that will make it to function. In this wise, the use of hearing aids becomes inevitable for daily adjustment to sound information. However, most users of this device react differently to its use. This study investigated the impact of contextual factors on hearing aids use satisfaction among outpatients in Oyo State teaching hospital, Ogbomoso. The study employed descriptive survey research design with samples of 37 outpatients using hearing aids. The instrument used for the study is hearing aids usability inventory with reliability of 0.80 using cronbach alpha. Three research questions were answered, and hypotheses were tested using t-test and analysis of variance. The results revealed that both male and female outpatients fitted with hearing for a period derived the same level of satisfaction with the hearing aids fitted to them, degree of hearing loss did not have significant effect on hearing aids satisfaction among the participants and there was a significant difference in the hearing aid satisfaction among the participants based on the length of using hearing aids. It was recommended among others that constant use of hearing aids should be recommended and encouraged among people who have been certified to be having hearing loss not minding gender and degree of hearing loss
On Zero inflated models with applications to maternal healthcare utilization
We consider the problem of modelling count data with excess zeros and over-dispersion which are commonly encountered in various disciplines that limit the use of traditional models forcount outcomes. Our research work applies the Zero-inflated Poisson and Negative Binomial models in modelling Maternal Health Care (MHC) utilization in Nigeria, employing the Andersen’s behavioural model to examine the effect of predisposing, enabling, and need factors on MHC utilization. The performance of these models are compared to the traditional Poisson and negative binomial models. The Vuong test and AIC suggests that the Zero-inflated Negative Binomial model provided the most significant improvement over traditional models for count outcomes
BIOLOGY EDUCATION STUDENTS’ ACCEPTANCE AND PREFERENCE OF ONLINE LEARNING IN NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES
The study investigated the biology education students’ preference and acceptance of online learning in Nigerian Universities. The study adopted descriptive survey research design. The population for the study was 630, while sample for the study consisted of 412 biology education students randomly selected from 100 to 400 Levels within the Department of Science and Technology Education of University of Lagos. The instrument used for data collection was Online Learning Biology Education Students Questionnaire (OLBEQ) (r = 0.75). The data collected was analysed using descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation. Findings of the study revealed that most of the participants have previous experiences with online learning and moderate level of Information Technology (IT) skills. In addition, the findings also showed that the biology education students have positive opinion with online learning, accept it, but do not prefer it to face-to-face learning. Based on the findings of the study, it is therefore recommended that biology education students should attend workshops and seminars on online learning. They should also visit internet to aware knowledge on the best way to learn online. These may improve their preference for online learning than fac-to-fac
