INFLUENCE OF HIGH-HANDEDNESS ON SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC AND PSYCHO-SOCIAL ADJUSTMENT IN FCT ABUJA, NIGERIA
The descriptive survey research method of the correctional type was adopted for the study. The sample for the study comprised two hundred and eighty-two senior secondary school students selected in the three area councils using a multistage sampling procedure. An instrument titled "High-handedness and Psycho-social Adjustment Questionnaire" (HPAQ) was employed in gathering data for the study. Results revealed that 93.3% of senior secondary school students in FCT Abuja, Nigeria experienced a low level of high-handedness while 68.8% and 62.4%, respectively, exhibited a high level of academic and psychosocial adjustment. Also, high-handedness significantly influences the academic and psychosocial adjustment of senior secondary students in the FCT Abuja, Nigeria. The study concludes that high-handedness was a significant determinant of the academic and psychosocial adjustment of the senior secondary students. It is therefore recommended that the school administrators, in collaboration with parents and other critical stakeholders, should further work towards ensuring that the case of high-handedness is completely eradicated in the school system
Order Statistics and some of their Properties from the Exponential Pareto Distribution
Exponential Pareto (EP) distribution introduced by Al-Kadim and Boshi [1] have received further generalizations from some authors and the new distributions has been proved to exhibitflexible potentials for modeling real life datasets. However the roles and importance of statistical tools of order statistics from the EP distribution have not been considered, this study investigated the stochastic ordering properties, moments of order statistics and some distributional properties. Distributions of the extrema order statistics, the sample range Rn = X(n:n)−X(1:n) statistics and the rth order statistics was derived for the EP distribution. Explicit expressions and recurrence relations were established for the moments of order statistics, the study obtained some new results for the variability ordering between order statistics in two unequal sample sizes n and m for various combinations of even and odd samples. Distribution of the sample range statistics Rn generalizes and strengthened results for the exponential distribution existing in the literature. Numerical results were tabulated for the mean of order statistics, the variance, skewness and kurtosis for a sample of size n = 5. The results were used to establish some ordering and statistical properties of order statistics for the exponential Paretodistribution
Lie-group analysis of flow and heat transfer of a dissipating fluid past stretching/shrinking surfaces with variable viscosity and non-uniform heat flux
The effects of surface mass flux (suction/injection) and variable viscosity on free-forced convectionalong a stretching or shrinking permeable plate embedded in a saturated porous mediumare investigated through Lie-group analysis for steady two-dimensional flow in this paper. Assumptionsare made that the fluid viscosity varies as a linear function of temperature and theheat flux through the plate wall varies with power law of the distance from the edge of theplate in a thermally radiating and incompressible fluid. The governing equations are tackledby means of Lie-group scaling transformation as to obtain a system of ordinary differentialequations. Using Runge-Kutta-Gill scheme along with the shooting iteration technique, theresultant boundary-value problem is integrated numerically for different values of the physicalfluid flow parameters. Comparisons between other previously published works with thepresent study were carried out for special cases and excellent agreements were demonstrated. The effect of moderate Prandtl number for a shrinking sheet is to reduce not only the velocityand temperature of the fluid but also the wall temperature gradient. Findings reveal that thewall friction parameter (skin-friction coefficient) and local heat transfer rate (Nusselt numberor inverse wall temperature) increase with viscosity variation parameter aside the significantdependence on other emerging flow controlling parameters
Fixed Point of Interpolative Contraction on Metric Space Endowed with Graph
In this manuscript, a new concept of interpolative contraction, namely interpolative Kannan type (G)-contraction is introduced in metric space endowed with a graph, and novel conditions for which the new mapping is a Picard operator are investigated. The preeminence of this type of contraction is that it complements and subsumes a few corresponding notions in the literature. Substantial examples are constructed to validate the assumptions of our obtained results and to show their distinction from the existing ones
ECONOMIC REVATALISATION THROUGH TECHNICAL VOCATIONAL (TVET) EDUCATION AND TRAINING FOR NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Technical vocational education and training (TVET) should be strengthened as an integral school programme especially at the higher education level. Effective implementation of technical vocational education and training as part of the school curriculum should be enhanced as a means of revitalizing the economy for national development. Teachers, on the other hand, must be conversant with relevant techniques and facilities needed for transforming and empowering youths with skills to solve problems and be creative as members of society. An in-depth review of the literature reveals that teachers are faced with the problem of how to teach and prepare students with skills, knowledge, and attitudes to enable them to become productive members of society. This paper is a library-based work, and data were collected from textbooks, journal articles, and internet searches. The paper critically examined existing practices in economic revitalization through TVET for the national economy. Some of the key features mentioned were the use of concepts, inferences, and visualization, among others. Recommendations for practice change were made regarding revitalizing the economy through TVET for national development
GRADUAL DECAY OF OLD GRAMMAR SCHOOL AND BOARDINGHOUSE IN NIGERIA: LIABILITY TO THE ALUMNI AND THE ENTIRE NATION, CAUSES, EFFECTS, AND REMEDIES
The gradual decay of old grammar school and boardinghouse in our educational system in Nigeria is a great liability to the entire alumni and the whole nation. The characteristic conceptualization and institutionalization of "secondary education" in Nigeria and attempt made in this paper is to bring into focus those causes, effects and remedies to the problems, through a systematic plan of procedure. The paper discusses the epoch and historical trajectory of secondary education in Nigeria; issues and challenges faced by the school administrators in carrying out their duties in the face of harsh and unfavorable management situations of the daily growing population of students and need to cater for wastage in education. The paper then concludes by emphasising the need for federal government, state and local governments, stakeholders, philanthropists and volunteers, individuals and interested persons to rise to the aid of the once successful pyramid of grammar school/boardinghouse in Nigeria
WHISTLEBLOWING PRACTICES AND CORRUPTION PERCEPTION INDEX: THE NIGERIAN EXPERIENCE IN THE CONTEXT OF A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS
The study evaluates the veracity of whistleblowing policy in addressing incidence of corruption in Nigeria in the context of a comparative analysis. Structured questionnaire was adopted to gather primary data from the respondents cutting across experienced professional forensic accountants in the Country. Pearson’s correlation and regression analysis were used to analyse the data obtained. The findings reveal that whistleblowing practices in Nigeria are done without an enabling legal framework contrast to most countries in the world; the level of awareness of the whistleblowing policy among the stakeholders is low; reward system implementation procedure is tainted with uncertainties and bottlenecks; the mechanisms to protect the whistleblowers are inherently weak and redundant; and reporting channels for perceived workplace corrupt practices are marred with intimidations. The study concludes that corruption in Nigeria has become a growth industry and complex in nature. The Nigeria Government has consistently failed to adequately mitigate the menace of corruption in the Country. Globally, whistleblowing policy is designed as a key framework to curtail corruption and protect whistleblowers. Hence, for whistleblowing policy to achieve its desired goal in Nigeria, the study recommends that: Appropriate legal framework should be provided to guarantee credibility in Nigeria. Rewards for whistleblowers should be commensurate, timely and transparent. Wrongdoing reporting channels should be clearly specified and open. Consistent and concerted efforts should be made to create more awareness among the stakeholders, while providing ethical trainings for the employees
Education in the Throes of the Pandemic: Digital Pedagogical Responses of Visual Arts during the Covid-19 Lockdown in Nigeria
Starting with a series of conspiracy theories on social media and the attendant apprehension generated by a forced lockdown on the economy-cum-restriction of movement, COVID-19 arrived Nigeria in “grand style”. Many businesses were forced to fold up, downsize or reinvent to remain relevant within the economy. Educational institutions witnessed a complete lockdown as students were instructed to stay at home until further notice, while alternative learning modes were devised. In the visual arts, the lockdown triggered an array of responses, adapting existing digital tools in art teaching, mentorship and practice. This paper discusses some of these under three headings, namely; art business and management, art exhibitions, and technology-driven art practice. Using participant observation and unstructured interviews, the study examines the form, content, mode of delivery and impact of the pedagogy. The analysis shows significant impact as viable teaching and mentorship modules in the visual arts that should be retained in continuum. The paper adds to our knowledge, the impactful free online teaching and mentoring programs on art, organized by individuals in Nigeria during the COVID-19 lockdown
WILL INDIGENOUS SCIENCE-BASED INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES IMPROVE BIOLOGY STUDENTS’ INTEREST AND ACHIEVEMENT
The study investigated the efficacy of indigenous science –based instructional strategy on Biology students’ interest and achievement. The purpose was to find a solution to poor achievement of students in the subject in external examinations which has been linked to poor instructional methods used by teachers. Two coeducational schools were selected by Multistage sampling technique from Isoko South local government area of Delta state and randomly assigned to treatment groups. The experimental group was taught ecological concepts using the indigenous science –based strategy while the control group was taught using lecture approach. A 50-item Biology Achievement Test with reliability coefficient of .72 and 15-item Biology Interest Scale (.82) were used to collect data after 15 periods of 45minutes teaching in each class. The Mann Whitney U test (U = 898.00; P = 0.007) showed a significant difference in the interest in biology of both groups while the t-test revealed a significant difference in the achievement of students at the 0.05 alpha level. The study concluded that indigenous science –based strategy improves students’ interest and achievement in ecology concepts and recommended the introduction of culturally relevant pedagogy to draw cultural relevance for indigenous people studying sciences in non-western cultural settings
POSITIVE SOLUTIONS FOR A NONLINEAR FRACTIONAL BOUNDARY VALUE PROBLEM
In this paper, we establish the existence of positive solutions toa nonlinear fractional differential equation with integral boundary conditions. Our approach is based on the linear operator theory and the application ofKrasnosel’skii fixed-point theorem in a cone. We present two examples toillustrate the practicability of our main results
