COMPUTER ASSISTED INSTRUCTION AND MASTERY LEARNING STRATEGY AS DETERMINANTS OF SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS’ ACHIEVEMENT IN MATHEMATICS
This study investigated Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI) and Mastery Learning Strategy (MLS) as Determinants of Senior Secondary School Students’ Achievement in Mathematics. The study adopted a quasi-experimental research design of pretest posttest non-equivalent control group with a sample size of 350 male and female students. A mathematics achievement test (MAT) with reliability coefficient of (α=0.84) was used to collect data. Three research questions were answered using mean and standard deviation while the three research hypotheses were tested using analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) at 0.05level of significance. The findings were thus: There was a significant main effect of treatment (CAI, MLS, TM) on students’ achievements in mathematics. There was a significant main influence of gender on students’ achievement in mathematics. There was no significant interaction effect of treatment and gender on students’ achievement in mathematics. Based on the result of the study, it was recommended that CAI and MLS should be applied in teaching mathematics in secondary schools to contribute significantly to the achievement of students
SCALE DEVELOPMENT AND VALIDATION OF LEARNERS’SATISFACTION IN OPEN AND DISTANCE LEARNING (ODL) IN THE UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS
The need for Nigeria to start to embrace the social inclusion offered by Open and Distance Learning (ODL) in the country’s ailing tertiary educational sector cannot be overemphasized. However, to properly position ODL as a valid alternative, there is need to assess the quality of the current offerings in the country. Measuring satisfaction of the users is a veritable assessment of quality and as such forms the purpose of this study whose objectives were to Design a scale for Learners’ satisfaction in ODL in Nigeria, to assess the reliability of the scale for Learners’ satisfaction in ODL in Nigeria and to determine the validity of the scale for Learners’ satisfaction in ODL in Nigeria. Using a multistage scale development method, three scales to measure the three identified stages of ODL in Nigeria were developed and tested for validity and reliability using Factor Loadings and Cronbach’s Alpha respectively. Results showed that the scales were reliable, and the items all had factor loadings within acceptable limits as found in literature. It was thus, recommended that ODL institutions in the country should consider using the scale as a basis for their own self-examination to improve quality of learner experience
An analysis of rain-fed and irrigation in the growth and yield of cucumber (cucumis sativus l.)
Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) requires relatively more water for growth and yield than other crops, yet its cultivation in most of the tropical region including Nigeria is characterised by threat to optimum water availability (rainfall). Thus, artificial water supply is accepted as an alternative water source to make cucumber available during the dry season farming. With the changing climate and its’ impact on water supply, there is need for more information and data to understand the synergy between cucumber production and water for proper planning. This paper therefore aimed at determining the response of cucumber production to rain-fed and irrigation focusing on the growth and yield parameters. Two experiments were carried out one on irrigated control cucumber cultivation and the second on open cultivation of cucumber which depended on rainfall for seven weeks. The same treatments were given to both experiments except their water need. Data on plant height (cm), weight of harvested cucumber were collected and determined. Rainfall data(mm) between July and September was sourced from the University of Lagos Meteorological Station for a comparative analysis. The result depicted rainfed cucumber plants recorded a higher mean value of the number of harvested fruits (3.33) and weight of harvested fruits (1.33kg) than irrigation cucumber plants 1.33 and 0.5 kg respectively. Thus, the rainfed technique is better for high cucumber yield. The study suggested that cucumber cultivated with rain water perform better with significant differences in the height, growth and yield performances that with borehole irrigated water
Pattern of food security in Ondo state Nigeria
Food insecurity is one of the major challenges faced by developing nations of the world and attempts to solve the problem has been abortive. This study examined the incident of food security in Ondo State. This was done through a designed Food Security Index (FSI) questionnaire and attempted the interpretation using Elliot (2014) food security score. The findings showed that food security vary from one senatorial district to the other (Northern 57.6%, Southern 48.8% and central 47.0%); the overall result for the state showed that Ondo State has FSI of 51.1%, showing the state to be partially secured compared to global standard of 42%. It was discovered that there has been no productive measure taking by the government and individuals to eradicate food insecurity menace in the study area. The study recommends that government at all levels should encourage food crop farmers with proactive measures such as grants and interest free loan so as to improve food production in the state
Trigonometrically-Fitted Simpson’s Method for Solving Volterra Integro-Differential Equations
In this study, a third derivative trigonometrically fitted Simpson’s method is developed andapplied to approximate the solution of Volterra Integro-Differential Equations (VIDEs) via the multistep collocation method. The VIDEs are first transformed to IVPs by the Leibnitz rule of differentiating integral. A continuous third derivative trigonometrically fitted method is constructed with the trigonometric basis function from which both the main and the complementary discrete formulas are generated. The two discrete formulas are then applied as simultaneous integrators in a block by block form to solve the VIDEs. Whereas numerical properties of the proposed method are investigated, its accuracy is demonstrated through some standard examples
DWINDLING ENROLMENT OF PUBLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL PUPILS: IMPLICATIONS FOR FUNCTIONAL EDUCATION IN THE NORTH CENTRAL NIGERIA
The study is a descriptive survey which sought to ascertain the dwindling enrolment rate at primary level of education in Nigeria. This study was conducted in Benue and Nasarawa States. The sample comprised 1554 primary school teachers in which were drawn by simple random sampling techniques. Three research questions and two hypotheses guided the study. The instrument for data collection was 16 item questionnaires tagged ‘Socio-economic variables question (SEVQ) and school location factors questionnaires (SLFQ) developed by the researchers. The instrument was validated and an internal consistency of 0.89 and 0.81 respectively was calculated using Cronbach Alpha techniques. The data collected was analyzed using means and percentages for research questions and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) for hypotheses at p<0.05. The finding revealed that children from a low stratified home with a low income were not allowed to have enrolment to primary school. Based on the findings, recommendations were that government should provide financial assistance or full scholarship to children at all levels and evolve strategic planning method before new primary schools are established
Modelling the Effects of Heat and Mass Transfer on Steady Two-Dimensional Hydromagnetic Flow Over an Impermeable Surface
The role of heat and mass transfer in moving fluid is important in view of several physical problems such as those dealing with chemical reactions and those encountered with dissociating fluids. A lot of interest has been built in the study of the flow of heat and mass transfer. The aim of present investigation was to study the effects of heat and mass transfer on steady hydromagnetic boundary layer flow over an impermeable horizontal surface with ohmic and viscous heat dissipation. The model formulated taking into consideration the viscous energy dissipation. The surface is assumed to be impermeable. The governing equations formulated based on the conservation of momentum, species and energy were considered in steady state form and solved analytically using direct integration. The results obtained are presented graphically and discussed. The results revealed the effects of operating parameters on the flow and heat transfer over an impermeable surface. Our findings showed that there is a continuous increase in fluid velocity and a decrease in medium temperature along the distance while fluid velocity decreases and medium temperature increases as values of magnetic parameter and Reynolds number increases. These results might be used for interpretation or experiments planning of the more complex flow and heat transfer processes. 
PSYCHO- PERSONAL CONSTRUCTS AS PREDICTORS OF HEARING AIDS SATISFACTION AMONG OUTPATIENTS OF LADOKE AKINTOLA UNIVERSITY TEACHING HOSPITAL, OGBOMOSO, OYO STATE
The organ of hearing is vital to man as about 70 percent of the information needed for daily life is aided by normal functioning of human ears. Whenever there is a problem that impedes the effective functioning of the ear, hearing becomes difficult and needs an aid that will make it function. The fitting and the use of hearing aids become necessary to aid the audibility of any person that suffers audibility loss. However, most users of this device react differently to its use. This study investigated the influence of psycho-personal constructs on hearing aids satisfaction among outpatients of Ladoke Akintola University Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso. The study employed descriptive survey research design with samples of 37 outpatients using hearing aids. The instrument used for the study is hearing aids usability inventory with reliability of 0.80 using cronbach alpha. Three research questions were answered. Data collected was analysed using descriptive statistics, Pearson Product Moment Correlation and Multiple regression analysis. The results revealed that their significant relationship between the independent variables (hearing aids experience, hearing self-efficacy, hearing ability on hearing aids and confidence using HAs) and hearing satisfaction, the independent variables jointly predict hearing satisfaction and hearing aids experience was found to have the most significant contribution to hearing aids satisfaction among the participants. Geographical analysis of airport choice factors among domestic air travelers in Nigeria
An effective airline operation is largely a function of the quality of service provided by the host airports. There are numerous studies outlining different factors on the determinants of airline choice or preference, but there is very limited information in this regard on airport’s choice among domestic air travelers in Nigeria. The rationale for this study is two-fold. Firstly, the study attempts to establish what influences the choice of airport among domestic air travelers. The second rationale is to significantly contribute to the enrichment of the existing literature on airport choice among air travelers. This paper, therefore attempts to identify the determining factors for choice of airport, particularly where airport is found in towns that are separated by few distance. Primary data was adopted for this study using a structured questionnaire focusing on the determinant factors of airport’s choice. A total of 493 domestic air travelers were sampled using the systematic random sampling method. The result of the hypothesis revealed that route availability and airfare were significant factors that influenced the choice of airports among passengers. Furthermore, the stepwise multiple regression analysis results showed that the availability of aircraft for passenger destinations was a strong influence at 91.1% (F = 28875.881, p<0.05). The study, however, identified the factor that determines choice of airport. Also, apart from enriching the literature, this finding is expected to assist policy makers to formulate policies that could further entrench equity in the provision of air service to the people in the nearest future
Transportation and agro-food distribution in sub-saharan africa
Transportation plays an important role in the movement and distribution of goods and services. It is an essential ingredient of development, since there is always a need to collect, assemble, move, transfer and distribute goods and services from spatially differentiated origins and destinations. Transportation creates market for agricultural produce, facilitates interaction among geographical and economic regions and opens up new areas to economic focus. Transport is a key to efficient and effective distribution of agricultural products at a cost and time convenient for both the producers and the consumers and it is regarded as a crucial factor in improving agricultural productivity. Agricultural production is very important to the economy of the world as a whole and Sub-Saharan Africa in particular. However, the rural transport is poor resulting in the high cost of transportation, inefficient distribution and delay in reaching the final markets. In adequate transport provision leads to waste of about 25% of total agricultural foodstuff produced. Hence, this paper evaluates transportation and agro-food distribution in Sub-Saharan Africa, examines rural transportation system and assesses the rural transport gaps. The conventional approach towards agro-food distribution in Sub-Saharan Africa focuses mostly on motorized transport. This approach is too narrow because it does not reflect the transport requirements and purchasing power of small-scale farmers. A broader approach that includes not only roads, but also paths and tracks; not only trucks but also intermediate means of transport such as donkeys, bicycles and animal carts in improving agro-food distribution in Sub-Saharan Africa is recommended
