EFFECTS OF DISABILITY ON EDUCATION (A CASE OF PERSONS WITH IMPAIRMENT IN UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS)
Disability has been observed to have effect on the general live of persons especially those 8th admitted in schools. But this research dwells on effect it has on the academic performance of students. In this 21st Century, the rate of disability has increased 20% over the years, even those that were given birth to without disability, developed one as they grow up; and this has great effect on their academic performance.
 
COMPLEMENTARY RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DOMESTIC CREDIT TO THE PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SECTORS IN NIGERIA
Domestic credit is of paramount importance for sustainable growth in any economy with credit options contributing to accelerating economic growth. This investigation aims to analyze the complementary affiliation between credit to both the public and private sectors in Nigeria, at the domestic level, from the year 1981 to the year 2020. An Auto-regressive Distributed Lag model was applied to elucidate the correlation between the variables in the short and long-term periods. From the findings, the relationship between credit to the public and private sectors is not complementary. Therefore, it is the recommendation of the study that the adoption of a complementary relationship between public and private sector credits at the domestic level of domestic lending and sector-specific credit policies. Furthermore, in order to ensure proper credit monitoring, effective risk management practices should be intensified, with more emphasis on the public sector, so that domestic credit will have an improved impact on the growth of the economy
Managing risks for operational efficiency of smallholder farmers: a pathway for resilience and sustainable agro-food system in Nigeria
The reality that risk is present in every operation involving humans across the world necessitates a rethink on how smallholder farmers can be strengthened for resiliency and sustainability of agro-food system in Nigeria without appropriate risk management. No doubt, farming is risky; smallholder farmers live with risk and make decisions affecting their operations daily. As they may find it difficult to access formal indemnity-based risk management options, there is need to explore alternatives strategies for managing these risks. This study is thus conducted to investigate the risks in smallholder farming and appropriate management strategies for use by smallholder farmers in Nigeria. A qualitative research approach was adopted using systematic literature review (SLR) technique. We followed Cervantes-Godoy, Kimura and Antón’s smallholder risk management model. Findings revealed that risks affecting smallholder farmers globally do not differ as they come basically from non-agricultural events (e.g., health problem); shocks in production, market, institutional, personal, financial and legal operations none of which are exclusive to any particular country, Nigeria inclusive. A number of risk management (Ex ante) and risk coping (Ex post) instruments and strategies considered to be effective and efficient were found to include among others, crop and plot diversification, inter-cropping practices, family-intra-community charity, liquid asset (crop) and buffer stock, avoidance, social network, diversification (both on-and off-the-farm), agricultural credit, contract farming, and most interesting index-insurance services. We have proposed a risk management matrix for smallholder farmers to use in selecting the most appropriate strategy for handling risk in their business
Exponentiated Weibull Inverse Rayleigh Distribution
This work focuses on the study of a new four-parameter Exponentiated Weibull Inverse Rayleigh Distribution (EWIR) using Exponentiated Weibull-G family of distribution as the generator. Statistical properties of the distribution (like, Moment, Quantile, Skewness & Kurtosis, Moment, Mgf) were derived along with its asymptotic behaviour. The parameters of the new distribution were estimated using Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MLE) methods. The performance of the EWIR distribution was compared with other related distribution from the literature using the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC), Bayesian information criterion (BIC), and Hannan-Quinn information criterion (HQIC) methods comparison. A simulation study was conducted to evaluate the MLE estimates, bias, and standard error for various parameter combinations at different sample sizes. Application of the distribution was made using a real dataset, the data set contains carbon fiber strength (20mm). The MLEs, Standard Errors (SEs), and –log-likelihood for the new distribution and five other related distributions were fitted to the data set. Goodness-of-fit measures based on AIC, BIC, Kolmogorov-Smirnov test (K-S) values and their corresponding ranks (in parentheses) for the dataset was also presented. Hence, the new EWIR model provided the best fit among the other models for the data set, since it has the lowest values of AIC, BIC, and K-S Values
On the stability, boundedness and asymptotic behaviour of solutions of differential equations of third-order
In this paper, we construct a complete Lyapunov function which serves as a tool in providing sufficient conditions that ensure uniform asymptotic stability of the zero solution when p(t, x, y, z) ≡ 0; uniform ultimate boundedness and asymptotic behaviour of all solutions when p(t, x, y, z) ̸= 0 of a certain third order non-linear ordinary differential equation. The results in this paper are new and in some ways generalize and improve on some existing results in literature. Finally, we provide an example to justify the correctness of the theorems
CONTRIBUTION OF SMALL AND MEDIUM SCALE ENTERPRISES TO ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF NIGERIA
Nigeria’s economic challenges have been attributed to excessive reliance on crude oil and as a result of the government's concentration of large-scale industries at the expense of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs). In this study, we investigate the effect of electricity power supply on the productivity of SMEs as well as to which these Small and Medium scale Enterprises SMEs contribute to the economic development of Nigeria. Secondary data were extracted from CBN Statistical Bulletins covering the period between 1997 and 2020. Multiple Econometric Method was used to analyse the data, and the results were tested at a 0.05 significance level. The findings from the analyses of the study showed that SMEs’ productivity (SMEP), employment generation by SMEs (EG), electricity power supply and credit available to SMEs have significant positive effects on the economic development of Nigeria. Based on the findings, it was recommended that the government should ensure that SMEs’ productivity is improved by ensuring adequate credit availability to SMEs at reasonable interest rates, adopting macroeconomic policies that will reduce the level of inflation rate, ensuring regular and affordable electricity power to SMEs by allowing state independent power generation and supply. We believe that improving the SME's operational base will provide the needed catalyst for Nigeria's economic growth and development
Big Brother Naija Lockdown: The Nigerian Youth Populace and the Reflection of the Social Self
When one reflects on the day-to-day livelihood of the average Nigerian youth, it begs the question of whether Nigeria has in turn been “faithful and loyal” to its citizens when the latter have pledged to do so for the development of the acclaimed giant of Africa. Citizens, in the context of this paper, solely refer to the Nigerian youth who constitute half of the total population; with an age range that runs between 15 and 34 years. The country, though not oblivious of the agile youth as its bedrock for present and perpetual sustenance, has been unable to provide for the immediate and consequently the imminent future needs of its youth; leaving the gargantuan part of the class underemployed or unemployed, as a result of glaring, unfavorable socio-economic decisions that transcend from jaundiced political activities. Hence, the emergence of the coronavirus in December 2019 dealt a double, intense blow to the Nigerian youth who, prior to the economic wrenching pandemic, could hardly sustain himself on his paltry earnings in an inauspicious social environment. For the Nigerian youth, therefore, the Lockdown presents the opportunity for a more intense reflection of the self and social identity, such that the well-acclaimed Big Brother Naija, Season Five Lockdown Edition, sets off a social identity paradigm for the young populace
Art and Artist in Pandemic: Four Notable COVID-19 Precipitated Virtual Art Exhibitions in Nigeria
COVID-19, the code name of the disease caused by a Coronavirus, was first announced in December 2019 by China and declared a world pandemic in 2020. Among several measures to curb and eradicate the disease was the enforcement of a lockdown. Lockdown impacted the socio-cultural and economic lives of people worldwide. The internet became the only space where everyone connected. Many professionals and entrepreneurs responded by finding alternative avenues to enable the sustainability and survival of their professions. Among these that were grossly affected are artists worldwide, who responded to the demands of the times in different ways. One aspect of art practice that was affected was gallery-based art exhibitions which led to the emergence of increase in virtual art exhibitions. This paper documents and reviews four selected outstanding virtual art exhibitions from the numerous that took place and were precipitated by COVID-19 lockdown. From observation of fifteen notable exhibitions, four exhibitions were purposively selected for study for this paper. The parameters for the selection of the four were: the types of technologies used for the exhibitions such as CUDA-X, Multi-Instance GPU (MIG) and platforms such as EGX Platform, Virtual GPU, Jetson, GeForce, RTX and NVIDIA Drive; the variety and geographical spread of the locations of both the participating artists and viewership; the media used for the execution of the artworks and areas of specialization of the artworks (painting, sculpture, photography, multi-media and digital); the professional status of the organisers and curators and artists; only group not solo exhibitions and only exhibitions originating from Nigeria. Apart from observation, the methodology for the investigation carried out for this study included interviews with the curators and some of the exhibiting artists and the critical examination of the artistic components, features, technologies and platforms. The effects of these virtual exhibitions and their possible impact on contemporary art in Nigeria were assessed through the participants and viewers data collected from the organisers and literature search online. The study revealed that the launch of virtual art exhibitions is a gain for art and artists worldwide, Nigeria inclusive. Such achievements are in artistic ethics, art education, art practice, patronage, art technology and information. The data collected on viewership showed that virtual art exhibitions will enlarge the borders of Nigerian contemporary art and artists internationally by their recognition, increase in patronage and promotion. The exhibitions also opened extensive explorations into advanced technologies that are highly beneficial to the development of Nigerian contemporary art. The direction of the art vis-a-vis forms, styles, genres, media and movements is one aspect to watch out for in the aftermath of COVID-19
IMPACT OF TEACHERS’ CAPACITY BUILDING ON STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN PUBLIC SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN OGUN STATE
Poor academic performance of students in secondary school has been attributed to so many factors among which is lack of capacity on the part of teachers. This study investigated the relationship between capacity building for teachers and students’ academic performance in Senior Public Secondary Schools in Ogun state. Four research questions were raised to guide the study and three null hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The study adopted descriptive and a correlational research design. The sample for the study consisted of 250 teachers purposively drawn from a population of 2500 Public Senior Secondary School teachers who have attended the capacity building programme. Teachers’ Capacity Building Questionnaire (TCBQ) and test instruments were the two research instruments used to elicit information from the respondents. The major findings of the study showed a strong positive correlation between teachers’ capacity building on curriculum development and students’ academic performance; teachers’ capacity building on information and communication technology (ICT) and students’ academic performance and teachers’ capacity building in students’ assessment has a strong positive relationship with the students’ academic performance. The study concluded that teachers’ capacity building in curriculum development, information and communication technology and teachers’ capacity building on students’ assessment will enhance teachers’ competencies in teaching which will in turn improve students’ achievement in learning in public secondary schools in Ogun state. The paper recommended that there should be capacity building for teachers on curriculum development, students’ assessments module and on use of information and communication technology (ICT)
Quadratic Mixed Convection Tangent Hyperbolic Stratified Fluid Flow Past a Vertical Elongated Sheet with Nonlinear Thermal Radiation: Spectral Local Linearization Method
In the present study, the flow of tangent hyperbolic fluid over a vertically elongated sheet with double stratification and nonlinear thermal radiation effects is investigated. The model is developed with nonlinear mixed convection of second-order via Boussinesq approximation, a transverse magnetic field of uniform strength, viscous dissipation effects and temperature-dependent thermal conductivity. The model equations are transformed from nonlinear partial differential equations into ordinary differential equations through appropriate similarity transformation quantities while the translated equations are solved with an iterative technique known as the Spectral Local Linearization Method (SLLM). A comparison of the obtained results in the current study with related existing studies in the literature shows perfect agreement under some limiting constraints. The physical parameters' effects on the dimensionless velocity, temperature, skin friction coefficient and Nusselt number are clearly illustrated by various graphs. In the analysis, it is found that an increase in the fluid material parameter decelerates the fluid motion while the velocity appreciates with the mixed convection term. Similarly, the surface heat transfer improves by raising the value of the temperature ratio parameter (nonlinear thermal radiation) whereas there is a reduction in the heat transfer in the presence of the thermal stratification parameter
