Numerical Solution of Systems of Integro Differential Equations Using Polynomial Collocation Method
This paper deals with the development of a new numerical scheme to solve systems of linear integro differential equation under mixed conditions. The new method adopted the use of standard collocation points to transform the state equations into linear algebraic equations. These equations are then solved using MATLAB programming through the matrix inversion technique to obtain the unknowns. The convergence of the method is established and numerical examples are solved and compared with existing results to confirm the efficiency of the new method
CAPTURING EXCESS ZEROS IN MODELING AUTO-INSURANCE CLAIMS IN AN INDIGENOUS INSURANCE FIRM USING ZERO INFLATED MODELS AND HURDLE MODELS
Count data occur naturally in a number of disciplines ranging from economics and social sciences to finance as well as medical sciences. Most count data are plagued with over-dispersion and excess zeros making it difficult to model them with vanilla linear models. Different models have been proposed to capture this peculiarity in count data viz.: A number of classical regression models such as the generalized Poisson and negative binomial have been used to model dispersed count data. Hurdle and zero-inflated models are also said to be able to capture over-dispersion and excess zeros in count data.
In this paper, we compare the performance of Poisson and Negative Binomial hurdle models, zero-inflated Poisson and Negative Binomial models, classical Poisson and Negative Binomial regression models as well as the zero-inflated compound Poisson generalized linear models to modelling frequency of auto insurance claims in a typical emerging market.
The model parameters are estimated using the method of maximum likelihood. The models performances are compared based based on some model selection criteria, including: Akaike and Bayesian information Criteria (AIC and BIC), and Gini index. The zero-inflated compound Poisson generalized linear models performed better than the other models considered
Coronavirus: One word, Many Pronunciations among Nigerians
Coronavirus (Covid-19) is a disease that affects the respiratory tract. Since the emergence of this disease in Wuhan province of China towards the end of 2019, it has spread to all parts of the world including a multilingual nation, Nigeria with over 500 languages. Articulation of foreign medical terms is not always easy among the basilect English speakers in Nigeria. Consequently, the interactions and discussions of Coronavirus have generated various pronunciations that this study is set to examine. A total of 50 short real-life videos and audio clips made up of 30 adult males, 17 adult females, 2 teenagers (1 male and 1 female) and 1 pupil were gathered online. The data were analyzed using the socio-phonetics method. Results show that the word Coronavirus has eighteen pronunciation types among Nigerians. Strategies employed in trying to adapt to the pronunciation of Coronavirus includes sound substitution, sound deletion, sound insertion, and other forms of neologism. This study has established various phonetic interventions in the COVID-19 discourse in Nigeria. The study concludes by advocating for official adaptation of medical terms such ‘Coronavirus’ and the ‘likes’ into local languages
There’s a TINGLING IN MY THROAT: IS that you CORONA?
It's the tenth day of the lockdown over the coronavirus pandemic. It‟s been a dreadful ten days, and I‟ve just exhausted my stock of groceries. The government told us to prepare for a fourteen-day lockdown in the first instance. I prepared. I purchased enough food stuff and toiletries to last fourteen days. There are at least four more days to endure the "stay at home‟ order. If we are lucky. The Lagos state government is threatening to extend the lockdown “if Lagosians don‟t behave themselves.” I‟m an obedient Lagosian. I obey the rules. I endure the anxiety and paralysing fear of getting infected. There are rumours that the virus could be airborne. So I shut my windows and cascade in sweat, even when there‟s no electricity to power the fan or air conditioner that have become basic necessities. These measures, as tough as they are fail to take away the fear in me. Each time I feel a tingling in my throat, I ask: Corona, is that you? I jump around panicking, and pace about my room until I collapse into bed in exhaustion. I have been sufficiently educated to know that the virus comes stealthily with tingling. Then, it makes your throat itch, and consolidates its invasion by making you sneeze and cough before it takes total possession of your lungs. I self-regulate, stifling any sneezes and coughs attempt to betray my discipline. Traitors. Although I‟m far away from the instruments for testing, each time I feel a tingling in my throat, I tell myself repeatedly that Corona will not invade my lungs
CONSCIENTIZATION: A CRITICAL ELEMENT FOR FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION ABANDONMENT AMONG WOMEN IN RURAL COMMUNITIES IN NIGERIA
Despite its cultural importance, FGM has drawn considerable criticism because of its potential for both short- and long-term medical complications, as well as harm to reproductive health and infringement on women’s rights. FGM, according to WHO, (2023) involves the numbing, burning, piercing, partial or total removal of the female external genitalia provokes medical, emotional, social, legal and economic repercussions at all levels of society; and many survivours of FGM often have to endure the negative effects of the practice to their sexual, reproductive health and overall wellbeing. Over the years, world leaders, international and national organisations and Non-Governmental Organisations have put a lot of effort and resources into ending FGM which is internationally recognised as a violation of human rights, and an extreme form of violence against girls and women.  
USABILITY ASSESSMENT FOR DEVELOPMENT OF AUGMENTED REALITY FOR GEOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION SYSTEM
The development of Augmented Reality (AR) for learning Geographical Information System (GIS) involves several challenges pertaining usability. Thus, this study conducted usability assessment during development of AR package for learning GIS (ArGIS) for undergraduate students in Gombe State, Nigeria. The study was based on design and development using pre-test and post-test. The population for the study comprised 194 undergraduate students from two universities in the state. The participants were purposively sampled using two intact classes of 84 in experimental group and 110 in control group. A sample of 15 experts from Instructional Design, GIS and Computer Science were involved in the study. A 3rd version Post-Study System Usability Questionnaire (PSSUQ) widely used in Human Computer Interaction (HCI) was adopted for the study. The PSSUQ was a standardized tool with 0.90, 0.91 and 0.83 reliability coefficients for system usefulness, information and interface quality respectively. The PSSUQ was administered both during and after development of the package. The findings revealed that the ArGIS was rated 94.875% and 97.35% usable by experts and students respectively. The study concluded that usability assessment of mobile package depends on the users, their characteristics and skills, the task they want to perform as well as the context of use. It was therefore recommended that usability assessment should be carried out throughout AR package development process for satisfying the desired learning needs in GIS and remote sensing task
ASSESSMENT OF SKILLS ACQUIRED BY BUSINESS EDUCATION STUDENTS FOR EFFECTIVE EXPLORATION OF DIGITAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP OPPORTUNITIES AMONG UNIVERSITIES IN LAGOS STATE
The study examines assessment of skills acquired by business education students for effective exploration of digital entrepreneurship opportunities among universities in Lagos State. Though the move to a digital entrepreneurship economy has started in the post-industrial era, its growth was sluggish globally, however, the sudden occurrence of Covid-19 has been recorded to have hastened the process and provided numerous chances for digital innovation and opportunities. Meanwhile, business education is a program based on a vision and a set of competencies designed to prepare students to become knowledgeable, ethical business decision-makers and entrepreneurs. In carrying out the study, the descriptive research design was adopted. The study population was 212 final-year business education students in the University of Lagos and Lagos State University, out of which only 132 students were sampled for the study. An instrument titled the “Digital Entrepreneurial Skills of Business Education Students Questionnaire (DESBESQ)” was used to collect data needed for the study. Inferential statistics of independence sample t-test were used to test the hypotheses formulated at a 0.05 level of significance. The findings showed that not all variable the table shows a p-value (0.326), which is higher compared to the significant value of 0.05, for 130 degrees of freedom. The finding reveals that there is no significant difference in the level of skills acquired by business education students for the effective exploration of e-commerce opportunities among Universities in Lagos State. It was concluded that there is a need to develop their skills in digital marketing and e-content writing and there is a need for universities to provide business education students with the necessary training and education to develop their skills in these areas
MENTORSHIP AND INTERNSHIP AS CORRELATE OF BUSINESS START-UPS AMONG YOUNG PEOPLE IN LAGOS STATE, NIGERIA
The rise of business startups in Nigeria have been threatened by the inability to remain viable and stand the test of time in the competitive market. This has resulted in many startups folding up nearly daily. The study therefore aims to examine mentorship and internship as correlate of business startups among young people in Lagos state, Nigeria. Two research questions were answered. Descriptive survey research design was employed for this study. The population of the study comprised graduates of a training institute with specific focus on potential entrepreneurs, and the coordinators of Lagos State Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LSCCI), and Bank of Industry (BOI) respectively who oversee training and development units. To gather information from characteristics that can give relevant and useful responses to the research questions, purposive sampling technique was deployed to select 10 respondents each from LSCCI and BOI, and a coordinator each from these two government agencies. In all, 22 respondents were selected for this study comprising of 20 trainees and two coordinators. Interview was used for gathering of qualitative data to establish how mentorship and internship serve as correlate for business startups among young people. The analysis of the qualitative data was done using thematic analysis. Findings from the study reveal that mentorship has improved the orientation and skills of young people towards start-ups, and that internship has relationship with the start-ups among young persons in Lagos. The study concluded that mentorship and internship have relationship with start-ups among young people in Lagos, but it is obvious that mentorship has more influences. The study therefore recommended among others that, mentorship and internship programmes be strongly promoted in the higher institutions of learning
Technological adoption in logistics management: Review of literature and agenda setting
In this research, the existing literature on the major antecedents influencing and impeding the adoption of technology in managing logistics was examined. The main antecedents examined include the sorts of technological applications used, the degree of application integration, cost reduction and service level improvement, process management and monitoring, safety and security enhancements, and company features. There was also a discussion of the internal and external obstacles to technology adoption. To improve technology adoption in logistics management, the study recommends raising investment in technology, effectively integrating both new and old technologies, establishing industry-based standards, and boosting employee participation.
 
TEACHERS' SELF-EFFICACY AND USE OF DIGITAL TOOLS IN MATHEMATICS INSTRUCTION IN SELECTED SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN ABUJA
Digital tools have become integral devices for teaching and learning in today's education system. The use of digital devices in the classroom has been linked to enhanced student engagement and improved learning outcomes. However, the successful integration of digital devices into the educational process relies heavily on the teachers' self-efficacy. This study, therefore, investigates the teachers' level of self-efficacy and utilization of digital tools in mathematics instruction. The study adopted the descriptive survey research design. The design exploited mostly quantitative approach. Population of the study consisted of one hundred and sixteen (116) teachers from five secondary schools in Bwari Area Council, FCT- Abuja. The Mathematics Achievement Test (MAT) was used to gather data and was verified by professionals. The reliability testing was carried out using Cronbach Alpha to obtain a reliability index of 0.78. Statistics such as mean, standard deviation, and t-test were used to examine the collected data. The data were analyzed using Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient statistics. The findings reveal a significant positive correlation between teachers' self-efficacy scores and their actual utilization of digital tools in mathematics instruction. Teachers who demonstrated higher levels of self-efficacy in using digital tools were more likely to incorporate them into their teaching practices actively. These results highlight the importance of nurturing teachers' self-efficacy beliefs in technology integration. The study emphasizes the need to provide targeted professional development programs and resources to enhance teachers' technological skills and confidence. Empowering educators and fostering their self-efficacy in digital tool utilization can lead to more effective and innovative mathematics instruction. Future research and educational initiatives should continue to explore strategies to enhance teachers' self-efficacy beliefs and investigate the impact of technology integration in mathematics education. The findings of this study contribute to our understanding of the role of self-efficacy in teachers' utilization of digital tools and provide valuable insights for educational institutions and policymakers seeking to promote effective technology integration in mathematics instruction
