    UNTANGLING COLONIALISM: EDUCATION, RESISTANCE, AND TRANSFORMATION

    The article investigates the enduring impact of colonialism on global education systems, highlighting how colonial powers historically imposed Western educational ideals that marginalised indigenous knowledge and cultural practices. This colonial legacy persists through Western-centric curricula and assessment standards, often overlooking the diverse realities of formerly colonized societies. To address these historical inequities, comprehensive decolonisation efforts are necessary, including revising curricula to integrate diverse perspectives and knowledge systems. This process involves not only adding diverse content but also fundamentally rethinking pedagogical approaches to foster critical thinking and engagement with multiple worldviews. Resistance to colonial educational legacies is multifaceted, involving grassroots movements, academic scholarship, and policy advocacy aimed at empowering marginalised communities. Incorporating indigenous knowledge and epistemologies into educational systems is crucial, as these offer alternative ways of understanding the world. Institutional transformation is also necessary, requiring a rethinking of structures, policies, and practices to promote equity and inclusion. A global perspective highlights the importance of cross-border collaboration and dialogue, as regions face unique challenges and opportunities in their decolonisation efforts

    Perception of fire safety in properties adjoining filling stations in Lagos State

    Purpose -. Following recorded fatalities in and around Petrol Filling Stations (PFS) in Nigeria, this research explores the perception of fire safety among users of properties adjoining PFS in Lagos State towards understanding their preparedness for, or adaptability to possible disasters. Design / Methodology / Approach Qualitative and quantitative techniques were adopted, choosing the identified 17 PFS in the study area. Total of 154 properties around these locations were also purposively sampled for primary data collection. Secondary data were obtained from relevant town planning sources and official documents of the DPR.Findings – The respondents had co-existed with adjoining PFS for upwards of 7 years. Location of PFS did not fit into the cityscape plan. Most PFS did not comply with minimum locational requirements. Threats to life and properties had been continuous while property users are not well informed about hazard insurance. Research Limitations – The study collected data from PFS operators, and user sides. DPR was not heard out, regarding operational procedures. The level of fire insurance policy required by the occupiers of adjoining properties was also not addressed.Theoretical / Social / Practical Implications- PFS locations did not conform with the city landscape plan. The perception of fire safety was also significantly different between the two respondent-groups. The study recommended proper monitoring of siting of PFS by the DPR and mandatory compliance to Town Planning laws by operators.Originality / Value – The dangers being perennially anticipated by users of premises adjoining filling stations were highlighted.     Methods of Building Resilience Valuation: A Literature Review

    Resilience valuation appears to be gaining ground in the real estate and built environment profession globally, although its level of acceptance may not yet have been ascertained in Nigeria and other emerging economies. More than at any other time it has become imperative to examine investors' commitment to making buildings resilient in valuation practice. Today many countries are battling with the effects of extreme weather conditions, even as they confront the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. Against this backdrop, this article reviews the literature on the valuation of building resilience with a view to deepening the understanding and knowledge of valuers and other stakeholders. In achieving this aim, we undertake a review of different perspectives on resilience valuation methodologies and initiatives as well as their applications and the challenges faced in the valuation process. We found varying approaches to valuing resilience that cut across disciplines. Moreover, issues of green buildings and sustainability were also found to be prominent in the literature. While some approaches e.g., RDVM model, etc. are seen to be at infancy, others have been applied to specific situations. We therefore suggest a multidisciplinary approach to valuation of resilience in buildings

    The Lagos Lagoonal Economy up to the Present Time:

    This paper examines the economy of Lagos State in Nigeria as the product of a lagoonal construct. From colony status in 1861 which served the British Raj as a beachhead for penetrating the hinterland, the Lagos lagoonal system aided the steady rise of the city to assume ever-increasing sociopolitical significance, including the capital of the Colony as well as the newly independent Nigeria in 1960. These developments consolidated its lead in internally generated revenue (IGR) over other sub-national authorities. Primary and secondary data sources were used with qualitative analytical methodology, including quantitative illustrations and tables, to study the role of the lagoon system in the city’s overall morphology. The findings show that the lagoonal system critically supported the major productive sectors such as inland transportation, manufacturing, sand mining, real estate development, and mercantilism. The conclusion includes an analysis of two critical issues in the future of the megacity, namely, harnessing the waterways to ease longstanding commuting difficulties in a N41 trillion market touted as Africa’s 5th richest economy and the likely impact of emergent societal factors on its decline as a historic political and economic powerhouse

    Mathematical modeling of mosquito borne diseases with vertical transmissions as applied to Dengue

    Aedes aegypti mosquitoes transmit important mosquito borne diseases that include dengue, yellow fever, zika, chikungunya, rift valley, and west nile among others. The dynamics of these diseases are influenced by various factors such as population dynamics of humans and mosquitoes, mosquito behaviour, and transmission modes. This study focuses on multiple transmissions, where both vertical and horizontal modes are considered with application to dengue virus. We therefore present a model that incorporates vertical transmission within the mosquito population. Threshold quantities for the model are computed, with the mosquito extinction equilibrium being globally asymptotically stable when the basic offspring number (N0) is less than one, also, the disease free equilibrium is shown to be locally asymptotically stable when the basic reproduction number (R0) is less than one. The model is shown to undergo backward bifurcation, and conditions under which the disease free equilibrium would be globally asymptotically stable is presented.     This study investigated the effects of constructivist instructional model (5PCIM) on students’ achievement and interest in physics and chemistry in Imo State. Four research questions were asked, and Six hypotheses were formulated that gave this study a sense of direction. This study adopted quasi experimental non-equivalent control group design. The population for the study comprises all physics and chemistry students in Imo state. The sample of the study was 246 SSII physics and chemistry students drawn through multistage sampling technique. four instruments’ Physics and chemistry Achievement Test, Physics Interest Inventory and Chemistry Interest Inventory were used and validated by experts. The reliability coefficients obtained for the PAT, CAT, PII and the CII were 0.71, 0.73, 0.81 and 0.83 using Kuder Richardson and Chronbach-alpha procedure respectively. Data obtained from this study were analyzed. Mean and standard deviation scores were used to answer the six research questions while the eight hypotheses were tested at P<0.05 level of significance using Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA). The result showed that students taught using 5PCIM and PSIS obtained mean achievement score and mean interest score in physics and chemistry higher than those taught using Conventional Instructional Model (CIM). Gender did not influence significantly on mean achievement score and mean interest score of students taught using both 5PCIM and PSIS. Furthermore, the result revealed no significant interaction effect of gender and treatment on mean achievement score and mean interest score of students taught using both strategies. Therefore, this study recommended adequate training for teachers on the use of 5PCIM and PSIS which should be adopted in Nigerian secondary schools. It is effective in teaching and learning using 5PCIM and PSIS because both strategies promote the acquisition of scientific skills, technological skills, and even entrepreneurial skills

    Global Economic Uncertainty and Foreign Direct Investment: Evidence from Sub-Saharan Africa

    Given Africa’s relatively low success in attracting foreign direct investment inflows (FDI) over the past decades, particularly during times of global crises and high uncertainty, this study examined two key areas, which are the impact of global economic uncertainty on FDI inflows and the asymmetric relationship between FDI and global economic uncertainty in Sub-Saharan Africa. Our control variables are trade openness, gross domestic product, capital formation and market size. We used panel Auto-regressive Distribution Lag framework modelling and a panel of 21 countries from Sub-Saharan Africa over the period 1990-2023. Our result suggests an inverse but significant relationship exists between FDI and uncertainty, and the control variables positively intensify against mitigating the phenomenon. Based on the formal test of asymmetry, the outcome further indicates the existence of asymmetry in the long run. Overall, the study advocates the need to manage the extent of global uncertainty on the economic agent, such as FDI in Africa, in order to reduce the excruciating impact.&nbsp

    PREDICTING STOCKS PRICE MOVEMENT IN NIGERIA: A MARKOVIAN ANALYSIS

    Stock market is an important platform in an economy that supports several key sectors of the economy as the movement of stock prices in the financial market provides a fundamental indicator in determining the strength and altitude of development in an economy.This study examined the use of Markov chain model to predict stock price movement of banks’ stocks with a focus on a deposit money bank (DMB) stock.which is one of highly traded shares in the Nigerian stocks market. The study use daily closing stock prices of deposit money bank between 2010 to 2015. The daily closing stock prices were converted to weekly prices which were used to derive a three- state of increase (Inc), reduction (Redc) and stable(S) states for the application of markovian analysis with the aid of MATLAB software. The model was used to predict the short-run and long-run stock prices of the DMB. The study concluded that the markov chain analysis can be used to determine the steady state of the DMB shares for the period under the three different states. The findings shows that Markov chain technique can be used to estimate stocks’ prices movement which will assist investors, stock brokers and other stakeholders in the capital market in taking optimal decisions which will give confidence to the market and thereby attract more participants; which will lead to further growth of Nigerian stocks market

    Gamma Generalized Power Lomax: A Novel Distribution in Modelling Covid-19 Data

    In this study, we developed a flexible form of Power Lomax distribution called Gamma Power Lomax distribution. This distribution was obtained by combining the Power Lomax and Gamma distributions to generates a novel life-time distribution with three parameters. Different structural characteristics of the new distribution have been determined and analysed which includes moments, moment generating function, order statistics, and incomplete moments. Distinct plots depict the behaviour of the density and the distribution function. The maximum likelihood estimation method was applied to estimate the distribution parameters. The practicability of the stated distribution is proven by Covid-19 data set. The objective of this study is to establish an optimum statistical model considering current covid-19 pandemic
