Ritual Language: Soyinka’s Contributions to the Debate on Language Use in "Death and the King’s Horseman"

    No full text
There is an agelong debate on the issue of language in African literature. Many African countries were colonised by the West and they enforced their languages on the colonised. African writers are, however, divided over which language that best conveys their thoughts, culture and tradition. While Ngugi wa Thiong’o advocates the use of indigenous languages, in this case, Gikuyu and Swahili, Chinua Achebe promotes the use of the language of the colonialists in so far as it is used creatively to express the African worldview. This paper examines Wole Soyinka’s use of ritual language in Death and the King’s Horseman as a unique contribution to the controversy about the ideal language for African literary expression especially in drama. The paper is a theoretical analysis of the language debate in which Soyinka’s text is considered as an exemplification of Achebe’s position. Nonetheless, references will be made to instances of ritual language such as the use of chants, rites, incantations, drumming and dancing. Analysis of the play reveals that Soyinka’s usage is ritualistic yet dramatic but also couched in African imagery and anecdotes even as it is accessible to the world. The paper concludes that although Soyinka has been accused of difficulty, complexity and inaccessibility in his use of words (Jeyifo xviii) in many of his creative works, his use of language in Death and the King’s Horseman encapsulates creativity, an index of ritual language of African identity and culture

A Generalized Differential Operator in Function Theory with Applications to Coefficient Bounds of p-Valent Analytic Functions

    No full text
In this paper, a new differential operator that generalizes several well-established operators in geometric function theory by incorporating principles of q-calculus and p-valent analytic functions is introduced. The key objectives include establishing its equivalence to existing operators and deriving coefficient bounds for the associated p-valent function classes. Using q-differentiation and multiplier transformations, we formulate a generalized class of analytic functions and derive coefficient bounds within the unit disk. Numerical comparisons and graphical illustrations reveal that the new operator yields finer results

POETRY AND THE POET IN CONTEMPORARY NIGERIA

    No full text
Present-day Nigeria has been variously characterised as infernal, hellish, grueling and as danse macabre on account, principally, of the insupportable socio-economic hardships Nigerians are going through amid official apathy and criminal dereliction of duty. Despite this, there is an overwhelming efflorescence of creative activity, especially the production and reception of verse. This study, examines and maps the trajectory of Nigerian poetry from the oral beginnings through the various generational cohorts to the present, highlighting the rise and rise of verse-making in Nigeria. But it is not all about quantity but, more important, the quality of written poetry coming out of Nigeria today. The fate and fortune of digitally-mediated verse are also interrogated in this study even as the work periscopes the likely tramlines of verse in the future. It concludes that, given the incredible amount of poetry being produced across the nation, accompanied by the equally impressive efforts of the Nigerian Diaspora, the future of Nigerian poetry is bright

    Get PDF
The study analysed the influence of ownership structure on the firm performance of fifteen (15) listed consumer goods firms in Nigeria from 2011 to 2021. The firm's performance was proxied by return on assets and enterprise value. The ownership structure was measured by the chief executive officer (CEO), board, and block ownership. The findings show that CEO ownership significantly positively affects the return on assets of listed consumer goods firms in Nigeria. Board and block ownership have an insignificant influence on the return on assets of listed consumer goods firms in Nigeria. Similarly, block ownership significantly positively affects the enterprise value of listed consumer goods firms in Nigeria. CEO and board ownership have an insignificant effect on the enterprise value of listed consumer goods firms in Nigeria. The study recommends that block owners should be allowed to use their skills and experience to help companies achieve their goals

THE DIVIDEND RELEVANCE THEORY AND FIRM VALUE OF LISTED NIGERIAN DEPOSIT MONEY BANKS (DMBs)

    Get PDF
The main objective of every firm is to create corporate value. Studies have shown that shareholders benefit more from the firm as its value increases. The two opposing views on dividend policy and its effect on share price are the dividend relevance theory posited by Lintner (1956) and the dividend irrelevance theory put forth by Miller and Modigliani (1961). The puzzle of the relevance of dividend payment on a firm’s value remains inconclusive and controversial, despite the substantial body of literature on dividend policy, thus requiring continuous improvement. It is on this premise of inconclusive results that spurred the current study. The study uses secondary data on listed Deposit Money Banks in Nigeria (DMBs), which spans a ten (10) year period from 2011 to 2020. The data was estimated using the panel regression analysis, and the findings showed that dividend payout significantly and positively influenced the firm value of listed banks in Nigeria. The study recommends that investors exhibit care in studying and understanding the dividend policy of firms to guide their investment decisions.&nbsp

EMOTIONAL LABOUR AND SATISFACTION OF EMPLOYEES IN COMMERCIAL BANKS IN LAGOS STATE, NIGERIA

    Get PDF
The relationship between emotional labour and job satisfaction has received little attention in the literature. Emotional labour in this study was measured using surface acting and deep acting. This study is hinged on the behavioural school of management thought. To meet the study's aims, two different hypotheses were developed. The participants in this study are employees of selected commercial banks in Lagos State. The data gathered from respondents was analysed using Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modelling. Statistical analysis revealed that deep acting is a significant predictor of job satisfaction while surface acting does not predict job satisfaction. As a result of this research, bank management should emphasize strategies to minimize workplace stress by creating working arrangements that foster stronger relationships between employers and workers, as well as improve employee health. This will reduce absenteeism and increase employees' commitment

Perception of tourists on air transportation service qualities and performance in Nigeria

    Get PDF
Air transport plays a vital role in the tourism industry, and understanding tourists’ perceptions of its influence is crucial for tourism development. This study seeks to investigate tourists’ perceptions of air transport and tourism performance, using Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, Nigeria, as a case study. The study surveyed 289 tourists using purposeful sampling techniques and analyzed the collected data using Stata for both descriptive and inferential statistics. We used frequencies, tables, charts, mean, and standard deviation to describe the data, and employed the stepwise multiple regression model to explain tourists' perceptions of tourism performance. The result shows that tourists perceive air transport as a significant factor influencing their overall travel experience and tourism performance. Key aspects of air transport influencing tourism activities include convenience, accessibility, frequency, reliability, cost-effectiveness, comfort, and speed. The study identifies reducing delays and cancellations, enhancing airport facilities, and improving ground transportation options. These findings have implications for airport transport management, airlines, and tourism stakeholders seeking to enhance the tourism experience and promote destination competitiveness

FLOOD RISK ASSESSMENT AND VULNERABILITY MAPPING USING ANALYTICAL HIERARCHY PROCESS AND GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEM: A CASE STUDY OF MINNA, NIGER STATE

    Get PDF
Flooding is one of the most damaging disasters worldwide, and natural and human activities influence it. It has caused destruction and loss of lives and properties, which calls for spatial scope and mitigation methods for a better understanding. This research aims to map and identify flood risk regions in Minna, Niger State, using a multi-criteria decision-making tool – the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Geographic Information System (GIS). The AHP is the foundation for the study in determining and integrating the weighted percentage of flood criteria within the ArcGIS interface. The criteria considered for this research include Elevation, Topographic Wetness Index (TWI), Slope, Precipitation, Drainage Density, Soil Type, Proximity to River, and Land Use Land Cover (LULC). The resultant AHP flood risk map shows that 22.25% of the study area is at high and very high risk of flooding, 53.7% has a moderate susceptibility level, while 24.05% is at low and very low risk of flooding. Low slopes, high drainage density, and built-up regions are observed to be characteristic of these communities, which are at a very high risk of flooding. The result of the analysis urges the authorities in Minna, Niger State, to devise appropriate plans for potential floods in the future, such as proper maintenance of the drainage system and creating awareness of flood risk

ASSESSING THE ROLE OF AUGMENTED REALITY (AR) IN ENHANCING CONCEPTUAL UNDERSTANDING AMONG EARLY CHILDHOOD LEARNERS IN OYO METROPOLIS

    No full text
This study assesses the impact of Augmented Reality (AR) on the conceptual knowledge of early childhood pupils in Oyo Metropolis, Nigeria. Using a descriptive survey research design, 400 pupils from 10 public schools were randomly selected. The study assessed conceptual knowledge using a validated questionnaire (r = 0.75), and were analyzed using one-way ANOVA. Results indicated a significant association between AR use and conceptual understanding (F = 5.42, p = 0.003), with frequent AR users demonstrating higher understanding of abstract concepts (F = 4.12, p = 0.002). Challenges encountered were the scarcity of available AR tools and frequency of use. The study concludes that AR significantly improves learning outcomes by making abstract concepts tangible and engaging. Based on these findings, the researcher recommends that teachers integrate AR software into their teaching practice and that stakeholders provide adequate training and resources to support this technological shift

Political Islam, judicial corruption and the realisation of social justice in Nigeria

    Get PDF
The Judicial arm of government is often touted as the last hope of the commoner. It then presupposes that this all-important arm of government cannot be left in the hands of individuals whose integrity, sense of equity, fair play and justice are in doubt.  It is an arm of government that requires people of impeccable character and absolute fidelity to justice. Since the return to civilian rule in 1999, the Nigerian Judiciary has been enmeshed in varied forms of corruption.  This study, historically and analytically, examines corruption in Nigeria's justice administration system.  The study revealed that the colonial origin of the state, its nature and character, play significant roles in the administration and dispensation of justice.  Not only that, it further argues that the organisation of the state in line with the exploitative capitalist and neo-liberal political, economic and social policies, which have intensified poverty, deepened inequality, decaying infrastructure and mass unemployment, cannot help but engender pervasive corruption. This perhaps explains why hitherto efforts to combat corruption in Nigeria have yielded little or no positive results. The paper then avers that Islam, within its doctrine, includes a system of justice and the organisation of society in an equitable and egalitarian manner that can help insulate the Nigerian judiciary and the judicial system as a whole from the current unenviable position it is in. The study concluded that the independence of the judiciary guaranteed by law comes with significant responsibility, and that any society where justice is either for sale or for the highest bidder cannot guarantee peace or social justice, which are critical desiderata for the social, economic, and political emancipation of any society
