From Page to Practice: The Impact of a Guided Book Study on Classroom Teacher Perceptions of Cultural Proficiency and Culturally Responsive Teaching at One Middle School
This qualitative study investigated the impact of a guided book study on middle school classroom teacher perceptions of cultural proficiency and culturally responsive teaching (CRT) practices in one middle school environment. Data were collected from seven middle school teachers who participated in the study. A participatory action research (PAR) approach, an online interest survey, reflection questions, an anticipation guide, Get Centered questions, interview questions, and field notes were utilized to gather the perceptions. The outcome of the study demonstrated a shift in teacher perceptions regarding cultural proficiency and CRT practices. The participants shared an increased understanding and willingness to attempt new strategies and implement the new learning in their instructional practices. The study also revealed the challenges and barriers that impacted teacher performance in the classroom prior to and during the study. Overall, the findings showed teacher collaboration, professional learning opportunities, and access to resources to support teachers in their teaching practices and creating a supportive learning environment
A School-Wide Behavior Management Program Evaluation: Teacher Perceptions of Gamification in the Alternative Setting
The program evaluation provided an understanding of the effectiveness of gamification as a behavior management tool and its impact on student behaviors as perceived by teachers. The evaluation followed a sixth- through eighth-grade alternative public school whose vision is to provide a structured, safe, and motivating learning environment where students grow academically and behaviorally responsible. The two-phased mixed study allowed participants to share their perceptions and satisfaction with using gamification as an effective behavior management tool. The program evaluation took on the epistemological position that staff contributions significantly impact behaviors, dependent on the two constructs: (a) user attitude and (b) user intention model through the technology acceptance model (TAM). The research design used Guskey’s (2002) five critical levels of professional development (PD)—reaction, learning, organization, knowledge, and learning outcomes. The key findings indicated that implementing gamification in the short term had a positive influence on student engagement and motivation. The findings suggest that gamification could be viewed as a means for improving productivity and user satisfaction. TAM has played a crucial role in shaping user perceptions regarding the adoption of gamification
