Factors That Motivate Special Education Teachers to Stay in Their Profession in a Rural South Carolina School District

This study was designed to contribute to our understanding of the different motivating factors that contribute to the long-term retention of special education teachers after they have been in the field for over 5 years. They set out to ascertain predominant mechanisms that motivate these teachers to stay in their positions as well as to inform on the associated struggles and support structures that are helping to both retain their teaching workforce as well as to support their commitment to their teaching lives. Using a descriptive convergent parallel mixed methods design, the study combined quantitative data from online surveys with qualitative findings derived from virtual focus group interviews. Conducted in a rural school district in South Carolina, the study relied on experienced special education teachers to inform this multifaceted perspective on retention. This would come to include professionals demonstrating strong support for their colleagues, autonomy regarding instructional decision-making, highly satisfactory ratings on the job, and the ability to be emotionally resilient. However, according to the study, burnout and occupational stress were major factors in attrition. These results point to a dire need for follow-up professional development efforts of great quality and organizational assistance as well as systemic measures that decrease tension and promote the health of teachers. This study provides important implications for educational leaders and policymakers eager to bolster workforce stability and support within the realm of special education

Knowledge is Power: Educating the Community About the Dangers of Vaping

Background: The purpose of this quality improvement (QI) project was to increase knowledge among parents, coaches, teachers, nurses, community leaders, and members about the dangers of e-cigarette use among adolescents by implementing a community-based education session vital to protecting the health and well-being of adolescents in the target community. Education and preventative measures have been proven to decrease the use of tobacco cigarettes, and the same needs to be done with e-cigarettes and vaping, especially among adolescents, to protect the future of their health. Education and prevention programs are not only targeted at adolescents but also at adults who can influence adolescents when it comes to e-cigarette use. Many adolescents see coaches and school nurses as trusted adults; educating these groups on the dangers of vaping would increase the number of adults able to influence adolescents positively. Method: Fourteen parents, coaches, teachers, community leaders, and nurses participated in a 1-hour educational session. Each participant was asked to voluntarily complete a five-question pre-intervention and post-intervention survey to determine if education increased knowledge regarding e-cigarette use among adolescents within the target community. Results: Data collected from the pre-intervention and post-intervention surveys revealed an increased knowledge about the dangers of e-cigarette use and an increased understanding of the importance of educating adolescents about the dangers of e-cigarette use after the educational training

Overdose Response Training for Volunteers in a Homeless Shelter

The opioid overdose epidemic is a critical health crisis across the country. The homeless population is substantially more at risk of overdose death compared to the general public. Naloxone is a life-saving medication for reversing opioid overdose and is available to ambulance and emergency care services, but support persons are also in regular contact with opioid users and training (Fine et al., 2022). This DNP Project was created to educate volunteers at a homeless shelter in the event of an opioid overdose. The objective of the project was to increase the knowledge of opioid overdose signs and symptoms and naloxone administration for the volunteers at a homeless shelter

Exploring Commonalities of Effective Elementary Teachers

Low performing schools have consistently faced challenges in narrowing the achievement gap and meeting the needs of diverse learners, especially those living in high poverty situations. Effective teaching can significantly influence student outcomes and positively shape students’ academic trajectories through the use of high-impact strategies and relationship-centered instruction. This convergent mixed-methods study aimed to define and understand the characteristics of effective teachers, investigate the perceptions of effective teachers about the reasons for their success, and identify the strategies effective teachers use to support students in low performing elementary schools in a North Carolina school district. Quantitative data sources included a background screener survey, the Teachers\u27 Sense of Efficacy Scale (TSES), and ratings on the teacher evaluation instrument. Qualitative data came from teacher interviews and classroom observation anecdotal notes. These data sets helped to identify patterns among the group of effective teachers, revealing that effective teachers shared similar instructional strategies, beliefs, and classroom management practices. The results of this study suggest that effective elementary teachers identify relationships, tailored instruction, and reflection as key contributors to their success. The participants reported high confidence in their use of differentiation, but observations showed limited use of individualized instructional strategies. Further research should explore similar questions across grade levels and investigate how principal leadership directly contributes to building teacher effectiveness in low performing schools

End-Stage Renal Disease: A Clinical Review on Renal Replacement Therapy Outcomes

Introduction: End-stage renal disease (ESRD) is a worldwide issue that occurs when the kidneys fail to filter out harmful waste from the blood. The only treatment options for patients with this diagnosis are kidney transplant, hemodialysis (HD), and peritoneal dialysis (PD). HD involves surgical prep with vascular access and is only performed in clinic. HD is also the most commonly used form of renal replacement therapy (RRT). Peritoneal dialysis is performed through the peritoneum and can be done in clinic or at home. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the overall patient outcomes in those undergoing HD compared to PD. Methods: PubMed was searched with the terms “end-stage renal disease” “kidney failure” “peritoneal dialysis” and “hemodialysis”. Operators and filters narrowed results to 6 relevant, quality articles to review. Results: 4 articles were systematic reviews and meta-analysis exploring variable factors of patients’ outcomes. One article was a randomized, non-inferiority trial investigated the burden of different RRTs. The final article is a small study performed investigating neurological impacts of RRT. Overall, when assessing quality of life outcomes, PD was favored. Discussion: The articles reviewed produced mixed results. PD appears to have better patient outcomes in terms of quality of life but does not appear to be the superior option of care in dialysis patients. While results indicated a slight preference for PD, overall results are inconclusive on the superiority of one method compared to the other. Further research is needed
