Duracell CR2016 batteries - behavior under different external loads
When connecting a voltage source to a conductor, an electric field is created from the source\u27s applied potential difference, exerting forces on charges within the conductor. [1] The flow of charges is proportional to the voltage, a relationship known as Ohm\u27s Law. This law also states that the flow of current in a device is inversely proportional to the resistance of the device itself, which depends on its shape, size, and material. Resistance can also come from external sources, which when placed in a series circuit, combine with a device\u27s internal resistance to create a larger load. In this experiment we tested how increasing external loads affect the performance of Duracell CR2016 batteries. To determine its effect, we analyzed its current, voltage, and battery capacity.https://commons.stmarytx.edu/rscpos25/1068/thumbnail.jp
The impact of employer-provided drug/alcohol education on marijuana and alcohol use in young adults.
According to the American Society of Addiction Medicine, addiction is a treatable, chronic medical disease involving complex interactions among brain circuits, genetics, the environment, and an individual’s life experiences (1). People with addiction use substances or engage in behaviors that become compulsive and often continue despite harmful consequences. The most common addictions in the United States are alcohol and marijuana (2). In the U.S., 59.277 million people twelve and older have used illegal drugs or misused prescription drugs. Out of the 138.522 million Americans who overdrink alcohol, 28.32 million have an alcohol use disorder (3).
Since alcohol and drug abuse is a major problem in the U.S., several preventative programs and support groups have been created to educate people on how the overconsumption of drugs and alcohol can negatively affect them. The most common service provided for employees is the Employment Assistance Programs (EAP’s), which offer several ways of assistance such as employee education and therapy (4). This study strives to specifically assess whether these preventative programs prevented individuals from abusing marijuana or alcoholhttps://commons.stmarytx.edu/rscpos25/1061/thumbnail.jp
Remembering ancient heroes: How literary devices InBeowulf and Homer Assist in poetic recollection
In both Ancient Greek and Old English traditions of poetry, memory is an essential part in the retention of the language and story in the culture’s history. Beowulf shares some poetic lyrical elements with Homer’s epithets. Though both poems have unique and different poetic meters, they possess similar tactics in the language to move the story along while providing poets “footholds” in the poem to remember the story. To deliver these stories of heroes to the public, the sophists of Greece and the scops of Celtic England had only one tool available for the record of these lengthy poems: their capacity for memorization. In the Odyssey and in Beowulf, the authors use elements of language, such as syntactical choices, phonology, and the repetition of certain epithets or kennings to carry the poem along. These elements also work as memory aids or mnemonics for the oral poet when reciting and performing these works.https://commons.stmarytx.edu/rscpos25/1029/thumbnail.jp
Determinants of voting behavior in the 2020 U.S. presidential election: Issues, demographics, and the pandemic\u27s influence
• The 2020 election caused many shifts in how certain groups voted based on their views on several issues which is why this research is essential.
• Leading up to the election, the top issues among voters according to news sites were the state of the economy, attitudes on how the government handled the COVID-19 pandemic, and concern over the immigration crisis.
• COVID-19 was a main factor in causing individuals to vote for Joe Biden as president.https://commons.stmarytx.edu/rscpos25/1025/thumbnail.jp

Towards Sustainable Energy: Design and Preliminary Testing of Tidal Current Turbines
As the energy demand constantly increases and traditional energy resources decrease, incorporating sustainable alternatives has become necessary. In this context, this research attempts to provide a new solution for energy scarcity in regions that lack electricity, especially those located near large ocean areas. The objective of this project was to engineer and investigate an ideal prototype to transform power generation. Through detailed design and testing, this project seeks to reveal the potential of tidal energy, offering an alternative to communities struggling with energy distribution.
The research focuses on utilizing custom-designed propellers, which are 3D printed and installed on an open flow channel that takes advantage of the water moved through it to move the propellers, converting kinetic energy into electrical energy.https://commons.stmarytx.edu/rsc25pres/1004/thumbnail.jp
Section 1983 municipal liabilty and the plaintiff\u27s burden of proof for custom and policy
This piece explores the rules and standard of review for municipal liability outlined in Monell and then Brown by defining the purpose of those court decisions and outlining the custom and policy requirements. Then, this piece discusses three Fifth Circuit cases that outline the current approach the appellate body takes in analyzing Section 1983 municipal liability claims. Next, several cases from other circuit courts and their application of Section 1983 for municipal liability are analyzed. Then the Fifth Circuit Court application of Section 1983 is compared and contrasted to the application of the other circuit court cases. Finally, several questions left unanswered in case law will be examined, namely, what evidence is sufficient to prove custom. To conclude, potential solutions will be presented to address the plaintiff’s difficulties in meeting the evidentiary burden for Section 1983 under Monell.https://commons.stmarytx.edu/rsc25pres/1017/thumbnail.jp
Rattlers Remember
St. Mary’s students have been collecting stories about the history of campus spaces and how our faculty, staff, and students have experienced these sites. Rattlers Remember brings together these stories with images, oral histories, and other primary stories to showcase the history of St. Mary’shttps://commons.stmarytx.edu/rattlersremember/1000/thumbnail.jp
How do Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) Behave in the Presence of a Swimming Researcher?
Longitudinal observations of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) in managed care provide opportunities to assess behavior within different contexts, which may provide insights into individual and population wellbeing (e.g., Delfour et al., 2021; Serres et al., 2021). Since 2019, a longitudinal study on space use by bottlenose dolphins housed at a lagoon-based facility in Roatán, Honduras, has been conducted. Dolphin behavior and location data were collected with the goal of comparing behavior without humans present to varying contexts in which humans were present. The purpose of this descriptive study was to assess behaviors exhibited by dolphins in close proximity to a swimming, non-interactive researcher, which represent a subset of the available data. Secondarily, observed behaviors directed toward the swimming researcher were examined during each session to determine if researcher presence was associated with specific behaviors.https://commons.stmarytx.edu/rscpos24/1045/thumbnail.jp
Comparing Activity Levels of Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) During Snorkels to a Swimming Researcher
Bottlenose dolphins under professional care are provided with a range of enrichments that have a variety of features and levels of complexity at various frequencies (Lauderdale et al., 2022). In a previous study conducted by Brensing et al. (2015), they found that dolphins seemed to be attracted to adult swimmers, but only if they had ample space to swim. The purpose of this study is to examine dolphin activity level under two different conditions with humans in the water. We hypothesize that dolphin activity level will be higher during snorkel sessions than a single swimming researcher because there are more people in the waterhttps://commons.stmarytx.edu/rscpos24/1041/thumbnail.jp
