Texas\u27 EV tax: Right or wrong?

    No full text
This poster was created for the 5th annual Research Showcase. From the poster: Texas passed SB505 in, May 2023. Enacted in September 2023. SB505 → 200annualfee(bundledwiththe200 annual fee (bundled with the 50.75 auto registration). Additional $400 fee for initial EV purchase. This would mean the EV owners pay for their two years of ownership upfront. Critics say SB505 targets EV’s and disincentivizes a greener societal approach. Does this law unfairly target EV’s and/or does it make owning an EV more expensive than gas-powered?https://commons.stmarytx.edu/rscpos25/1005/thumbnail.jp

A Research proposal: Morality as a social construct

Separating our minds from the constraints of our social constructs allows us to analyze problems from a place somewhere remotely close to unbiased. However, it is only after we understand that our sense of morale [i.e. right and wrong] originated as social constructs—that is to say, right and wrong have no reason to exist in an objective world. The very concept of right and wrong have been socially constructed from the beginning; they are, in their most simplistic nature, entirely subjective. Subjective in this sense means outside of the very people who speak of the words right and wrong in this society, those very words would cease to have meaning. Again, one may ask: why do we care? To state this question in other terms; should we care?https://commons.stmarytx.edu/rscpos25/1009/thumbnail.jp

Modeling student depression with decision trees: Predictive insights from data

    No full text
    • Student depression is a growing public health concern that adversely affects academic performance and general well-being. • According to Ibrahim et al. (2013), the prevalence of depression among university students ranges from 10% to 85%, with an overall weighted mean of 30.6%. • Factors such as financial challenges, academic stress, and social adjustments significantly contribute to higher depression rates among students compared to the general population. • Studies have shown that female students are more prone to depression due to hormonal, psychological, and social factors (Altemus et al., 2014). Depression impacts academic performance, reducing cognitive function and increasing dropout rates (Eisenberg et al., 2007). • Therefore, proactive mental healthcare interventions are vital for student well-being and academic success. • Predictive modeling using decision trees offers a data-driven approach to understanding complex relationships between demographic, academic, and lifestyle factors and depression levels, enabling more targeted interventions.https://commons.stmarytx.edu/rscpos25/1076/thumbnail.jp
