Minimal Anti-Cancer Effects of Mushroom-Derived Compounds Hispidin and Chaga Extract on Ewing Sarcoma Cells
Ewing sarcoma is a rare and aggressive cancer of adolescents and young adults driven by the EWSR1–FLI1 gene fusion. Standard treatments include chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation, though survival rates remain low. Natural compounds such as hispidin, derived from fungi, and Chaga mushroom extract have shown potential anti-cancer effects by disrupting cell cycle progression and promoting apoptosis in other cancer models. In this study, we tested the effects of hispidin and Chaga extract on Ewing sarcoma cells to evaluate their ability to suppress cell growth and identify potential therapeutic benefits.https://commons.stmarytx.edu/biostulab25/1003/thumbnail.jp

CURE Battery Discharge Project: How (un)reliable were the batteries we bought?
The idea behind battery reliability is much beyond common knowledge. It is more than just batteries charging and discharging our common household items on a day-to-day basis. Battery reliability means to understand their parameters such as voltage, capacity, and internal resistance. This doesn\u27t just mean battery reliability, but the reliability of data measurements pertaining to batteries. Data reliability regards to the integrity of measurements, consistency, and the quality behind what the analysis will tell us about batteries.https://commons.stmarytx.edu/rscpos25/1053/thumbnail.jp
Playful paws: Are there sex differences in playfulness with freshwater otters?
Personality is crucial for understanding the lives of species because it affects how they survive, the way they move, reactions to diseases, and much more (Merrick & Koprowski, 2017; Wolf & Weissing, 2012). The importance of this research is to understand how biological sex may interact with otter personalities through social interactions amongst other otters, the physical world, and humans. Female and male otters vary in the way that they play, with males playing more rough than females (Green, 2000). Play, which is associated with rock juggling, decreases as otters mature (Alliston et al., 2020). Females used object play more than males (Alliston et al., 2020). Social and locomotor play is preferred by otters over object play (Beckel, 1991). Purpose The purpose of this study is to evaluate the influence of sex and age on the personality trait of playfulness within three contexts: with other otters, the physical world, and humans. Hypotheses Sex can have an affect on the enthusiastic playful interactions with other otters, people, and the physical world There will be a difference in playfulness with otters who are older versus those who are younger.https://commons.stmarytx.edu/rscpos25/1057/thumbnail.jp
The names we bear: A historical timeline of labels and identities among mexican americans
My analysis explores the evolving identity of Mexican Americans shaped by both historical and social experiences. Following these events, I examined how their contributions towards the development of identity, specifically focusing on assimilation and cultural preservation. Through this posing the question on how identity was influenced and maintained during these pivotal eras and whether identity can be defined or found.https://commons.stmarytx.edu/rscpos25/1055/thumbnail.jp
The presence of substance use in individuals from a non-traditional family structure
This study will analyze the relationship between family structure and substance use behaviors among young adults aged 18 to 25. The aim is to compare substance use between participants raised in nontraditional family structures (foster care or adoptive families) and those raised in biological families. The study will use a cross-sectional design where 200 participants will be recruited (100 from each family structure group). Data collection included the Drug Use Disorders Identification Test (DUDIT), an Intake Form Assessment, and the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ). The participants will complete these surveys that will be used to measure the relationship between substance use and family structure. The results will be analyzed using an independent samples t-test and a Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient.https://commons.stmarytx.edu/rscpos25/1038/thumbnail.jp
Acute Effects of High-Intensity Functional Training on Cognitive Function
CrossFit, a high-intensity functional training program, has gained widespread popularity for its physical fitness benefits, but its acute effects on cognitive function are not well understood. This study investigated the immediate impact of a CrossFit workout on cognitive performance, compared to a resting condition. Twenty experienced CrossFit athletes participated in two conditions: (1) a 12-minutes high-intensity CrossFit session and (2) a resting session involving 12 minutes of seated magazine reading. Cognitive performance was assessed using a flanker task, measuring reaction time and response accuracy as indicators of cognitive processing and inhibitory control.
Results revealed significantly better performance in the flanker task following the CrossFit workout compared to the resting condition. These findings suggest that high-intensity exercise acutely enhances cognitive performance, particularly in tasks requiring quick decision-making and attention.https://commons.stmarytx.edu/rsc25pres/1002/thumbnail.jp
Sighting the Scope of a Lawyer’s Representation
Clients engage lawyers for many reasons. Regardless of the circumstances, however, the lawyer and the client need to agree on the scope of the lawyer’s representation, meaning the legal services the lawyer will perform for the client. The client must agree to and understand the scope of the lawyer’s representation as aspects of establishing her objectives for the matter and thereafter evaluating whether the lawyer is achieving those objectives. The client must also understand the scope of the representation to be able to decide whether the matter’s potential expense justifies its pursuit and to gauge the reasonableness of the lawyer’s fees. At bottom, the importance of the client’s agreement to, and understanding of, the scope of representation is most easily appreciated if the attorney-client relationship is analogized to a joint venture.
From a lawyer’s perspective, the scope of representation is central to various forms of professional responsibility and liability risk. Indeed, a lawyer’s duties to a client are framed by the scope of the representation. As a component of scope, a lawyer normally must abide by a client’s decisions concerning the objectives of the representation. From a professional liability standpoint, a lawyer typically is not liable for professional negligence—commonly referred to as legal malpractice—for failing to act outside the scope of representation. Similarly, while lawyers are fiduciaries to their clients, a lawyer’s fiduciary duties are confined to the scope of the representation.
In summary, few, if any, professional responsibility and liability concepts are as consequential for lawyers and clients as the scope of representatio
Heteroleptic self-assembly of platinum metallocycles based on naphthalene-diimide and aromatic dicarboxylate
A core-substituted naphthalene-diimide, functionalized with pyridinyl phenyl and octyl groups, was synthesized via Suzuki coupling and self-assembled with Pt(II) and Pd(II) phosphane triflates. The resulting triangular metallocycle structures were characterized by various methods, showing solvent-dependent UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence, and self-assembled into nanostructures.https://commons.stmarytx.edu/rsc25pres/1012/thumbnail.jp
