    The Deterrent Impact of Capital Punishment; A statistical Analysis

    Violent crime and our nation’s efforts to reduce homicide rates, such as capital punishment, have always been divisive issues in criminology and political science. In an effort to contribute to the discourse surrounding these multifaceted issues, this study and its preliminary findings aim to investigate whether the implementation of the death penalty has had a statistically significant impact in deterring homicide throughout the United States. This has involved an evaluation of quantitative data regarding capital punishment and homicide from 2010 to 2022 to gain an understanding of a possible relationship between capital punishment and homicide rates. We utilized various bivariate statistical techniques, including paired t-tests and independent samples t-tests, to assess the relationship between capital punishment and homicide rates. Preliminary analyses indicate that capital punishment may have some deterrent effect on homicide rates. Since the statistical significances found may be marginal, it would be beneficial to conduct further research with continued statistical testing and additional controls. Our findings only highlight how necessary it is to draw more conclusions regarding the effectiveness of capital punishment.https://commons.stmarytx.edu/rsc25pres/1019/thumbnail.jp

    Characterization of Transmission Gratings in Photorefractive Materials

    Measuring the transmitted and diffracted beam powers while writing and/or probing the grating with a writing or probe beam is a simple characterization method of transmission gratings. The transmission grating is written in a doped lithium niobate crystal using an argon laser beam of 514.5 nm wavelength. This transmission grating is probed using a helium-neon 632.6 nm laser beam at appropriate Bragg incidence. By scanning the probe beam across the grating, the transmission grating profile can be characterized.     This platform is a mail delivery notification system to assist school mailrooms, specifically the St. Mary’s University mailroom, in notifying users of the mailroom when packages have arrived, creating one location where all mail information can be found and overall improving the efficiency of the mailroom. Students and faculty at St. Mary’s University have access to a mail room to receive packages. This is very useful, especially for those who stay on campus or who want an external location to receive mail. Now that recipients receive an email when a package is delivered, the main concern of picking up a package before it is disposed of has been reduced. However, it is still inconvenient for students who live in an on-campus dorm to repeatedly check their dorm room mailbox when expecting a letter, because no notification is sent when letters are delivered. If the student is not expecting to receive a letter (perhaps a bill, money sent from family, or other important and timesensitive notices) it can pose a massive inconvenience for them. Lastly, for newer students especially, students must scour the St. Mary’s website to determine where the mailroom is, mailroom hours, what their dorm address is, how to order packages to this address, how to send mail, etc., and all this information is found in different places. The approach is to create a mail delivery notification mobile application to solve this problem. The app will have two interfaces, one for the students and faculty who will receive their mail, and one for those operating in the mailroom center. The student will be able to see when their package has arrived and where it is located, view helpful information about sending and receiving mail, and even send in help tickets. The administrators will be able to scan in packages, send notifications, search for packages, search for students, resolve help tickets, and monitor storage space all from the mobile app.https://commons.stmarytx.edu/rscpos24/1042/thumbnail.jp

    Tripodal naphthalene mono imide chemosensor for detection of metal ions

    1,8-Naphthalimide is an excellent fluorophore (fluorescent compound) with long emission wavelength band (400-600 nm), a large stokes shift, insensitive to pH and synthetic versatility. Triazole functional group has been used as binding sites for various metal ions in particular Zn(II), Cu(II) and Fe(III) metal ions. Based on naphthalimide as fluorophore and triazole as binding site, a new tripodal chemosensors has been designed and synthesized by copper catalyzed Huisgen Azide Alkyne cycloaddition reaction (known as click reaction). Its photophysical properties with various metal ions were investigated by fluorescence spectroscopy. Binding studies with various metal ions such as Zn(II), Cd(II) and Fe(III) by fluorescence and UV-Vis absorbance are under study in various solvent.     Trading Places: An Education for Legal Employers: A View from the Perspective of a New Generation of Legal Talent

    Most lawyers remember the stress associated with walking into their first job interview. The goal being to get the interviewer to “pick me.” Today, legal employers need to be prepared to be more of the interviewee than the interviewer in the hiring process. Over the past few decades, much focus has been on identifying the skills essential to success in the legal profession—mainly those skills and traits legal employers view as important when hiring new associates. These findings led to changes in legal education in order to prepare law students for entering the employment market and successfully securing a position. Recent changes in the legal employment market, legal education, and a generational shift in the talent pool indicate a need to redirect the focus from what legal employers want to what the new generation of potential legal employees view as essential to their success and satisfaction in the legal profession. Studies have shown a decline in interest in pursuing a traditional path to success in the legal profession and a shortage of talented new lawyers willing to fill available positions. This, coupled with the impact of “the Great Resignation,” will likely have a systemic effect on the ability of law firms to hire and maintain new talent and keep up with the increasing, changing needs of private clients. The effects will also be felt across those institutions relying on talented lawyers to serve the public, such as government entities and non-profit organizations that serve those most in need of legal assistance or court intervention. First, this Article discusses the changing dynamics in the market for legal talent that has led to an increased need to attract new talent and a decline in the ability to do so. These changes include the loss of current legal talent caused by voluntary resignation, retirement, and a growing decline in interest in traditional aspects of the legal profession. Next, this Article discusses the effect a lack of available legal talent has on providing representation for those in need of legal services from both private firms and public interest/non-profit organizations. To expose the need for changes in hiring attitudes and practices, this Article examines the current attitudes and traditional practices in the hiring process. This will lead to a discussion regarding what legal employers need to know about the traits and characteristics of young lawyers, namely those in the Gen Z cohort. Using this information as a base, the Article provides legal employers with a view of the hiring process from the candidate’s perspective, focusing on what these individuals will be looking for in their employer. Finally, this Article suggests a starting point for making necessary changes in the hiring process in order to successfully attract legal talent. It is a task vital to the sustainability and stability of any legal organization and the ability to serve the changing and growing legal needs of the public

    Measuring the Rapidly Increasing Use of Artificial Intelligence in Legal Scholarship

    The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) has had a profound impact on nearly every industry, including legal academia. As AI-driven tools like ChatGPT become more prevalent, they raise critical questions about authorship, academic integrity, and the evolving nature of legal writing. While AI offers promising benefits—such as improved efficiency in research, drafting, and analysis—it also presents ethical dilemmas related to originality, bias, and the potential homogenization of legal discourse. One of the challenges in assessing AI’s influence on legal scholarship is the difficulty of identifying AI-generated content. Traditional plagiarism-detection methods are often inadequate, as AI does not merely copy existing text but generates novel outputs based on probabilistic language modeling. This first-of-its-kind study uses the existence of an AI idiosyncrasy to measure the use of AI in legal scholarship. This provides the first-ever empirical evidence of a sharp increase in the use of AI in legal scholarship, thus raising pressing questions about the proper role of AI in shaping legal scholarship and the practice of law. By applying a novel framework to highlight the rapidly evolving challenges at the intersection of AI and legal academia, this Essay will hopefully spark future debate on the careful balance in this area
