    Slashed: Insect Gazes, Point-of-View Perspectives, and the Rise of a Post/Human Vision in the Italian giallo

    Establishing an ecology of Italian horror by looking at Mario Bava’s A Bay of Blood (1971) and Dario Argento’s Phenomena (1985)—both of which feature insects’ first-“person” perspective shots, this paper traces the formation and subsequent development of a gaze in these films, one that disrupts the understanding of this gaze as human. From thematic concerns like ecology, entomology, and an emphasis on an anti-anthropomorphic gaze, we can begin to trace a resonance between the two films and their desire to expand vision. Examining early articulations of a posthumanist sensibility and vision in these films, this paper surveys the complex entanglements between Italian formulations of horror and violence, proposing the concept of an ‘insect gaze’ as a mediated gaze before exploring the terror, and possibilities, it engenders. Separated by more than a decade, the films present non-human gazes that trigger deep-seated anxieties specific to their historical context

    Lucky, Liz, and the General Hospital Archives: Archival Processes and Efforts in Soap Opera Fan Spaces

    The world of the soap opera is centred around its fans, primarily their memories and the in-universe history they take pride and care in knowing and understanding. Using a piece of archival audiovisual (AV) footage from the ABC soap opera General Hospital, I discuss how the footage is used to engage and appeal to fans, who act as archivists, historians, and critics of the program. Using archival and library and information science (LIS) papers, I then situate the fan within these roles and as information keepers, drawing on the work of Baym (2000), Wilson (2012), Steuer (2019), Levine (2021) and Price and Robinson (2016). The existing literature does not address data loss, specifically in terms of fans as information sources and their archival practices on social media, which are ephemeral. I attempt to highlight this gap by exemplifying the important role that fans hold in fan spaces. I then revisit the archival clip and use a fan-moderated archive further explaining the fan’s important role as an information keeper and their significance in keeping the soap’s history alive. My personal response to the archival material functions as a case study in fan information behaviours, and addresses the invaluable power of fan labour. I conclude by acknowledging how the trend of tribute episodes that memorialize performers and the characters they portrayed signals a further interest in and importance of archival material to communicate and honour the achievements and history of the program

    This bibliographical exploration begins with a particularly colourful and experimental edition of a notable mathematics textbook published in the mid-19th century, and compares it with several later editions. Connecting historical, technical, design and pedagogical perspectives, and drawing on aspects of interface theory, this paper considers how a once-maligned reconceptualization of a fundamental mathematics text has come to be understood as an early example of translating abstract knowledge from one form into another (in this case, from linguistic to visual), so as to better serve alternative learning styles. It also examines how that forward-thinking spirit has been carried through into a digitally-remediated form

    Indigenous Approaches to Knowledge Translation: Lessons Learned from the First Indigenous Wellbeing Gathering Conference

    Indigenous knowledge is at the heart of identity, culture, and wellbeing for Indigenous Peoples, and knowledge transmission is fundamental to sustaining a sense of belonging, connection to community, and upholding Indigenous Peoples inherent rights and sovereignties. However, colonial and Eurocentric ideologies have long disrupted this knowledge transmission, impeding self-determination and aiming to assimilate and control Indigenous Peoples, cultures, and identities. The inaugural Indigenous Wellbeing Gathering Conference hosted by the Urban Indigenous Wellbeing Collective on the traditional territory of the Syilx Okanagan Nation, sought to create a responsive and inclusive space for the sharing and revitalization of Indigenous knowledge systems. Grounded in reciprocity and relationality, the conference centred Indigenous-led pathways of wellbeing, with the aim of bringing together academic and Indigenous community-led wellbeing research and practices. This paper describes the journey of organizing the conference, offering insights into Indigenous approaches to knowledge translation within health research contexts. Emerging from the experience of organizing the gathering, we share an Indigenous Wellbeing Research Knowledge Translation Framework, which emphasizes iterative, community-engaged processes, valuing Indigenous knowledge systems alongside research and wellbeing practitioner knowledges. This framework aims to advance health equity, Indigenous human rights, and self-determination by centering Indigenous knowledge systems and practices. The conference\u27s success highlights the importance of culturally relevant, community-led initiatives in promoting Indigenous wellbeing

    EVIDENCE-BASED RECOMMENDATION OF A POWERED KNEE FOR TRANSFEMORAL BONE-ANCHORED PROSTHESES: A CROSS-SECTIONAL STUDY

    BACKGROUND: A transfemoral bone-anchored prosthesis (TF-BAP) can be fitted with non-microprocessor-controlled knees (N-MPKs), or with microprocessor-controlled knees, which can be passive (P-MPKs) or active (A-MPKs). The next generation of A-MPKs, including powered knees, is emerging. The understanding of the loading applied on TF-BAP fitted with these A-MPKs is limited. OBJECTIVE: This cross-sectional study aimed to characterize the load applied on instrumented TF-BAP fitted with an A-MPK (Power Knee, Össur, Iceland) during standardized daily activities. Furthermore, some load characteristics applied during walking were compared with TF-BAP fitted with N-MPK and P-MPK reported in the literature using similar approach. METHODOLOGY: Thirteen males fitted with a transfemoral press-fit osseointegrated implant participated in this study between 2021 and 2022. Forces and moments applied on the instrumented TF-BAP, fitted with a Power Knee (PKA01) and Pro-Flex (LP, XC) or Balance S feet (ÖSSUR, Iceland), were measured wirelessly using an iPecsLab (RTC Electronics, USA) during walking, ascending and descending ramp and stairs. We followed a 28-step process to characterize the loading pattern considering spatiotemporal gaits variables as well as loading boundaries and extrema. FINDINGS: Overall, 1,327 steps were analyzed. The cadence ranged between 34 ± 6 and 49 ± 13 strides/min. The maximum forces and moments recorded on the long, anteroposterior and mediolateral axes of the transducer were 1,258 N, 331 N and 234 N as well as 19 Nm, 74 Nm and 91 Nm, respectively. CONCLUSION: The Power Knee, combined with Pro-Flex or Balance S feet, may improve participants’ capacity to ambulate. Comparations with reference values indicated that transitions from N-MPKs or P-MPKs to the Power Knee are considered safe and likely to improve efficiency. This study contributed to evidence-based recommendations of TF-BAP fitted with powered knees. Hopefully, this work will advance clinical practice guidelines for the growing population choosing bionic solutions. Layman\u27s Abstract Advanced prosthetic knees play a key role in achieving rehabilitation success when a bionic limb is attached directly to the remaining bone in people with lower limb loss. The next generation of bionic knees, called powered knees, is emerging. Indeed, they become more frequently prescribed for individuals fitted with implant inserted into their bone. However, more scientific evidence is required to confirm the safety and efficacy of these knees before they can be accepted as the standard of care. Consequently, this study examined the forces applied between a powered knee and the implant in the residual bone, measured directly using a wireless device embedded in the prosthesis. Thirteen individuals with transfemoral amputations participated in the study between 2021 and 2022. The mechanical constraint was directly measured using a wireless device embedded into the prosthesis. The outcomes were benchmark against reference data provided in the literature. The outcomes of this study confirmed that the newly developed component, Power Knee, is both safe and potentially effective in restoring gait for users of bionic limbs. This work also improves standard methods for evaluating how prosthetic components mechanically affect the implant-bone interface in direct skeletal attachment of bionic limbs. Overall, this work will, hopefully, contribute to the development of clinical practice guidelines for the rehabilitation of the growing population choosing bionic solutions.
