An Algorithm and Computation to Verify Legendre\u27s Conjecture up 7 · 10\u3csup\u3e13\u3c/sup\u3e
We state a general purpose algorithm for quickly finding primes in evenly divided sub-intervals. Legendre’s conjecture claims that for every positive integer n, there exists a prime between n2 and (n + 1)2. Oppermann’s conjecture subsumes Legendre’s conjecture by claiming there are primes between n2 and n(n + 1) and also between n(n + 1) and (n + 1)2. Using Cramér’s conjecture as the basis for a heuristic run-time analysis, we show that our algorithm can verify Oppermann’s conjecture, and hence also Legendre’s conjecture, for all n ≤ N in time O(N log N log log N) and space NO(1/ log log N) . We implemented a parallel version of our algorithm and improved the empirical verification of Oppermann’s conjecture from the previous N = 2 · 109 up to N = 7.05 · 1013 \u3e 246, so we were finding 27 digit primes. The computation ran for about half a year on each of two platforms: four Intel Xeon Phi 7210 processors using a total of 256 cores, and a 192-core cluster of Intel Xeon E5-2630 2.3GHz processors
Exploring the landscape of pharmacist-led hormonal contraceptive counseling by Indiana pharmacists
Indiana pharmacists were authorized to prescribe birth control in 2023. An over-the-counter birth control pill was approved in 2024. It is imperative to understand and address pharmacist comfort when counseling on these medications. The purpose of this research project is to understand pharmacist confidence in counseling on hormonal birth control and identify barriers to hormonal contraceptive counseling in pharmacies in Indiana. An 18-question survey was sent to all members of the Indiana Pharmacist Association listserv. Pharmacists were invited to participate in the survey. This study was approved by the Butler University Institutional Review Board. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data. Twenty-two pharmacists responded to this survey; 81.8% were women and 68.1% practiced in a community pharmacy setting. The average time since graduation was 16.6 years. Over two-thirds (68.2%) of pharmacists surveyed currently counsel. Of those who currently counsel, the majority (60%) counsel at least once a month. When all participants were asked, 77.3% responded that they felt very confident or confident counseling on the correct form of birth control. Only 45.5% felt very confident or confident counseling on over-the-counter birth control. The most common barrier to counseling was time constraints, listed by 50% of people. The majority of pharmacists in this study feel confident counseling on birth control. However, additional resources may need to be provided for over-the-counter birth control
Synthesis and characterization of 3,5 trifluoromethyl Tpm with a metal carbonyl complex
Tris(pyrazolyl)methane (Tpm) ligands have a central carbon with 3 pyrazole rings attached. These were discovered in 1970 and have since been synthesized with many substituents on the rings. Based on the parent structure, my goal was to synthesize a fluorinated Tpm derivative. By adapting existing procedures, I have synthesized a Tpm derivative with trifluorinated methyl groups in the 3 and 5 positions of the pyrazole ring. The fluorinated ligand is expected to be electron withdrawing and exhibit interesting chemistry when bound to a metal center. Future directions of the project will be discussed
Gaslight, Gateway, Girlboss: The Empowering Possibilities of Bimbo Feminism
During the COVID-19 pandemic, a new trend arose from the social media platform TikTok called Bimbo Feminism. Bimbo Feminism is marked by an authentic embrace of femininity and the democratization of knowledge through generational slang. Through the explanation and analysis of Bimbo Feminism’s three spearheads, Chrissy Chlapecka, Nikita Redkar, and Scene Queen, this thesis defines Bimbo Feminism and explains its possibilities as a gateway feminism. Through its position on TikTok, Bimbo Feminism is able to bring new people into the world of activism. However, Bimbo Feminism must address its internal issues before it can be used as a catalyst for growth, including a lack of diverging identities and acknowledgement of its intellectual ancestors. Bimbo Feminism has the potential to be a powerful reclamation and reimagining of hyper-femininity without the constraint of patriarchal expectations
Examining How Internally and Externally Motivated Individuals Choose When, How, and Why to Confront Racial Prejudice
Experiencing racism is associated with negative outcomes, including obesity and poor mental health (Berger & Sarnyai, 2015). Therefore, exploring strategies like interpersonal confrontation, which has been shown to reduce prejudice, is essential (Czopp et al., 2006; Paluck & Green, 2009). We examined what more internally (affected by personal values) and externally motivated (affected by social reward) people consider when deciding when confronting racism. White participants (n = 270) viewed hypothetical scenarios with a racist remark or non-racist remark. They decided whether to confront these scenarios and indicated their motivations, reasonings, and methods. Results showed that more internally and externally motivated individuals perceived and confronted prejudice when it was present, but those higher in external motivations also perceived prejudice and confronted in nonprejudiced situations. Additionally, more internally motivated individuals considered personal responsibility (personal obligation to confront) and agency (the ability to confront) when they chose and failed to confront racism, and they considered prejudice malleability (viewing prejudice as minimizable through confrontation) when confronting racism. Alternatively, more externally motivated individuals considered social reward (social benefit for confrontation) and prejudice malleability in both decisions, and they considered agency when they failed to confront racism. Higher levels of both motivations were linked to greater perceived effectiveness of activism and confrontation strategies, with different correlations possibly reflecting unique evaluation factors. Overall, this study helped us learn about when, how, and why people choose to confront racism based upon the source of their motivation
