The Impact of Study Abroad as it Relates to Business Students\u27 Career Paths
Business schools in the United States are continuously working to provide students with real-world experiences which will help them discern, and prepare for, their future careers. As globalization continues to increase the interconnectedness of the world, and of the companies within it, it is increasingly important that business students are globally aware and culturally competent. The aim of this study is to demonstrate that studying abroad enables business students to discern and prepare for their future careers. To demonstrate this, students and graduates of Butler University’s Lacy School of Business, with graduation years between 2012 and 2022, were surveyed. Those who previously studied abroad were part of the experimental group, and those who did not study abroad were part of the control group. It was found that business students who studied abroad are more likely to work internationally, more prepared for the workforce and more confident in their ability to obtain jobs, and more comfortable networking with colleagues in the business world than business students who did not study abroad. These findings emphasize the importance that business schools should be placing on their students’ study abroad experiences
The Impact of Dance on Physical, Intellectual, and Social Aspects of College Life
This study aimed to examine the physical, intellectual, and social impacts of dance on collegiate life. Members of the Butler University Dance Team were surveyed, and 3 members were interviewed in order to gain insight into how they perceived dance has impacted various aspects of their college life. Results showed that increased physical activity levels, academic motivation from teammates and coaching staff, as well as a positive relationship with teammates were positive aspects that dance team participants added to their college experience. Negatively, results showed lack of time for proper warm up, intense time commitments, and pressure to maintain a specific body image to be negative aspects of dance team participation in college. This study thus gave insight into a multitude of factors, both positive and negative, that come with dance participation at the collegiate level
An Examination of the Statistics and Risk Management Concepts Behind the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) of 2010
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) is the overarching federal law that has impacted the intricacies of the health insurance market for more than a decade. Using the supervised learning method of multiple linear regression, the relationship between the medical loss ratio rebates and predictor variables such as the state, health insurance market, and the number of insurance companies owing rebates will be analyzed, along with the actuarial value of metal tiers and geographic rating area factors in terms of their relationship to the insurance premium for a standard family of four, defined as a forty-year-old couple with two children. Moreover, cluster analysis will be used to analyze any and all phenomena discovered by looking at which data points are assigned to specific clusters based on shared attributes. All datasets are from the years 2014 through 2020, as 2014 was when the PPACA went into effect and 2020 is the latest year for which data is available
Stress Effects on Hydrogen Peroxide Defense Response of Physcomitrella patens and Mnium cuspidatum
This project investigated the importance of stresses and the immune system response of hydrogen peroxide formation within the model system Physcomitrella patens, as well as in Mnium cuspidatum. I examined the role of two hormones, abscisic acid and jasmonic acid, along with the role that drought-like conditions play in the specified defense response of hydrogen peroxide production. I hypothesized that abscisic acid would act as an antagonist and reduce hydrogen peroxide production, jasmonic acid would act as an amplifier to increase hydrogen peroxide production and increasing the sodium concentration of the liquid treatment would also act as an antagonist. These interactions are significant to the field of Bryology as they have not been prevalent in the literature. At the conclusion of this research, it was determined that 20-minute exposure to liquid treatments of salicylic acid showed an observed upward trend in hydrogen peroxide production. In addition, abscisic acid may act as an antagonist toward SA production as reduced level of hydrogen peroxide in the presence of both hormones were found. Jasmonic acid was not tested due to lack of time and resources. Data regarding NaCl effect on H2O2 production was inconclusive, and thus further research is necessary to determine the potential interaction. These results provide further insight to how the immune systems of archaic, non-vascular plants operate, which may give further insight to the mechanisms within more modern and vascular plants, leading to potential advances in the agricultural field. Furthermore, the results provide insight into the conserved immune responses and may contribute to the collective understanding of plant evolution
Using the edTPA as a Model for Teacher Research and Reflective Practice: An Honors Thesis
Teacher research engages educators in inquiry to enhance their practice, initiate evidence-based change in their classroom and become more reflective practitioners in order to best support the learning of their students’ individual strengths and needs. The edTPA is a national teaching performance assessment that determines teachers’ effective practices as they are on the cusp of entering the educational profession. Aspiring teachers must demonstrate that they are prepared to enter the educational profession with the skills and knowledge needed to help each of their individual students learn. The edTPA was completed and submitted during the high school student teaching clinical experience, then scored by national Pearson edTPA Mathematics Content scorers based on fifteen subject-specific rubrics. The submission score was reviewed and analyzed through the perspective of the next generation of aspiring teachers who will complete the edTPA and by cross-referencing curriculum in the Butler University teaching preparation program. What was found was that students in the middle/secondary education program are prepared to engage in the cycle of planning, instructing and assessing student work in order to use data to make teaching decisions for student-centered instruction over the course of their four years. The active participation in teacher research such as the edTPA develops and strengthens aspiring or novice teachers’ work towards becoming a reflective practitioner. New teachers continue to become purposeful educators by supporting their students’ strengths and needs in lessons, engaging students in meaningful learning experiences, analyzing student progress or growth, and modifying future instruction to provide more effective instruction
Is The Ivory Tower Made of Glass?: Examining Work Experiences of Women Faculty at Butler University
The guiding research question for this study is: “What are the structural, cultural, and situational factors that affect women faculty’s experience at Butler University?” While this project focuses broadly on women as an identifying group, it also requires attention to the intersectionality of individuals’ experience as issues such as race, ethnicity, sexual orientation and disabilities are also factors shaping women’s experiences. The information from this study draws attention to the experiences that women faculty have related to their gender and potentially facilitate change starting at Butler University. This paper will discuss the experiences of women faculty at Butler University regarding their gender. It will specifically talk about the gendered issues of tenure, equality of pay, difference in types of work, and familial obligations as these seem to be the most prominent findings from research at Butler
Bird\u27s Eye View: The Construction of Identity and Community on Social Media among Cirque du Soleil Performers
Although the circus has been around for hundreds of years, it is still a large part of the entertainment industry that draws substantial crowds and interest. Cirque du Soleil— a Québécois contemporary circus— attracts a lot of attention because of its aerial and acrobatic performances. Fans can experience the circus in person at a performance, but they can also interact online by watching performers on social media. TikTok— a social media platform where creators share videos up to three minutes in length— is a great place for Cirque du Soleil performers to gain a new audience and interact with their fans. In this research, I sought to answer the following questions: How are Cirque du Soleil performers negotiating their self-identity on TikTok? What are the shared values of the Cirque du Soleil community on TikTok? How do the interactions between Cirque du Soleil performers and their followers further shape their community? Previous research focuses on why individuals join Cirque du Soleil but has done little to evaluate how performers construct a shared community ethos while expressing themselves individually. This research will do both within the context of interactions with their large fan base on social media
Size Regulation within the Germline of the Developing Egg Chamber
The relationship between the size of a cell and the size of its intracellular structures must be precisely regulated for proper development and functioning of the mature organism; however, the mechanisms that establish and maintain this relationship are not known. Much of the work on organelle size scaling has focused on individual cells or organelles, with some looking at how size scaling is maintained during development. However, it is not known whether the size of multiple organelles is coordinately regulated, and how cell size and organelle size are regulated within a syncytium or group of connected cells. Because many cell types exist within a syncytium, understanding size scaling in this context is important. We have used the developing fruit fly egg chamber as a model system to study the size relationship between multiple structures within the germline syncytium throughout oogenesis. The developing egg chamber contains a cluster of 16 germ cells connected by intercellular bridges, or ring canals. It has been observed that the size of the germline ring canals exhibits spatial variation with the smallest ring canals at the anterior of the egg chamber and the largest ring canals at the posterior near the oocyte. Recent work has also confirmed that nurse cells and their nuclei show a similar size distribution within the germline. Therefore, it is interesting to consider whether the size of these structures may be coordinately regulated, and whether altering the size of one structure (either throughout the germline or clonally) would impact the size of the other structure. We have used a combination of RNAi (Pendulin, Dacapo, or Ctf4), overexpression (Pendulin) and mosaic analysis (myc and arpC1) to try to alter either nuclear size or ring canal size in some or all cells within the germline. We used Fiji to measure the diameter of the ring canals, the size of the nurse cell nuclei (which has been used as a proxy for cell size), and the overall dimensions of the egg chamber. Preliminary data suggest that altering nuclear size within the entire germline does impact ring canal size, and that in mosaic tissue, there is typically a correlation between cell size, nuclear size, and ring canal size. In the future, we hope to further explore whether the size of these structures is coordinately regulated, and if so, to identify the underlying mechanisms that are involved
Inducing Alternative Forms of Cell Death in Multidrug Resistant Ovarian Cancer
Ovarian cancer remains the deadliest gynecological cancer for women today. In 2021, an estimated 21,410 new cases of ovarian cancer were diagnosed in the US, and approximately 13,770 of these women will not survive the disease[2]. This malignancy’s low survival rate is attributed to late diagnoses, as well as the cancer’s tendency to recur after chemotherapy treatment due to acquired drug resistance. The standard of care for this disease includes surgery and chemotherapy. One of the commonly used chemotherapeutic drugs is cisplatin, which works by inducing a programmed form of cell death known as apoptosis. However, many ovarian cancer tumors develop cisplatin drug resistance. Therefore, inducing alternate forms of cell death in these cancer cells is being considered for new treatment options. Erastin is a novel drug thought to induce ferroptosis, an iron-dependent method of cell death[6]. The objective of this research was to determine if erastin induced cellular death via ferroptosis in ovarian cancer cells, and further, if using erastin with cisplatin could sensitize cisplatin resistant cells to ferroptosis. The high grade serous ovarian carcinoma cell line, OVCAR-3, was used for this research. OVCAR-3 is a cisplastin drug resistant cell line that is often used as an in vitro model of HGSOC and was derived from a 60-year-old patient with metastatic cancer. Cells were treated with cisplatin, erastin, and in combination to test the drug’s efficacy at inducing cellular death. Ferredoxin, an agent that inhibits ferroptosis, was used as a control. MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) cell proliferation assays were used to determine the effects of different treatments on OVCAR-3 cells. Results from these experiments suggest that erastin is a potential therapeutic agent in the treatment of cisplatin drug resistant HGSOC. Using erastin in combination with cisplatin may improve patient outcomes, in addition to lowering the therapeutic dose of cisplatin in order to minimize adverse effects that are associated with this medication. Hence, ferroptosis is an alternative form of cell death for HGSOC that can be further exploited to develop innovative treatment regimens for patients with ovarian cancer. 2. American Cancer Society.
