Beauty and the (Chemical) Beast
Cosmetics and personal care products (PCPs) are prominent in the daily lives of consumers. Unfortunately, there is a long history of toxic chemicals in these products that have caused serious adverse effects. As a result, the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act (FD&C) was created to help identify ingredients with safety concerns; this remains the primary source of regulation for cosmetics and PCPs today. No additional requirement exists for federal review of ingredients or adverse event reporting. As a result, questionable ingredients with potential safety issues can still be found in products. With these regulatory deficits, some companies have taken steps to remove unsafe chemicals from their products and promote ‘cleaner’ ones. In addition, resources are available such as the Skin Keep Cosmetics Database, that review ingredients and classify their hazard risk. Knowing the limited regulation of cosmetic and PCPs, it is important for consumers to be knowledgeable about ingredients that may be unsafe or carry risks
Honey: The Sweet Truth
Honey is a natural food that is packed with vitamins, minerals, enzymes, proteins, organic acids, and many other biologically active compounds. Its exact components may vary based on the unique collection of flowers and plants that honeybees pollinate. The nutrient dense quality of honey has different health benefits. People all around the world are currently suffering from chronic illnesses such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia at unprecedented rates. When patients experience a combination of these disease states, it is known as metabolic syndrome (MetS). MetS is correlated with urbanization in developing countries, with sedentary lifestyle and poor diet as the biggest risk factors. Studies have shown that honey is able to help manage and reverse all four disease states that make up MetS. While the exact mechanisms are still being investigated, honey’s positive health effects may suggest that it could play a role in helping patients manage and ultimately reverse these chronic diseases

Robert Hall Merrill: An American Engineer in China
Presented at the 2023 Archival Kismet Conference Thinking About Stuff, this presentation explores historical documents found in the Robert H. Merrill papers in the Grand Valley State University Special Collections and University Archives.
In 1920, Robert Hall Merrill, a young civil engineer from Grand Rapids, Michigan, traveled to China to serve as Assistant Principle Engineer on a reconstruction project of a portion of the Grand Canal. The Grand Canal is the longest and oldest canal system in the world. Merrill\u27s work produced a comprehensive survey report of the Grand Canal construction area near the Yellow River. The report contains numerous maps and charts detailing the area, it\u27s topography, soil quality, water levels, rainfall totals, and a variety of other aspects impacting the reconstruction. Accompanying this extensive report is a file of correspondence between Merrill and other project engineers regarding the work taking place
Prioritization Matrices for Digital Preservation Planning
Appraisal strategies can be leveraged to inform decision-making around digital preservation planning, lending curatorial oversight to an area that is often perceived as highly technical. A prioritization matrix is a project management tool to help you narrow down multiple project or task options, and identify the highest-priority areas. They facilitate decision making, are customizable, and easy to read. This poster presentation explores the prioritization matrix methodology used by GVSU Special Collections & University Archives in digital preservation planning
