Bleeding Heart
WHY THIS SUBJECT? I chose Women\u27s Liberation because as a young individual artist, I was able to resonate so much with past women artists/activists who have put themselves out there only to be rejected and judged by humanity
WHAT SHOULD WE KNOW? I want it to be known that my purpose for creating this piece was to signify my bleeding heart for humanity and how at the end of the day, there is no progress made, not only for women\u27s right\u27s but for so many other issues plaguing this world.
WHAT WAS YOUR TECHNIQUE/PROCESS? For this piece I started with a base of cardboard and built up the female body form. And then added tissue paper over the cardboard for texture in the dress. And in addition to that I added black fabric over top of that to make it seem as though you mourn for humanity. For the eyes I simply used colored pencil and then used hot glue to make the tears streaming from her eyes. I wanted the eyes to be the center of attention because I firmly believe that eye\u27s are the window to the soul so instead of making her who head to complete the poster, I wanted to bring her eyes to the forefront.https://digitalcommons.colum.edu/capturingprotest/1115/thumbnail.jp
Community
WHY THIS SUBJECT? I chose this subject because of how important it is be a part of your community and try and make a difference in the lives of people around you. For me I felt it is important for people no matter what background, or culture you are in. We can all come together and make each others lives the best it can be.
WHAT SHOULD WE KNOW? The theme of my poster is based on community. It was inspired by the Hands Across America Charity Event organized on May 25th, 1986.
WHAT WAS YOUR TECHNIQUE/PROCESS? I did a digital drawing of it using Ibis Paint X drawing the characters in a more chibi state.https://digitalcommons.colum.edu/capturingprotest/1108/thumbnail.jp
GO NATURAL
WHY THIS SUBJECT? I personally have natural hair and think that all black people should be able to embrace their natural hair texture.
WHAT SHOULD WE KNOW? Angela Davis was a major advocate for the natural hair movement in the 1960s and 1970s.
WHAT WAS YOUR TECHNIQUE/PROCESS? Digital, Adobe Lightroomhttps://digitalcommons.colum.edu/capturingprotest/1107/thumbnail.jp
Roll a D20 To Be Seen as Equal
WHY THIS SUBJECT? Focusing on gender discrimination, i went to a place of my life that it is much more common to be misogynistic and discriminatory against women and non-cis people. The TTRPG community and specifically the D&D community is known for catering towards cis men for pretty much the majority of its\u27 creation.
WHAT SHOULD WE KNOW? The phrase roll a d20 alludes to the dice rolled when playing the game itself, using a 20-sided die to throw your luck in hopes of getting the highest number possible (20). Rolling a d20 to be seen as equal gives the meaning that it is difficult to achieve that, even with the same knowledge as a man.
WHAT WAS YOUR TECHNIQUE/PROCESS? I used illustrator and traced various free transparent designs from the internet. I created a color scheme that was more feminine and then added text to each visible side of the traced dice. I inverted the colors so there was more variety with the dice in the background and kept an empty space of a silhouette of a woman to resemble the discrimination. The font I used for the text is a similar font to the official D&D website, just tying in more aspects of the game.https://digitalcommons.colum.edu/capturingprotest/1109/thumbnail.jp
Working Class Zombies
WHY THIS SUBJECT? I am someone who hates the idea of working jobs I don\u27t enjoy and centering it for my life. I think normalizing the fact that people only can live their lives on the weekends and showing off the fact that they work two jobs or working all the time is awful because it takes away these people individuality and just makes them another employee. I understand that people have to survive but that\u27s exactly the problem. These big companies work their employees for scraps while they do little and live constantly. We are all trying to live our lives and I think that we should have jobs that give us freedom to live as well instead of making that job the center of our lives. Too many people give up on their dreams and just sit at jobs making money but their wellbeing is put at risk.
WHAT SHOULD WE KNOW ABOUT THE WORK? It\u27s something I\u27m very passionate about.
WHAT WAS YOUR PROCESS? I opened up a pinterest board, Opened up some of my own finished work and drew out random sketches. This is a digital piece.https://digitalcommons.colum.edu/capturingprotest/1028/thumbnail.jp
Social Misinformation
WHY THIS SUBJECT? I felt Misinformation was an extremley important issue because it leads to many problems that affect so many people.
WHAT SHOULD WE KNOW ABOUT THE WORK? I made the poster in the style of a Facebook post bringing up well known false information that was spread by influential people that should not have been spread.
WHAT WAS YOUR PROCESS? I used photoshop to create a post that has public tweets and news articles, and common terms used by people who spread misinformation. I then recreated what a typical Facebook post on Facebook looks like an added the first image to look like a post.https://digitalcommons.colum.edu/capturingprotest/1037/thumbnail.jp
