Wanted Poster-Damon Hininger
WHY THIS SUBJECT? I chose this subject because the fact that so many prisons in the US are privately owned and for profit is unknown, or at least under the radar. The only way that this will change is by talking about it and bringing awareness to it.
WHAT SHOULD WE KNOW ABOUT THE WORK? I put the CEO of Corecivic on the wanted poster because I wanted to draw attention to the fact that even though what he is doing is so wrong, it is completely legal-- and taxpayer funded.
WHAT WAS YOUR PROCESS? I chose to use the wanted poster style so that the viewer would automatically assume that the man seen was guilty, even before seeing what he did. I intentionally didn\u27t put very much information on the poster because I wanted to give enough to catch the viewer\u27s eye, but still make them want to know more.https://digitalcommons.colum.edu/capturingprotest/1076/thumbnail.jp

End the Stigma
WHY THIS SUBJECT? Mental Health
WHAT SHOULD WE KNOW ABOUT THE WORK? I decided to use a handwritten type, and actually ended up creating several handwritten typefaces. I chose a simple color palette of bright colors against a dark teal background to really make them pop. The image I chose is representative of a healing and growing brain, resembling a seed because it is sprouting flowers. One thing that makes this poster special to me and that should be noted is that each phrase on the poster was written by someone who has become a significant member in my own support group/system. These people include my boyfriend, my therapist, and some really good friends. I think it is crucial to have a good strong support system when learning to cope with your mental disorders, as I have learned.
WHAT WAS YOUR PROCESS? I started off by using a typeface called Noteworthy, but as I got more into the design process, I realized that it would be more effective to use actual hand written type in order to give off the friendly and positive vibesI was aiming for. I asked some people to write out a phrase of my choice, take a picture and send it back to me. From there, I brought it into a software program called ProCreate and I traced their writing using a pen stroke called Studio Pen. Afterwards, I applied my color palette to each phrase and placed it on my poster. The graphic in the center is inspired by something I have often seen in other mental health posters. I wanted to design something that represented healthy growth and healing, and what better than a brain sprouting flowers.https://digitalcommons.colum.edu/capturingprotest/1048/thumbnail.jp

Problem Solved
WHY THIS SUBJECT? I wanted to make people aware of what was going on in the mexican-american border when it comes to the mistreatment undocumented people faced at the beginning of the pandemic.
WHAT SHOULD WE KNOW ABOUT THE WORK? It is a graphic piece that should be only visible to those who can handle the topic. It is an exaggeration of the events that were happening at the time so it should not be taken literary.
WHAT WAS YOUR PROCESS? The piece is digital using Procreate which is an app available in the ios app store. I used the different brushes, brush sizes, and blending techniques to come to the final look of the piece.https://digitalcommons.colum.edu/capturingprotest/1025/thumbnail.jp
Other Side of the Screen 1
WHAT THIS SUBJECT? I chose to portray the difficulties that both teachers and students are facing right now during the pandemic, because I\u27ve seen both nearly firsthand, being a student, and also seeing my mother, who is a teacher, struggle with bringing work home and the difficulties that come with educating and learning in a pandemic.
WHAT SHOULD WE KNOW ABOUT THE WORK? Each of the three images has a parallel issue on both sides. In image 3, for example, both the teacher on the left and the student on the right are having issues getting work done, while also balancing responsibilities. I chose to include the same bold message in each image to connect the pieces, and also to boldly and simply state my message, which is to just support each other right now, but also, after the pandemic as well.
WHAT WAS YOUR PROCESS? I made some initial sketches of my idea, and then made a digital mock-up as well before creating the final pieces. I drew them digitally on my computer, keeping the basic color scheme and format, but changing the figures, scenes and focus for each image.https://digitalcommons.colum.edu/capturingprotest/1032/thumbnail.jp
Economic Freedom From a System Prioritizing Some
WHY THIS SUBJECT? While economics have definitely been evolving in the past few years, there\u27s a lot more work that needs to be done, and a unbiased and truly public ledger is the best choice of making sure individuals who are systemically discriminated against, Bitcoin has played a huge role in getting unbanked individuals a chance to find financial freedom.
WHAT SHOULD WE KNOW? Suited Pig or the Bank hording cash in a dangerous, caveman like, and systemically bias environment. While a group of different types is able to find freedom in something that\u27s previously only been available for a selected few. A public currency, not governed by a single entity and unable to be racist or picky on who gets access to a system that can help build wealth.
WHAT WAS YOUR TECHNIQUE/PROCESS? Creating a mix of gradient and solids, to create a cartoon design inside of illustrator, starting off with an idea, sketching it onto paper, then visualizing it within the computer was my way of creating a poster that was artistic and able to include hidden meaning if you examine the art closely.https://digitalcommons.colum.edu/capturingprotest/1116/thumbnail.jp
A History of Spilled Blood
WHY THIS SUBJECT? Historical Racial Violence targeting African-Americans
WHAT SHOULD WE KNOW? From their arrival on this continent, African-American history has been splattered in blood, from top to bottom, from beginning to present. This poster is an acknowledgment of the racial violence that litters American history. The dates that fill the wall are significant years in the history of racial violence against black people in America; these dates, in some places, become illegible from blood, and the dates blend together. The hunched figure is upside down chiefly to create tension and unease. In a position that could depict grief, pain, or weakness. I was inspired by the consistent wall art we had seen in this class to use a concrete backdrop. Texture, like the wall, emphasizes the components of the image because of the practical color scheme. The dates are secondary; they provide additional texture and force the viewer to acknowledge time, history, and momentum. I wanted this image to stand out at a distance, as a thumbnail, and to people who only see it for a brief moment. I have a high contrast visual, with minimal text, the concept of history is pushed and grasped by the audience just by seeing sequences of 4 consecutive numbers. The image tells the viewer the years pertain to violence and racial hate. I wanted an image with staying power in the viewer; the image should evoke dread, anxiety, and repulsion. Providing a visual to the violence seemed like the answer. Dried blood allowed me to maximize texture and minimize the amount of actual depicted violence. I am happy with my final product. I hope that is some way it makes an impact..

The Ones who Sought for Freedom
WHY THIS SUBJECT? I wanted to focus on Freedom and Equality. I decided to focus on this because freedom is a state in which people have the ability to pursue happiness without the imposition of needless external constraints. I decided to keep my poster simple but have the word freedom to be the only text there because everyone wants to pursue something that makes them happy but feel constrained because of what society believes.
WHAT SHOULD WE KNOW? I used BFK Rives paper and Sakura pens to make this poster
