On 16 March 1761 Padre Antonio Soler wrote a letter to the Duke of Medina Sidonia asking politely for the return of a gift of a «Book of Harpsichord Music. Thus began a twelve-year correspondence between Soler (22 letters) and the duke. Central to the correspondence was the young Catalan harpsichordist, Pedro Santamant (b. 1752), who was in the service of the duke («I have seen him perform wonders on the harpsichord»). At the duke's request. Soler agreed to teach Santamant composition at El Escorial. The correspondence ended with Soler angrily demanding the return of some sonatas from «a Book of 40 Sonatas.» The correspondence gives us a «glimpse of Soler's personal and musical character.» In addition to providing new data for Soler's biography, it reveals the didactic purpose for some of his sonatas, as well as information on eighteenth-century Spanish harpsichords. Perhaps it will also give us a better understanding of Soler's music.

This paper mainly deals with Isaac Albéniz' orchestral music (1860-1909), often partially reviled in favor of his piano music, after Manuscript 984 from the "Biblioteca de Cataluya" (Barcelona coming to light, and having its origin in the musician's family legacy. The composer born in Camprodon appears here located in the context of the Catalan Modernism at the change of the century who is then partially influenced by the first waves of Wagnerism, from the interpretations by german composed performed in Spain, Manuscript 984 clearly shows the insuperable contradiction that the scholar has to face when considering completed works like the tone poem Catalonia (1908), with a remarkably rich orchestration reminding the French scent of the Paul Dukas school; on the other, a number of rough drafts, often written an extremely neglected scoring technique, that seem to be created by a different composer. Compositions like the aforementioned Catalonia suggest the necessity of considering the probable intervention of an orchestrator in Albéniz' works in which the orchestral palette appears with a wider range of nuances.

Jahrhunderts
There are two meanings for the terminology cyclic lamentations {Lamemtationes Jeremiae Prophetae): the liturgical cyclus combinâtes lections - number and the textportions of the lections differ by changing time and regions. But the focus of this essay lies on the musical cyclus. Returning musical sets or particels of sets will serve to structure and to attach the lamentation. Examples from the late 15th century show lamentations in a simple strophic form with strong orientation on cantus planus (tonus lamentationum). During the 16th century more elaborated cyclic forms had been composed - returning musical sets became paraphrased. They structure the musical cyclus while returning Jerusalem-sets have the function of a refrain. Cyclic elements are specific to the form of the lamentations. Many composers used them in a individual manner.

A late medieval musical manuscript from a nunnery at Palma de Mallorca, contains a rich repertory of hitherto unknow pieces with numerous particularities. It mixes pieces of monastic liturgy in plain chant an in mensural notation and includes monodic mensural and poliphonic pieces from the XIVth century, a good deal of tropes and some latin works with musical repetitions, quite similar to the latin laude, as well as songs to be inserted in the liturgy of the Mass which could be considered as dance music. These last pieces and some others show the strong connection of the manuscript with Italian contemporary sources. Moreover, numerous indications in the manuscript from Palma regarding the interpretation of the pieces provide with very interesting information about how singing was performed at the nunneries during that period.
