Manuel de Falla' s Siete canciones populares españolas: The composer's personal library, folksong models and the creative process
Manuel de Falla's personal library provides a unique resource for the study of the composer's assimilation of ideas, and his lifelong habit of annotating his reading material and scores heightens the library's usefulness to an understanding of his creative process. Falla's reliance on musical borrowings in his compositions means that a study of the printed scores in his library often gives insights into the sources employed and the development of his musical ideas. The limited extent of Falla's field work in the realm of folk music makes this source even more valuable to discussions of folk-inspired works such as the Siete canciones populares españolas. The provenance of the melodies employed by Falla in that work has been the subject of articles by Manuel Garcia Matos and Josep Crivillé i Bargalló. While indebted to their research, this study argues that in the Siete canciones populares españolas all of Falla's melodic lines and some of the accompaniments are based, to varying degrees, on the assimilation of materials taken from specific publications in his possession. Falla's exposure to and incorporation of folk music in his scores is also examined, and the Siete canciones populares españolas are situated within the creative context of Falla's Parisian milieu.
In his religious works, Francisco Guerrero several times uses a type of contrapuntal composition rather unusual in his period: writing on cantus firmus ostinato. For German musicologists, it represents one of the last forms of the medieval isorythmic motet. The architectural study, especially elaborate, is regulated by a real musical arithmetic scheme issued from ars música mathematica. Therefore, Guerrero dignifies his predecessors tradition illustrated by the Josquin des Prés's Miserere for 5 voices. He also succeeds his master Cristobal de Morales, appearing to make use of some of the former's models. Nevertheless he knows how to compose in an up-to-date manner and give oratorial meaning and efficiency to the ostinato, as the greatest rhetoricians. This peculiarity of this musical personality harmoniously combines with its innovating side -that of villancicos and polychorals motets- in order to give evidence of his universal genius.
Federico Garcia Lorca as Folklorist: the Ibero-American Romance de don Gato
Federico Garcia Lorca's interest in ballads {romances) dates from his childhood. Among his unedited hand-written manuscripts in the archives of the Fundación F. García Lorca (Madrid) is a version of the widely-diffused Romance de don Gato whose source he did not reveal. Utilizing its text, we have sought out some sixty orally transmitted variants, including that of his sister Isabel, together with musical transcriptions representing some twenty-three sung versions and variants from among unedited and published Castilian, Catalan, Galician, Valencian, Portuguese, Sephardic, and New World sources.
Francisco Guerrero (1528-1599), chapel master and polyphonist, represents a real glory for Spain, being the most hispanic-tempered composer, and the only of the 16th. Century that, remaining at the Iberian peninsula for his whole life, could see his works printed all around Spain, France, Italy and Flanders. The survival, moreover, of his works on manuscript sources (in many Spanish, and from the New World, collégial churches and Cathedrals), of common use in the Catholic liturgy till the end of the 18th. Century, makes him worthy of the edition -at the same level than Morales or Victoria- of his "Opera Omnia". In this paper, it is introduced' the artistic personality of the "maestro", through a selective specimen of his wide musical production in latin and Spanish languages, compiled in the described Series, to which will be needed to refer, in order to learn about the composer, as well as for having knowledge about the performance practice and the spreading of his music, via the many "media" performing Renaissance polyphony.
In the letters exchanged between Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Carl Friedrich Zelter the discussion concerning the so-called aesthetic of imitation (mimesis) on the one hand and the problem of "through composition" on the other occupies a prominent position. The example of the ballade, Johanna Sebus, and its setting by Zelter illustrates clearly Goethe's opinions on the possibilities of "musical painting". It also becomes evident that the poet was quite willing to forego the strophic scheme of a Lied setting in the interests of individual treatment of the text, in this case even to the extent of approving a form which approaches that of the cantata, complete with vocal ensemble. The numerous passages from the introductory chorus of Johann Sebastian Bach's St. Matthew Passion which Zelter incorporated into his setting permit further insight into the aesthetic values of the composer. They also document the fact that Zelter had familiarized himself with Bach's works much earlier than is generally supposed.
It is usual to show an opposition between the theory and practice, musicus and cantor in the music of Middle-Ages whose origin lies in the writings of St Augustine and Boethius. The superiority of Music Theory as a rational science influences the reject of the hearing in musical judgment. In the same way, the performer and the singer are considered inferior to the musician, id est. who has the scientific knowledge of the music. The legacy of this tradition is present in several treatises as well the opposition between the musician (the theorist) and the performer, singer or composer (practician). However, the real aim of Juan Bermudo and Francisco Salinas, is not to reject practice music, as inferior, but to promote the need of a scientific knowledge to well practice music. The wish of both theorits, as we can read in their writings, is to combat the ignorance of performers and singers which difficult the music development and growing. We can see the influence of the aristotelism in the importance of the union of theory and practice raising from experience. Both writers, Bermudo and Salinas, proclaim the need of the hearing in musical judgment.
From 1554 to 1835, the musical practice was established in the diocese of Girona in 26 parishes, 6 monasteries, 3 collégial churches and 2 sanctuaries. All these places have a permanent organist, 37 churches, besides that of the Cathedral. Person who takes charge of organist must compose some new musical pieces and teach music without any gratification. Moreover in 7 localities, there was charge of chapel master. They were supported with foundations that become impoverished by the freeing from mortmain of 1835. The number of organists increased still between the years 1875 and 1936. The fall of number of priests after 1939 caused a drastic diminution of the ecclesiastical music, although we can test a devaluation of the musical function in the diocese of Girona from the beginning of XX century. In the article the foundations and also 391 organists and chapel masters of the diocese, between the years 1554 and 1987, are documented, from the Diocesan Archives of Girona.
This article is on the language of one of the more reknown and polemic Catalan composers of the 20th Century, this music, featured as by radical expressionism, has provoked the warmest praises by his supporters, and the hashest criticáis by his detractors as well. This discussion, often centered on his personal figure and not on his work, has given as a result a usually wrong perspective about his music, there is shown his work, and the way in which his autor do it, besides (this work, and the way in which his another do it, is shown here), the influence it has from the serial and dodecaphonic world related to the Viennese School, not forgetting its sensitive and aesthetic aspects, this two phases of creation, the serial one, and the actual phase, based on a harmonic system starting from the wagnerian Tristan's chord, compose a strongly drammatic language, otherwise singular in Spanish 20th Century music.
Poetic Line and Musical Structure in the 13th-century Motet
The examination of early two-voice motets reveals the prominence of the seven- (or eight-) syllable line in the poems. When declaimed in the usual manner, i.e. syllabically, in either the first or second rhythmic mode, this verse conforms to a time frame of two double Longs (or two modern measures in % meter). The different tenor patterns which are combined with these upper voices conform to the same time frame, producing a norm in which the two voices coincide at regular intervals. Departures from this norm produce overlapping of the two voices in the interests of variety. Of most use in explaining this phenomenon, however, are, not the 13th-century treatises on music, but rather those which deal with the new "rhythmic" poetry of the time.
