Latin Polyphony in the Early Spanish Baroque: Suggestions for Stylistic Criteria

    Get PDF
This article focuses on the principal stylistic features in selected Latin works by Mateo Romero (Maestro Capitán), in order to suggest some basic guidelines for the generic and stylistic diversity of the Latin corpus in the early Spanish baroque. It essentially demonstrates how, on the one hand, Romero's contrapuntal works in the supposedly 'estilo antiguo' are substantially modified, and how, on the other, traditional features are retained within his works in the 'new style'. A special emphasis is given to Romero's polychoral works, which exemplify the most 'progressive' polychoral trend in the early Spanish baroque.

The restauration carried out in the old monastery of San Zoilo de Carrión (Palencia) allowed to recover several musical extracts, among which we must point out a tiento from Peraza. Due to the stylistic complexity of this tiento, we may assume that its current aspect is the result of several modifications carried out by subsequent organists who would introduce in it elements of modernity. Nothing prevents us, therefore, to attribute the primitive form this work may have had originally to Francisco Guerrero's friend, the first important musician from the Peraza family, Francisco the father (1564-1598).La restauración llevada a cabo en el antiguo monasterio de San Zoilo de Carrión (Palencia) permitió recuperar diversos fragmentos musicales entre los que destaca un tiento de Peraza.

In 1952, a Commission Mixte formed by members of the International Musicological Society (IMS) and the International Association of Music Libraries (lAML) constituted in Paris the Répertoire International des Sources Musicales (RISM). In 1971, the first two volumes appeared - the Écrits imprimés concernant la musique edited by François Lesure. In 1960, a central editorial office (Zentralredaktion) was founded in Kassel for the Series of the Einzeldrucke vor 1800/Single Prints before 1800. Consisting of 13 volumes, this is now complete with the exception of an index. Since moving to Frankfurt am Main in 1987, the Zentralredaktion has concentrated its work on the Handschriften nach 1600/Manuscripts after 1600. Because of its scope, this project presented RISM with an enormous challenge and, therefore, digitalization was a very early priority. In 1995, the first CD-ROM with the RISM manuscript database appeared followed each year by a cumulative edition; the sixth CD appeared at the end of 2000 containing about 350,000 entries from 575 libraries in 31 countries. Looking at what has been achieved in the last 50 years and taking into account the Series of special catalogs, now expanded to 29 printed volumes, the result deserves respect. There are, however, gaps. These include the fact that in some countries with an especially rich tradition, sources not yet accessible will have to be integrated into the RISM catalog. Spain is such a country and F. Gonzalez Valle has rendered great service in making these sources accessible. His pupils and successors are called upon to mobilize all forces so that within the international RISM community Spain takes up the place appropriate to its past and present rich musical culture.[de] 1952 konstituierte eine Commission Mixte aus Mitgliedern der Internationalen Gesellschaft fur Musikwissenschaft (IGMW) und der Internationalen Vereinigung der Musikbibliotheken (IVMB) in Paris das Répertoire International des Sources Musicales (RISM). 1971 erschienen die ersten beiden Bande des RISM, die von François Lesure bearbeiteten Écrits imprimés concernant la musique.

The present paper deals with an approach to some cases on Spanish 17th century Music notated in a wide variety of forms. The graphic image of these cases, will help us to better understand the adopted shapes of music, in order to reach a better "circulation" among the chapel masters and composers of the period. And that concerns not only to music, but also to the accompanying poems, or other "working models" in further elaborations, such as musical incipits, etc. Then, this contribution goes to think about on the strong influence of the Catholic church -as main patron of music in Spain- on the conformed traditions and customs of Hispanic composition, as well as on the repertories, and how these "manners" conditioned peculiar ways of notating music, creating a big variety of manuscript copies. And last but not least, the paper studies possible interchanges between the "cultivated" and "popular" surroundings of music, trough an blurred round trip, that it is needed, again, to clarify today.

The 5th tiento de falsas of Juan Bautista Cabanilles is off the beaten track of his further compositions with this designation. Besides the typical dissonances and unusual progressions in tientos de falsas, this piece for organ surprises with an intricate polyphonic setting. Nearly two thirds of the whole piece can be reduced to a minimum of motivic material, that is presented in continually new facets by canonic voice-leading, sequences and inversion. Yet the rhythmic and melodic structure of this piece of an altogether traditional style is not touched. The effect upon the listener, describable as thrilling or charming - at the same time vexing by the monotony and fascinating by the subtle harmonic graduation of the sounds - proves this tiento as a jewel of a very late manierism.[de] Das fünfte Tiento de falsas von Juan Bautista Cabanilles fällt aus dem Rahmen seiner übrigen Kompositionen mit dieser Titelangabe.

    Get PDF
The definition of tonus given by Isidor's Etym., 3, 20 is here analysed consedering the sources of Isidors, namely Cassiodor, and the historical limitations of Isidor in understanding the toni. No longer knowing the ancient toni of the Antiquity and not yet the gregorian modes, his musical definition is wrongly taken from Grammar, and corresponds to the tonic accent of words.
