Ginés Pérez y su O Crux
The exact names attributed to Ginés Pérez were never at all clear. His first appointment to the Cathedral in Valencia complicated matters even more when he was referred to with the Christian name of what appeared to be "Juan", which only added to the confusion as it lead us to believe that he was the only candidate to apply for that position. Today, however, we now know his true and full names: he was called Ginés Pérez de la Parra. We also know, for the first time, the exact date of his death. The quality of his compositions not only contributed to their popularity but gave rise to the works of other composers being attributed to him. The authorship of the majority of his compositions are considered anonymous, though they can be located in diverse archives. Even so, we cannot find a single copy of the O Crux attributed to his name, despite the numerous copies and their variants that abound in Region of Valencia.

After a brief and general historical comment about different aspects of Baroque mentality, the article intends to illustrate the process of change which takes place, at different levels of appreciation, between Renaissance and Baroque Christmas carols. To do so, both musical versions of the old traditional refrain entitled "No puedo apartarme'', coming respectively from an anonymous composer from the Cancionero Musical de Palacio (15th-16th centuries) and from Juan Vasquez in his Recopilación de Sonetos y Villancicos (1560), are compared. Lastly, these two Renaissance versions are compared to the Baroque carol ''Madre, el amor'' (early 17th century) by Joan Pau Pujol, whose refrain, more modern and learned, offers a similar literary theme, yet its music is more evolved and elaborate.
Litanei und Ostinato in Bachs Passacaglia c-moll BWV 582
The theme of Bachs Passacaglia c-minor is based on the bass of Trio en Passacaille, a Christe-eleison-verset in the Messe du Deuziesme ton by André Raison. Bach transposes to c-minor and doubles the length of the theme, but is using the original form in four measures again for the following fugue. According to the contemporary alternatim praxis Raison's verset is the middle, central section of the nine-part Kyrie-cycle, the first part of the roman Ordinarium Missae, which is based on old litany-like acclamations and can be defined as a Litany too. May be that Bach's choosing an ostinato-form reflects the repetitive elements of a Litany and that the 33 entrances of the Passacaglia theme are related to the age of Christ.[de] Das Thema von Bachs Passacaglia c-moll beruht auf dem Bass eines Trio en Passacaille, der Christe-eleison- Versette aus der Messe du Deuziesme ton von André Raison.
In the music of the 16th century, stereotype four-note formulas are found in the instrumental as well as in the vocal idiom. Although frequently identical in appearance, their functions are very different. While indispensable in the instrumental idiom, particularly in keyboard music, where they represent the very essence of instruction in 15th-century organ treatises and fundamenta, they appear in vocal music only as additions to finished compositions or existing practices. What amounts to an absolute necessity in one case is merely an ornamental supplement in the other. In vocal music it is treated as a matter of performance carried out by a qualified soloist and limited to the musical centers of Italy. The present article raises the question as to how the genuinely instrumental and widely spread keyboard practice made its impact on the vocal ornaments of the singer, whose primary concern is the musical communication of language.[de] Die in der Musik des 16.
Ludwig van Beethoven composed two versions of Goethe's poem „Neue Liebe, neues Leben" in 1798/99 and 1810 respectively. A comparison of both versions reveals a change in the composer's intention. At first in several passages he followed the more traditional technique of transferring single words of the text directly into musical figures. Later on he seemed more intent on expressing the general mood and eliminated some of the rather simplistic details in favour of a more subjective rendering of the poems content.[de] Ludwig van Beethoven vertonte das Goethe-Gedicht „Neue Liebe, neues Leben" in zwei Fassungen 1798/99 und 1810.
The purimic-strophe, a traditional musico-poetic structure, has served to enrich the Judeo-Spanish repertoire, as a living and creative genre. Thus, to the corpus of Sephardic Coplas new coplas were added during the years of the Jews' exile in the Ottoman and in the Morocaan areas. This article, based on recording from my own fieldwork, deals precisely with the use of the purimic strophe as a structural model for themes that reflect the impact of social and historical circumstances on the individuum and his community. Among the them: customs, local and social changes, as well as political and historical events.
This work considers the history of the Musical Chapel of Barcelona's Cathedral from the death of the great Master and composer Francesc Valls to the year 1755, this date being imposed by space limitations, although afterwards it will have a continuity. It envisages to offer a view as close as possible to what the structure of the Musical Chapel was, together with its cultural structure. Human voices are above all distributed in different trades which have an important link with liturgy. We can see the human part of each limb, the economic difficulties of musicians and the administrative problems to overcome them.
Guillaume de Machaut: Notation and the Compositional Process
In recent scholarship it has been increasingly emphasized that Machaut, particularly in his later secular chansons, developed a new ideal of vertical sound, namely one which rested on a three- rather than a two-voice basis. The present article links this innovation to the composer's layered concept of notation and to the linear individuality of each of the three voices as evidenced by his use of repeated rhythmic motifs in the ballades of the late narrative poem.
