    MAKE A MATCH TYPE COOPERATIVE LEARNING MODEL TO IMPROVE INDONESIAN LANGUAGE LEARNING OUTCOMES

    The aim of the research is to describe the application of the Make a Match type cooperative learning model in improving Indonesian language learning outcomes for fourth grade students at SD Inpres Mannuruki 1, Biringkanya District, Makassar. The approach used in this research is a descriptive qualitative approach, the type of research is Classroom Action Research (PTK) which is carried out in 2 cycles. Each cycle goes through four stages, namely planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The focus of the research is the application of the Make a Match type cooperative learning model and Indonesian language learning outcomes. The research subjects were 28 class IV teachers and students. Data collection techniques are observation, tests, and documentation. The data analysis used is qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis. The teacher's teaching activities in cycle I were in the sufficient category, while in cycle II they were in the good category. Student learning activities in cycle I were in the poor category, while in cycle II were in the good category. The results of the study showed that the average value of learning outcomes in cycle I was in the poor category (incomplete), while in cycle II there was an increase in learning outcomes with the average student score is in the good category (complete) and has met the established Minimum Completeness Criteria (KKM). Thus, it can be concluded that through the implementation of the Make a Match type cooperative learning model, Indonesian language learning outcomes can be improved for fourth grade students at SD Inpres Mannuruki 1, Biringkanaya District, Makassar

    NEURO-LINGUISTIC PROGRAMMING AS A TEACHING METHOD TO IMPROVE FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING IN INDONESIAN EFL CLASSROOMS

    This study aims to analyse the effectiveness of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) as a teaching method in improving English language skills in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classes in Indonesia. The background of this study focuses on the challenges faced in teaching English, such as students' low language skills and lack of motivation to learn. The method used is a qualitative approach with a case study design, involving in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis of teachers and students in EFL classrooms. The results showed that NLP techniques, such as framing, anchoring, and rapport-building, significantly increased students' engagement and motivation in learning English. The use of these techniques created a more dynamic and supportive learning environment and helped students feel more confident in using English. These findings confirm the potential of NLP as an innovative tool in foreign language teaching in Indonesia, which can overcome various obstacles in the learning process

    ENHANCING ENGLISH COMMUNICATION SKILLS FOR COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT IN MULYAHARJA TOURISM VILLAGE

    This study examined the enhancement of English communication skills among adults working in Mulyaharja’s Tourism Village, with the aim of empowering the community through improved language proficiency. Adopting Beeton’s Active Community Tourism Development Model, which emphasizes empowering local communities through active participation, the study involved 18 adult participants and four English instructors from the College of Vocational Studies of IPB University. Using a combination of questionnaires and a pre-test/post-test design, the research assessed participants’ language skills and perceptions before and after the training. The findings revealed a significant improvement in post-test scores, with an average increase of 50%, indicating the program’s effectiveness in fostering language skills. Participants reported high satisfaction rates, with 82% recognizing the relevance of the training to their professional and personal lives. These outcomes underscore the role of English proficiency in enhancing interactions with foreign tourists and supporting community development. Feedback also highlighted high motivation levels, as participants valued the training’s applicability to their roles, while observational notes captured challenges faced, offering insights into areas for future training improvements. The research highlights the potential of targeted English training in rural tourism contexts to strengthen community empowerment and communication skills, suggesting that future programs could benefit from extended courses and follow-up sessions to consolidate learning

    Among prior research on code-switching, little has been done in bilingual program particularly in junior secondary level. This research aimed to investigate the use of code-switching by bilingual teachers; their reasons use code-switching, and students’ perceptions toward teachers’ code-switching. This study used descriptive qualitative models by conducting observation, in-depth teachers’ interview and a students’ focus group discussion (FGD) as data collection. The research participants were two bilingual teachers at Junior Secondary School in Makassar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The obtained data were transcribed and analyzed. The study discovered that teachers employed code-switching to explain material during teaching and learning process, manage the classroom as well as establish connections with the students. Furthermore, the information gathered from the teachers’ interviews matched the observations made in the classroom. Code-switching was utilized for a number of purposes, including: 1) Efficiency; 2) Supporting Comprehension; 3) Encouraging Student Participation; 4) Clarifying Instructions; and 5) Interpersonal interactions with students.     STUDENT’S PERCEPTION OF THE USE OF SPOTIFY APPLICATION TO IMPROVE LISTENING SKILLS IN GRADE 10 OF SMAN 106 JAKARTA

    This study aims to analyze students' perceptions of the use of Spotify application in improving English listening skills in class 10 of SMAN 106 Jakarta. This study used a descriptive qualitative method, with data collected through a Likert Scale-based questionnaire and interviews. The questionnaire consisted of statements measuring students' level of agreement on the effectiveness of Spotify, ranging from “Strongly Agree†to “Strongly Disagree.†The results show that the majority of students have a positive view of Spotify as a learning tool. Features such as lyrics, playlist recommendations, and ease of access were considered helpful in expanding music choices and improving listening skills. In addition, Spotify is also considered effective in improving students' vocabulary acquisition and pronunciation. The results of this study emphasize the importance of technology integration in language learning, with Spotify making a significant contribution in creating a fun and interactive learning atmosphere. Therefore, Spotify can be used as an innovative medium in the English language learning curriculum, especially to improve students' listening skill

    This study aims to describe the tolerance of Pertukaran Mahasiswa Merdeka (PMM) students in Makassar City. This research method uses descriptive qualitative research method. There were 10 respondents in this study with a sampling method, namely purposive sampling with the criteria that the respondents were inbound students of Pertukaran Mahasiswa Merdeka (PMM) 4 at Bosowa University. Data collection methods through observation and open interview. Data processing is done by collecting data, reducing data, presenting data and drawing conclusions. The results of this study are that all respondents practiced mutual tolerance with different religions and cultures characterized by mutual respect and esteem, not demeaning different tribes, considering students of different cultures and religions as brothers, not discriminating, and not discriminating between cultures and religions

    A STUDY OF HOW LANGUAGE ANXIETY AND FIRST LANGUAGE INFLUENCE AFFECT THE SPEAKING SKILLS IN SECOND LANGUAGE LEARNING

    Second language acquisition (SLA) is a multifaceted process, and speaking proficiency is often one of the most challenging aspects for learners. This study investigates the impact of two critical factors language anxiety and first language (L1) transfer on the speaking skills of second language learners, with a focus on Indonesian learners of Mandarin. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, the study explores how anxiety and L1 transfer shape learners' ability to speak confidently and fluently. Data were collected through semi-structured, in-depth interviews with five participants who have experienced both language anxiety and L1 transfer challenges. The findings reveal that language anxiety significantly impedes fluency, leading to hesitation, cognitive interference, and avoidance behavior. Similarly, L1 transfer had both positive and negative effects on speaking skills, with pronunciation and sentence structure often influenced by the learners' native language. The interaction between language anxiety and L1 transfer created a compounded effect, with negative transfer exacerbating anxiety and further hindering speaking performance. Positive L1 transfer, however, helped to alleviate anxiety and facilitated smoother speech. The study concludes by emphasizing the importance of addressing both emotional and linguistic challenges in SLA, suggesting that educators should adopt strategies to manage anxiety while leveraging positive L1 transfer to enhance speaking proficienc

    THE USE OF GRAMMARLY IN INCREASING THE STUDENTS’ WRITING ABILITY : STUDY OF LITERATURE REVIEW

    Academic writing is an essential skill for students at the secondary and higher education levels. However, mastering writing skills, particularly in grammar and sentence structure, remains a major challenge for many students. Various technology-based applications, such as Grammarly, have been developed to support students' improvement in writing abilities, particularly in aspects of grammar, vocabulary, and sentence coherence. This study aims to review various literature that highlights the effectiveness of Grammarly in enhancing students' writing skills. The method used in this study is a literature review by collecting and analyzing previous research findings related to the role of Grammarly in writing education. The literature review results indicate that Grammarly can help students automatically identify and correct grammatical and stylistic errors, provide real-time feedback, and motivate them to be more meticulous in constructing sentences and paragraphs. Consistent use of Grammarly can improve students' writing skills, particularly in terms of grammatical accuracy and sentence structure. Additionally, this application aids vocabulary development through alternative word and phrase suggestions that are more formal or contextually appropriate for academic writing. However, this study also found some limitations, such as students’ dependency on the application, which may reduce their critical thinking skills and creativity in writing. It can be concluded that Grammarly can be an effective tool to support writing education, but its use should be accompanied by guidance from teachers or lecturers so that students can understand the reasons behind the corrections and the application of proper grammar.     THE IMPLICATIONS OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE ON LINGUISTIC SHIFTS IN TRANSLATION: FROM ENGLISH INTO BAHASA INDONESIA

    This study aims to thoroughly explore the implications of artificial intelligence (AI) on linguistic shifts that occur when translating English texts into Bahasa Indonesia. This investigation used a qualitative approach. It is case study design. The subjects of this study were three graduate students of one of the State Universities in Sulawesi, Indonesia. The data in this study consists of interview transcripts and documents resulting from students’ translated texts using two types of AI technology, namely ChatGPT and Google Translate. The scholars classify linguistic shifts based on Catford's classification. This involves level shifts and category shifts, consisting of structure, unit, intra-system, and class shifts. The data shows that not just traditional translators are causing linguistic shifts, but artificial intelligence machines, considered almost surpassing human intelligence, contribute to these linguistic changes. This is because English and Bahasa Indonesia have different language structures, and when these structures do not align, the contextual meaning undergoes fundamental changes and shifts.     STUDENTS’ EXPERIENCES WITH SELF-ASSESSMENT IN IMPROVING ENGLISH WRITING

    Self-assessment has garnered significant attention particularly in improving English writing skills. It encourages students to evaluate their own work. Therefore, this research aims to explore students’ personal experiences and reflections on how self-assessment impacts their writing abilities. This research employs descriptive qualitative research and the subject is students in majoring English Education at Maros Muslim University. Semi-structured interview is used to collect data and analysed them using Miles & Huberman qualitative analysis. The results show that students have positive experience with self-assessment and it has affected their English writing skills after engage with self-assessment. The significant impact on students revealed enhancements in their vocabulary and enhanced the capacity to correlate sentences properly. Besides, self-assessment has built up students’ confidence in writing and gradually independent in using various vocabulary in writing
