EFL STUDENTS SELF-DIRECTED LEARNING IN USING YOUTUBE TO IMPROVE LISTENING SKILLS
This study aims to explore how EFL students use self-directed learning to improve their listening skills on YouTube utilizing the aspects of self-management, self-monitoring & motivation. The participants in this study were four (4) EFL learners majoring in English at Universitas Muhammadiyah Kendari during the academic year 2023/2024 who utilized YouTube for self-learning. The researcher employed semi-structured interviews to acquire data for this study. Using YouTube to improve listening skills, the researcher created 20 questions on students' self-directed learning. The findings highlight students' success and progression in using the YouTube platform developing self-management skills which consists of goal management, learning methods, support, and outcomes. Self-directed learning using the YouTube platform, which incorporates self-monitoring, is critical for enhancing students' learning abilities. Cognitive and metacognitive methods, such as capturing information and summarizing knowledge, help them improve their understanding and skills. In addition, this study emphasizes the importance of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in self-directed learning via YouTube. By gaining deeper insights into students' perceptions and experiences with YouTube for language learning, this study aims to provide valuable insights for educational practitioners to develop more effective and innovative teaching strategies
STUDENTS’ DIFFICULTIES IN READING COMPREHENSION IN RELATION TO THEIR LEARNING STYLE
This study aims to find out what problems students often face when they learn to understand what they read, what makes these problems happen, and how these problems differ based on how students like to learn. It looked at students in class XI.A at SMA Insan Cendekia Syech Yusuf. The study used a questionnaire called The VARK 8.0, and interviews. The results showed that students usually struggle with long the text is, the student's interest, how the teacher explains things, the student's background, physical problems, technical problems, and not having enough time. In the interviews, students talked about how their learning style affects their reading problems. For example, visual learners struggle with long texts, auditory learners have trouble with vocabulary, read/write learners find it hard to finish in time, and kinesthetic learners have issues with vocabulary and pronouncing words. Overall, the biggest problems for all learning styles were related to vocabulary and pronunciation
COOPERATIVE LEARNING MODEL TAKE AND GIVE TYPE TO IMPROVE LEARNING SCIENCE RESULTS FOR STUDENTS CLASS V UPTD SPF SD N 179 TALUMAE SOPPENG REGENCY
The problem in this research is how to apply the take and give type cooperative learning model to improve the science and science learning achievement of grade V students of UPTD SPF SD Negeri 179 Talumae, Soppeng Regency. This research is graderoom action research which aims to determine the process and results of implementing the take and give type of cooperative learning model to improve science learning achievement for grade V students and to determine the increase in learning achievement in grade V material by implementing the cooperative learning models. take and give type. The approach used in research is a qualitative approach. The data collection techniques used are observation, tests and documentation. The research subjects were grade teachers and 18 students. The carried out in two cycles. In cycle I, the research results on the learning process were at sufficient qualification (C) and the learning test results were at sufficient qualification (C). Cycle II research results on the learning process were in good qualifications (B) and learning test results were in good qualifications (B). EXAMINING THE APPLICATION OF CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS IN ANALYTICAL EXPOSITION TEXT COMPREHENSION AMONG EFL STUDENTS
This research analyzes students' critical thinking when reading exposition texts. Conducted at the Health Department of SMKN 1 Tolitoli, this qualitative research utilized observations as the data collection method to gather data relevant for this research and thematic analysis to analyze the collected data. The observation phase analyzed students' engagement with analytical exposition texts, revealing proficiency in various aspects of critical thinking, including comprehension, analysis, and evaluation. Students demonstrated the ability to recall key facts, summarize main ideas, and critically evaluate evidence to form well-supported opinions. Students emphasized the importance of activities such as careful reading, summarization, and discussion in enhancing their understanding and critical thinking abilities. The findings suggest the need for explicit instruction and support for all stages of critical reading to foster students' holistic development of critical thinking skills. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of students' critical thinking practices and provides valuable insights for educators seeking to enhance students' critical reading abilities in the context of analytical exposition texts
THE USE OF METACOGNITIVE STRATEGY AND STUDENTS’ ENGLISH ACHIEVEMENT
This study investigated the correlation between students' use of metacognitive strategies and their English achievement in grade XI Science at SMA Advent UNKLAB. The study aimed to explore the level of metacognitive strategy use among students, assess their English achievement, and determined if there is a significant correlation between metacognitive strategy use and English achievement. The research employed a quantitative approach, utilizing descriptive and correlational methods. Data was collected through a questionnaire adapted from Bessai (2018) to measure metacognitive strategy use, and English mid-test results are used for academic achievement. The study includes 118 students from four different classes in grade XI Science. The findings revealed that students exhibit a high level of metacognitive strategy use, with a mean score of 3.71. Additionally, their English achievement is considered good, with an average score of 86. The Pearson correlation coefficient indicated a significant positive correlation (r = 0.374, p = 0.001) between students' metacognitive strategy use and their English achievement. In conclusion, this study recommended that teachers motivate students to use metacognitive strategies for learning English. Further investigations in different school environments and grade levels are suggested for a deeper understanding of this relationship
IMPROVING STUDENTS’ WRITING SKILL IN NARRATIVE TEXT BY USING PIE (POINT, ILLUSTRATION,EXPLANATION) STRATEGY AT SMPN 8 MAKASSAR
The purpose of this research was to improve students’ writing skill by using Pie (Point, Illustration, Explanation) Strategy in narrative text for eight grade Students’ of SMPN 8 Makassar in the Academic year 2022/2023. The research used the pre-experiment with pre-test and post-test research.The total population of the research was the eight grade Students of which consist of 36 Students. Than, the data had been collecting by using writing test which was applied in pre-test and post-test. The process of the research was applied four times. The research was conducted by giving treatment and succeeded in improving Students’ writing skill in several aspect, namely content, organization, vocabulary, grammar, and mechanic.The treatment was carried out using PIE Strategy in narrative text. After conducting the research then the data were analyzed using test analysis on SPSS 16. The result of the average writing skill score on pre-test and post- test was 47.61. After the reserarcher gave treatment using Pie Strategy, it turned out that the score of student writing skill in narrative text in the post-test increased to 79.03 . Therefore, the researcher concludes that writing skill in narrative text using PIE strategy can improve the writing narrative text ability of class VIII.9 Students’ at SMPN 8 Makassar.Keywords: Writing, skill, Narrative,text, PIE (Point, Illustration, Explanation
ANALISIS KESULITAN SISWA DALAM MEMBACA PERMULAAN DI KELAS II UPT SPF SD INPRES MONGISIDI
ABSTRAK
Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan kesulitan yang dialami oleh siswa dalam membaca permulaan di kelas II UPT SPF SD Inpres Mongisidi. Hal yang melatarbelakangi penelitian ini adalah banyaknya peserta didik di kelas rendah yang mengalami kesulitan dalam membaca. Jenis Penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah deskriptif dengan pendekatan kualitatif yang dilakukan di UPT SPF SD Inpres Mongisidi tahun 2023, subjek penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas II dengan jumlah 29 siswa dengan jumlah 1 guru kelas II UPT SPF SD Inpres Mongisidi.Teknik Pengumpulan data melalui observasi, wawancara, serta dokumentasi. Teknik analisis data dilakukan dengan reduksi data, penyajian data, dan menarik kesimpulan.Hasil penelitian tentang analisis kesulitan siswa dalam membaca permulaan di kelas II UPT SPF SD Inpres Mongisidi dapat dikatakan cukup baik. Selama proses pembelajaran peneliti melihat situasi pembelajaran yang kondusif. Namun beberapa siswa tidak memperhatikan pembelajaran yang disebabkan oleh beberapa faktor yang di alami siswa . ketika peneliti mewawancarai siswa ditemukan beberapa faktor yang menjadi kesulitan membaca permulaan diantaranya lingkungan keluarga, metode pembelajaran dan gangguan dari teman. Upaya yang dapat dilakukan untuk mengatasi permasalahan siswa dalam kesulitan membaca permulaan yaitu guru dan orang tua saling bekerja sama untuk memberikan motivasi agar siswa lebih giat dalam belajar, memberikan jam pelajaran tambahan setelah pulang sekolah, dan guru menggunakan media serta metode pembelajaran yang lebih kreatif sehingga siswa lebih tertarik pada pembelajaran.

THE EFFECT OF MOBILE- ASSISTED LANGUAGE LEARNING ON SPEAKING ABILITY OF EFL STUDENTS AT INDONESIAN PUBLIC JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL
This research aimed to explore the effect of Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) on speaking ability of EFL students at Indonesian public junior high school, namely SMP Negeri 37 Makassar, with a focus on the use of MALL in terms of the use of Cake application. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, involving semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and checklists to gain insights into students' experiences and perceptions of their speaking ability improvements. Ten students from class 9D were selected through purposive sampling, including five interested in speaking practice and five less interested. The findings revealed that the Cake application effectively improved students' speaking abilities through vocabulary exercises, pronunciation correction, and interactive quizzes, leading to increased fluency and confidence. Challenges such as the speed of native speakers and complex vocabulary were noted, suggesting a need for adjustable speech speed settings and content simplification. Integration with classroom activities was also recommended to reinforce learning. This research concluded that while Cake application is valuable, enhancements are needed to optimize its effectiveness
THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING TIKTOK ON STUDENTS' ENGLISH ACHIEVEMENT AT SMKN 8 MAJENE
English proficiency is necessary in our globalized era for both career advancement and academic achievement. Teachers at SMKN 8 Majene have tried a variety of educational approaches, but students' English language achievement has continuously lagged below the average of 5.5. The purpose of this study is to determine whether employing TikTok as a learning tool may improve students' engagement and English language proficiency. 32 students from SMKN 8 Majene's class XI participated in a quasi-experimental design. TikTok was a learning aid employed by the experimental group, whilst conventional teaching techniques were used by the control group. To gauge the learning outcomes, both groups received pre- and post-tests.The average post-test scores of the experimental group were significantly higher (69.2) than those of the control group (64.0). AN EVALUATION OF DIGITAL CONTENT ASSISTED LANGUAGE LEARNING ON FANS TO ENGLISH APPLICATION: A CASE STUDY ON SECONDARY SCHOOL IN MAKASSAR
In learning foreign languages, especially learning English, the use of digital technology is a necessity, aimed at overcoming the problems that often occur when the teaching and learning process takes place, such as lack of lessons to increase student time in practising language skills, limitations of authentic learning material, and too many students' studies. The writer offers Digital Content Assisted Language Learning (DCALL) as a solution to teaching and learning English. Digital Content Assisted Language Learning (DCALL)is a new form of learning in the digital era recently. DCALL is a content-based learning digital in the form of writings, images, videos, and authentic material obtained from various sources such as the Internet, social media, blogs, email, vlogs, television and so on used to simplify the teaching and learning process. In this study, the researchers want to know the perceptions of teachers and students about Digital Content Assisted Language Learning (DCALL) on Fans to English applications. A qualitative study was applied in this study. The participants in this study were 100 students from secondary schools in Makassar. Questionnaires and interviews were used in this study to know about it. The result of this study was that teachers and students gave positive perceptions about implementing Digital Content Assisted Language Learning (DCALL) on Fans to English applications.
