    Get PDF
This study investigates the underlying factors contributing to speaking inhibition among English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners, with a particular focus on barriers to oral proficiency. Despite the increasing emphasis on communicative competence in language education, many EFL students experience significant challenges when it comes to speaking English fluently and confidently. Through a qualitative approach, this research explores factors that hinder students' oral proficiency from both signs of inhibition and internal factors include language anxiety, lack of self-confidence, and fear of making mistakes. Data were collected through classroom observation and interviews involving thirteen (13) EFL learners who were taking Basic Speaking Course. The findings from observation reveal that mostly students showed less eye contact more often than other inhibition signs such as rubbing the palms and staggered voice during their speaking practice at classroom. While from interview result, it was found that students mostly experienced the inhibition factor in a combination of language barriers and psychological problems such as anxiety and fear of making mistakes.  This paper discusses these elements in detail and offers recommendations for educators to create a more supportive and conducive environment for developing students' oral proficiency. By addressing these barriers, educators can better facilitate EFL learners' ability to communicate effectively in English

However, the classroom activities carried out was not really suitable with the characteristics of PBL; and (3) the students’ perceptions on the impact of PBL in learning process was largely agreed in terms of the benefit of PBL for them. Detailed findings will be presented and their implications discussed

This study explores the use of songs in self-directed learning (SDL) to enhance vocabulary acquisition among English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students. While vocabulary acquisition is essential in language learning, there is limited research on how students independently use songs outside the classroom to improve their vocabulary. This qualitative case study examines the experiences of two students from Universitas Muhammadiyah Kendari, focusing on their strategies, challenges, and perceived benefits of using songs for vocabulary development. Purposive sampling was used to select participants who had a strong interest and experience in using songs for language learning, ensuring relevant insights.Data were collected through in-depth interviews, where participants discussed their song selection process, vocabulary learning strategies, and the challenges they faced. Thematic analysis was applied to identify key themes, such as motivation, repetition, self-directed learning strategies, and challenges, including fast-paced lyrics and slang. The findings show that personal motivation plays a key role in song selection, with participants choosing songs that resonate emotionally and have clear lyrics. Repetition was vital for vocabulary retention, while self-directed strategies like looking up unfamiliar words online helped expand vocabulary. However, challenges such as fast-paced lyrics and slang required adaptations, such as slowing down songs or using supplementary resources. This study highlights the potential of songs as a tool in SDL for vocabulary acquisition, suggesting a balanced approach that integrates songs with other language learning methods. It provides practical insights for EFL educators considering the use of songs in language learnin

This qualitative study investigates the effect of interaction on ESL acquisition in a Mandarin-speaking environment in terms of comprehension, output confidence, and linguistic accuracy. Data collection was done through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and reflective journals involving Mandarin-speaking ESL learners. The findings show that interactive learning environments significantly enhance comprehension by enabling learners to negotiate meaning and clarify complex linguistic forms. Besides, the regular activity of interactive tasks enhances learners' confidence and precision in complex language production. Scaffolding by the teacher and corrective feedback, especially through methods like recasting and elicitation, further fine-tune grammatical accuracy and pronunciation to overcome specific problems of Mandarin-speaking learners. The study emphasizes interaction as a necessary bridge between input and output, therefore offering practical insights for ESL instruction in linguistically distinct environments

REDEFINING ESP: BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN TRADITIONAL METHODS AND MODERN EDUCATIONAL NEEDS

    Get PDF
This literature review explores the evolving landscape of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) and examines how traditional methods can be integrated with modern educational needs to enhance language instruction. Initially, ESP focused on specialized vocabulary and discourse practices within specific professional fields, relying heavily on textbook-based instruction and rigid methodologies. These traditional approaches, while foundational, have been critiqued for their limited flexibility, engagement, and broader communicative development. Recent advancements in educational technology have introduced new opportunities for ESP, including interactive learning platforms, personalized instruction, and increased accessibility. These innovations address several limitations of traditional ESP methods by making learning more engaging and adaptable to diverse learner needs. The review highlights the benefits of integrating technology into ESP instruction, such as enhanced student engagement and personalized learning experiences. To bridge the gap between traditional and modern approaches, a balanced method combining face-to-face instruction with digital tools is proposed. Blended learning models and collaborative online platforms offer a more holistic and effective ESP education. However, challenges such as resource constraints, digital literacy, and appropriate assessment methods remain. The review concludes by emphasizing the importance of adopting a balanced approach that incorporates both traditional and modern methods to meet the evolving needs of ESP learners. Future research should focus on overcoming existing challenges and developing innovative solutions to further enhance ESP instruction in a rapidly changing educational environment. Keywords: English for Specific Purposes (ESP), traditional methods, educational technology, blended learning, personalized instruction, interactive learning, digital tools, resource constraints, digital literacy, assessment methods. &nbsp
