FROM NEED TO INNOVATION: DEVELOPING ENGLISH READING INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIAL FOR ISLAMIC EDUCATION DEPARTMENT
This study employed a descriptive research method with a mixed-methods approach to investigate the university students’ need in learning English reading at a private university in Southeast Sulawesi province, Indonesia. A descriptive design was used to analyze students’ needs in learning reading—particularly in relation to Islamic content—without manipulating variables. The research design followed a Needs Analysis framework in English for Specific Purposes (ESP), combining questionnaires for quantitative data and interviews for qualitative insights. The findings reveal that students are dominantly motivated by instrumental goals, with 87.75% aiming for better career opportunities, and high percentages driven by examination success (87%) and academic achievement (85%). Reading has been widely identified as a fundamental skill that plays a pivotal role in fostering vocabulary acquisition and enhancing academic literacy, particularly within the domain of Islamic studies. Students also expressed a preference for bilingual instruction, balancing Indonesian and English, to support comprehension and gradual exposure to authentic input. Overall, the study concludes that students’ motivations are multifaceted, encompassing career, academic, and disciplinary needs. These results underscore the importance of designing ESP-based English programs that integrate workplace relevance, academic literacy, and Islamic content within a flexible bilingual pedagogy
ANALYSIS OF DAILY CALORIE REQUIREMENTS
The balance between energy expended and energy consumed plays a crucial role in shaping motor skills, which in turn influences an individual’s ability to perform various physical activities optimally. Understanding daily calorie requirements is therefore essential for supporting physical performance, maintaining health, and preventing nutritional imbalances. This study aims to analyze daily caloric needs through four primary components: Body Mass Index (BMI), Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), Specific Dynamic Action (SDA), and classifications of energy expenditure based on activity levels. These components provide a comprehensive overview of the metabolic processes that determine individual nutritional demands. A cross-sectional research design was employed to gather data on 38 students enrolled in the Sports Nutrition course within the Physical Education, Health, and Recreation Study Program at Manado State University. BMI was used to categorize participants’ body composition, while BMR calculations helped estimate baseline energy requirements at rest. SDA was incorporated to account for the thermic effect of food during digestion, absorption, and nutrient metabolism. Additionally, daily activities were classified into specific energy categories to evaluate variations in energy expenditure throughout the day. The results of this analysis are expected to contribute valuable insights into students’ nutritional needs, helping tailor dietary recommendations to support their academic and physical training demands. Overall, this study emphasizes the importance of accurate caloric assessment in promoting optimal motor performance and sustaining overall well-being among university students engaged in sports-related disciplines

The results show that remuneration and motivation have a positive and significant effect on employee performance, both partially and simultaneously. The coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.360 indicates that 36% of employee performance variation is explained by remuneration and motivation. Thus, implementing a fair remuneration system and effective motivation strategies can improve employee productivity and performance at UN
INVESTIGATING THE ROLE OF YOUGLISH WEBSITE IN TEACHING AND LEARNING PRONUNCIATION: A QUALITATIVE PERSPECTIVE
This study investigated the role of the YouGlish website in teaching and learning English pronunciation. Using a qualitative descriptive design, the study was conducted with twelfth-grade students of SMAN 1 Sakra (class XII I). The data were collected through observation, questionnaires, and interview, and were analyzed thematically. The findings show that YouGlish encourages students to actively listen, repeat, and imitate native-like pronunciation, which increases their confidence and motivation. However, despite these benefits, the students also faced difficulties with suprasegmental features, accent variations, and technical issues. To overcome these challenges, they used strategies such as replaying videos, taking notes, and practicing with peers. This study concludes that YouGlish is a useful supplementary tool for pronunciation learning, especially when supported by teacher guidance and consistent practice

BRIDGING THEORY AND LEARNING: PEDAGOGICAL CHALLENGES IN AN EFL PSYCHOLINGUISTICS COURSE
Psycholinguistics is a core theoretical course in English Language Teaching (ELT) programmes, yet it is often perceived as challenging by EFL undergraduates due to its abstract concepts and cognitive demands. This study explores pedagogical challenges in bridging psycholinguistic theory and student learning in an EFL higher education context. Adopting a classroom-based qualitative case study design, the research was conducted in an undergraduate psycholinguistics course within an English education programme. Data were collected through classroom observations, student reflective journals, focus group discussions, and document analysis. Thematic analysis revealed several key challenges, including the abstract nature of theoretical concepts, difficulties in mediating theory through pedagogical practices, reduced student engagement during explanation-dominated instruction, and the linguistic demands of learning theory in English. The findings highlight the central role of pedagogical mediation in supporting students’ conceptual understanding and engagement in theory-oriented courses. Rather than viewing students’ difficulties as individual deficits, the study underscores the importance of examining pedagogy as a situated and relational practice shaped by teacher cognition and classroom context. The study offers pedagogical implications for EFL lecturers and teacher education programmes seeking to make psycholinguistics and other theory-based courses more accessible and meaningful for undergraduate learner
GENDERED AND RACIALIZED LANGUAGE IN GRACE M. CHO’S TASTES LIKE WAR: A FEMINIST STYLISTIC ANALYSIS
This study investigates how gendered and racial meanings are constructed through word-level language choices in Grace M. Cho’s memoir Tastes Like War (2021) using a feminist stylistic approach. Drawing on Sara Mills’ theory of gendered representation and evaluative language, supported by insights from Robin Lakoff and Dale Spender, the researcher examines how naming practices, evaluative adjectives, and role descriptions position female characters within patriarchal and racialized discourses. The study employs a descriptive qualitative method based on close textual reading and lexical analysis. The primary data consist of words, phrases, and expressions referring to female characters, particularly Cho’s mother, while secondary data include feminist stylistic scholarship and related studies on memoir and gender. The findings show that Kongja is frequently identified through relational and ethnic labels, while evaluative adjectives and prescriptive expressions frame her within norms of motherhood, domesticity, and female vulnerability. Pathologizing and racialized terms further construct deviation from ideal femininity as abnormal or stigmatized. At the same time, the memoir strategically reuses patriarchal language with ironic distance, exposing and questioning the ideological judgments imposed on immigrant womanhood. The study concludes that feminist stylistics is an effective framework for revealing how memoir language both reproduces and critiques gendered and racialized constructions of women’s identities. Keywords: feminist stylistics, namin
