    STUDENTS' PERCEPTIONS OF DIFFICULTIES IN SPEAKING ENGLISH DURING ENGLISH CLASS AT SMP SWASTA KRISTEN BNKP GUNUNGSITOLI

    Speaking is one of the basic skills in learnng English that enables students to convey ideas and communicate effectively. However, many students still face difficulties in speaking due to various factors, such as lack of vocabulary, fear of making mistakes, and lack of confidence. This research aims to analyze students' perceptions and the factors affecting their difficulties in speaking English. This study used a qualitative descriptive method with data collected through questionnaires, interviews, and documentation. The research was conducted at the eighth grade of SMP Swasta Kristen BNKP Gunungsitoli with 18 students as participants. The findings revealed that students experienced various difficulties in speaking English, which were categorized into psychological problems (such as fear of making mistakes, shyness, anxiety, lack of confidence, lack of motivation, lack of pronounciation, and lack of vocabulary), language problems (including inhibition, nothing to say, low and uneven participation and the tendency to use mother tongue), and other influencing factors (such as physical condition, intelligence, aptitude, and interest). Most students showed lack of confidence and anxiety when speaking English, which led to limited participation during English class. The results of this study are expected to provide valuable insights for teachers to develop more effective and student-centered teaching strategies, and to create a supportive learning environment that encourages students to speak actively in English

    STUDENTS’ PERCEPTION OF LECTURER CODE-SWITCHING IN OFFLINE AND ONLINE ENGLISH CLASSES AT IAIN BONE SOUTH SULAWESI

    This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach to explore students’ perceptions of lecturer code-switching in a hybrid English learning environment at IAIN Bone, South Sulawesi. The research site, IAIN Bone, is the largest higher education institution in Bone Regency, where hybrid learning known as combining online and offline instruction and it is still practiced there. This location was chosen based on initial observations showing that many students struggle to fully understand lessons delivered entirely in English. Participants in the study were fourth-semester students enrolled in an English Education hybrid class during the 2024/2025 academic year. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and continued until data saturation was achieved. The findings indicate that code-switching positively influenced students’ learning experiences. Students reported that bilingualism in the context of code-switching helped them better understand the material, reduced their anxiety during lessons, and supported vocabulary development. They viewed the use of both Indonesian and English by lecturers not as a hindrance, but as a helpful instructional strategy. Overall, the students expressed favorable perceptions of code-switching, considering it an inclusive and effective approach in hybrid English language instruction. These insights suggest that code-switching can play a meaningful role in supporting student comprehension and engagement in bilingual learning environments

    EXPLORING STUDENTS' PERCEPTION OF LISTENING SKILL IN PUBLIC SPEAKING: A PRAGMATIC APPROACH TO CORRECTING CONSTRUCTIVE ERRORS

    This study investigates the beliefs of the students in the fourth semester of English Education at University Muhammadiyah Prof. Dr. Hamka on the relevance of listening skills in public speaking. Using descriptive qualitative approach, the Likert-scale questionnaires and semi-structured interviews were applied as data-gathering tools to investigate the perception of students, their difficulties and their approaches towards the incorporation of listening as an act in their performance of speaking. The results showed that the students realized that listening is an important and dynamic part of quality communication, which supports audience awareness, speech clarity and confidence. However, many of them continue to struggle to create a balance between the delivery of their content and the immediate reaction of the audience. In the pragmatic approach, students began to recognize false positives in listening and also used reflection-based strategies such as the use of feedback and practicing presentations. An aspect raised in this study is the importance of pedagogical activities that support the development of listening as an active and formative skill that contributes to communicative competence in the area of the spoken word. &nbsp

    NEW STUDENTS' PERCEPTIONS OF THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE INDONESIAN LANGUAGE MATRICULATION PROGRAM AT THE BEGINNING OF THE ACADEMIC YEAR

    The matriculation program serves as a crucial step in assisting new students in understanding and adapting to the academic environment of higher education, particularly for those coming from diverse educational backgrounds. This study aims to explore the perceptions of new students participating in the Indonesian language matriculation program concerning the implementation of the program and its impact on their preparedness for attending classes. A survey was conducted with 39 students using a questionnaire that included various aspects such as the atmosphere, instructor guidance, course materials, and teaching methodologies. The survey results indicate that the majority of respondents hold a positive view towards the matriculation program. Specifically, 39% of students agreed or strongly agreed that the matriculation atmosphere was enjoyable. Furthermore, 74% of students felt that the guidance provided by lecturers and tutors was effective, 62% agreed that the materials taught were useful, and 69% stated that the content was relevant to their academic needs. The majority also concurred that the matriculation program aided them in preparing for their studies. The conclusions drawn from this research suggest that the matriculation program successfully provided the support necessary for new students to prepare for their academic journey. However, there is a need for increased variation in teaching methods and the relevance of materials to adequately meet the needs of all students. Recommendations for program administrators include the regular evaluation and updating of curriculum content and teaching methods in the matriculation program to better accommodate the diversity of participants' educational background

    PARENTING IN THE DIGITAL ERA: INDONESIAN PARENTS' ADAPTATION TO TECHNOLOGY

    Technological advancements in the digital era have significantly transformed human civilization, particularly in the way families interact and practice parenting. In Indonesia, these changes have become increasingly complex due to the growing access children have to the internet and digital devices from an early age. This phenomenon presents new challenges for parents, such as exposure to negative content, gadget addiction, reduced social interaction, and a digital literacy gap between parents and children. This study aims to explore in depth the dynamics of parenting in the digital era within the Indonesian context. The research employs a descriptive-qualitative approach, referring to various relevant national and international literature sources. Findings indicate that many parents still face confusion in setting boundaries and supervising their children’s digital activities, while others have begun to adopt more adaptive and digitally literate parenting approaches. This article also proposes several strategies that parents can implement, such as strengthening family communication, utilizing digital monitoring tools, and continuously enhancing their technological knowledge. With proper understanding and approach, parents in Indonesia can become effective partners in guiding their children to navigate the digital age safely, healthily, and with dignity

    DEVELOPING SPEAKING PROFICIENCY IN INDONESIAN EFL CLASSROOMS: A QUALITATIVE STUDY ON CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS

    Speaking is a fundamental skill in English language learning, yet it remains one of the most difficult to master for EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learners. This study explores the key challenges that hinder speaking proficiency in Indonesian EFL classrooms and identifies practical solutions to address these issues. Using qualitative methods, classroom observation, teacher interviews, focus group discussions, and document analysis, the study reveals four major barriers: psychological factors such as anxiety and low confidence, instructional limitations including teacher-centered approaches and time constraints, limited exposure to authentic English input, and the absence of structured speaking assessments. The discussion connects these findings with recent pedagogical research from 2020 to 2025, emphasizing the need for affective support, communicative teaching methods, authentic language input, and formative speaking evaluation. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of speaking instruction in the Indonesian context and provides practical insights for educators and policymakers aiming to design effective, communicative EFL speaking programs.     THE VALIDITY OF ENGLISH READING MATERIALS FOR CHEMICAL ENGINEERING STUDENTS

    This study evaluates the validity of English reading materials tailored for chemical engineering students, focusing on four key dimensions: appropriateness and depth, accuracy, communicative clarity, and layout. Validation was conducted by two expert validators, yielding high scores in most areas. Results indicate that the materials are well-aligned with learning objectives and specific competencies required for chemical engineering, though minor adjustments in certain areas could enhance alignment with evolving standards. High scores in communicative clarity and consistency in layout support the reading materials’ effectiveness in enhancing reading skills while managing cognitive load. Minor refinements are recommended to improve clarity for varied comprehension levels and multimedia content relevance. Overall, the materials show high feasibility and relevance, suggesting their potential effectiveness in supporting language and technical skill development in chemical engineering students

    ENGLISH TEACHING CHALLENGES WITH STRONG LOCAL LANGUAGES IN REMOTE AREAS : AN ETHNOGRAPHIC STUDY

    This ethnographic study explores the challenges faced by English language teachers in remote areas with strong local language cultures, with a focus on SMPN 1 Kabangka, located in Muna Regency, Southeast Sulawesi. The study is guided by Ethnolinguistic Identity Theory, which emphasizes the role of language in shaping group identity and social belonging. In regions where a local language—such as Muna—is strongly embedded in daily communication, the introduction of English in the classroom creates both linguistic and cultural tensions.Using a qualitative ethnographic approach, data were collected through classroom observations and semi-structured interviews with three English teachers. The findings reveal that the dominance of the Muna language significantly affects instructional delivery, student engagement, and the development of English language skills. Teachers often resort to code-switching between English, Indonesian, and Muna to facilitate comprehension, but this strategy reduces consistent exposure to English and can impede learners’ language acquisition.Additional challenges include limited access to teaching resources, lack of professional development tailored to multilingual contexts, and the misalignment between the national curriculum and local linguistic realities. Students’ low motivation to learn English is also linked to their stronger identification with the local language, reinforcing the relevance of Ethnolinguistic Identity Theory in this context. Despite these obstacles, teachers demonstrate resilience and adaptability by incorporating local culture into English instruction, simplifying materials, and building rapport with students

    Mobile-assisted Language Learning (MALL) and IoT technology have revolutionized language learning approaches, bringing a new level of flexibility and accessibility to the field. Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) is a framework for enhancing teacher knowledge and teaching practices in educational contexts. It emphasizes the integration of teacher competencies and the development of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in language teaching and learning. Some technologies have been integrated into teaching and learning English and effectively enhance language learning experiences, improve language skills, and provide flexibility and accessibility in language education, reflecting a growing interest in leveraging mobile technologies to support EFL instruction, such as LMS, YouTube, podcasts and vodcasts, Kahoot, AI-powered technologies, digital whiteboards, and conferences. Teachers' attitudes, beliefs, and self-efficacy can inform professional development initiatives and instructional strategies for enhancing technology integration in educational setting

    DEVELOPING THE STUDENTS’ COPYWRITING SKILLS THROUGH COPYWRITING PROJECT AT ENGLISH DEPARTMENT, FACULTY OF LANGUAGES AND LITERATURE, UNIVERSITAS NEGERI MAKASSAR

    This research explores the implementation and outcomes of a copywriting project conducted for third-semester students of the Applied English (Business English Communication) Program, Diploma IV, English Department, Faculty of Languages and Literature, Universitas Negeri Makassar. Integrated into the compulsory Marketing and Advertising course, the project involved 60 students from two classes (A and B) during the 2025 academic year. This study aimed to analyze the quality of students' copywriting and identify the most preferred types of copywriting among them. Utilizing a qualitative research design with observational techniques, the project followed four main stages: product/service selection, buyer persona development, headline writing, and copywriting creation. Findings revealed gender-based trends in product/service choices. Male students tended to focus on automobiles, men’s fashion, perfumes, food and beverages, and service-based projects such as game top-ups, laptop repairs, plumbing, and travel. Female students predominantly selected cosmetics, women’s fashion, food and beverages, as well as services like laundry and tailoring. Students demonstrated awareness of target audiences by developing buyer personas and crafting headlines designed to attract attention. The final copywriting outputs showcased a variety of formats, with visual copy emerging as the most favored type. Overall, the project indicates that students showed interest and aptitude in copywriting. The activity is expected to enhance their practical skills and prepare them for future careers as copywriters in advertising agencies, digital media companies, or as freelancers
