NAVIGATING DIGITAL ASSESSMENT: TEACHER-IDENTIFIED CHALLENGES AND STRATEGIES IN USING WORDWALL IN EFL CLASSROOMS
This study investigates the challenges and strategies experienced by English teachers in utilizing Wordwall as a digital assessment tool in a rural junior high school in Indonesia. While digital platforms are increasingly integrated into English language teaching, their application in under-resourced environments poses unique complexities. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, the study draws on in-depth interviews with two English teachers from SMPN 1 Tinondo, Southeast Sulawesi. Data were analyzed thematically using Braun and Clarke’s framework, revealing three major findings. First, infrastructural barriers, including limited internet access, shared digital devices, and inadequate training, significantly constrained the optimal use of Wordwall. Second, despite these limitations, teachers acknowledged various pedagogical benefits, such as increased student motivation, interactive assessment experiences, and alignment with competency-based curriculum goals. Third, teachers demonstrated creative adaptation strategies, such as rotating device access, using group-based tasks, and modifying content formats to accommodate technical challenges. These strategies reflect a high degree of teacher agency in overcoming contextual constraints. The study contributes to the discourse on digital assessment in rural EFL contexts by highlighting not only the technological and pedagogical dimensions but also the socio-cultural factors that shape implementation. The findings offer valuable implications for teacher training, policy development, and digital tool design tailored to low-resource setting

LANGUAGE ACCULTURATION IN THE NOVEL LANGIT GORYEO: CULTURAL ENCOUNTER BETWEEN KOREAN AND JAVANESE IDENTITIES, A STUDY BY JOHN W. BERRY
This study explores the representation of linguistic acculturation between Javanese (Yogyakarta) and Korean cultures in the novel Langit Goryeo by Berliana Kimberly through the framework of John W. Berry’s acculturation theory. The research aims to investigate how characters in the novel adopt, negotiate, and preserve cultural identities in the context of intercultural encounters. Using a qualitative-descriptive approach, the study identifies and categorizes linguistic and cultural interactions based on Berry’s four acculturation strategies: assimilation, integration, separation, and marginalization. The analysis reveals that integration is the dominant acculturation mode depicted in the novel, wherein characters maintain their cultural roots while engaging harmoniously with the host culture. Instances of assimilation and separation are also present, showing the fluid and contextual nature of acculturation. However, no indication of marginalization was found, suggesting an intentional narrative that values collaboration and intercultural dialogue. The findings demonstrate how literary works can function as sociocultural reflections and pedagogical tools in understanding multicultural dynamics. The novel highlights that integrative acculturation fosters inclusive relationships and mutual respect across cultures. This study contributes to the field of literary linguistics and intercultural communication by emphasizing the role of narrative fiction in shaping cross-cultural understandin

ENGLISH EDUCATION STUDENTS’ PERCEPTIONS OF WRITING THEIR FIRST RESEARCH PROPOSAL
This study investigates English Education students’ perceptions of writing their first research proposal, focusing on the cognitive, linguistic, emotional, and instructional challenges they experience. A qualitative descriptive design was employed, involving twenty undergraduate students, ten third-semester students enrolled in the Academic Writing course, and ten fifth-semester students enrolled in Research Methodology. Data were collected through an open-ended Google Form questionnaire and were analyzed thematically following Braun and Clarke’s (2006) six-phase framework. Findings reveal six major themes: (1) limited prior knowledge and conceptual uncertainty, (2) difficulties understanding research components, (3) academic writing challenges, (4) emotional reactions including anxiety, low confidence, and overwhelm, (5) need for clearer guidance, examples, and support, and (6) expectations for improving proposal-writing instruction. Third-semester students commonly expressed confusion and unfamiliarity with basic research concepts, while fifth-semester students demonstrated greater theoretical understanding but still struggled to apply these concepts to actual writing tasks. Students also reported linguistic challenges such as organizing ideas, paraphrasing, using appropriate academic vocabulary, and applying APA formatting rules. Emotionally, students experienced anxiety and fear of making mistakes, which hindered their ability to engage confidently in the writing process. They consistently emphasized the need for step-by-step instruction, practical examples, writing workshops, and constructive feedback. Overall, this study highlights the importance of strengthening research literacy instruction in English Education programs by integrating conceptual understanding, academic writing support, process-based guidance, and emotional scaffolding. Enhancing these areas can help students develop the confidence and competence necessary to complete their research proposals effectively
