THE SOCIAL MEANING OF ALANG AS A TRADITIONAL TORAJA RICE GRANARY AND ITS IMPLICATIONS FOR CHARACTER EDUCATION

The traditional rice barn of the Toraja community, known as Alang, serves not only as a storage facility for harvested rice but also embodies deeply rooted socio-cultural values that have been transmitted across generations. These social values hold significant potential for strengthening students’ character education. This study aims to uncover the social meanings embedded in Alang and to examine their implications for the development of character education at the elementary school level. The research employed a qualitative approach using an ethnographic study method. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation. The findings indicate that the socio-economic development of Torajan society has led to a transformation in the function of Alang, from a traditional rice storage structure into a symbol of cultural identity and social status. The number of Alang, the motifs of their carvings, and their structural quality signify levels of prosperity and social prestige (customary status). Although some community members no longer store rice in a traditional manner, social values such as siangkaran (mutual cooperation), katuoan (family loyalty), and respect for ancestors continue to thrive within Torajan cultural narratives and have strong implications for character education.   &nbsp

This research explores the role of metalinguistic awareness in English as a foreign language learning through a psycholinguistics perspective and analyzes its implications for curriculum design. Employing a qualitative approach with library research methods, this study synthesizes academic literature to understand dimensions of metalinguistic awareness including phonological, morphological, syntactic, semantic, pragmatic, and orthographic awareness and their roles in cognitive processes of language learning. Findings indicate that metalinguistic awareness significantly correlates with language skills, particularly reading comprehension, and functions as a strong mediator in achieving linguistic competence. Learners with multilingual backgrounds demonstrate higher performance in metalinguistic awareness compared to monolingual learners. Practical implications suggest the necessity of systematic integration of metalinguistic awareness development activities in curriculum through active learning approaches, utilization of learning technologies, and consideration of multilingual contexts. This research contributes theoretically to enriching applied psycholinguistics literature and offers practical guidance for curriculum developers to design learning programs responsive to learners' cognitive needs by positioning metalinguistic awareness as a core component of English language competence development. &nbsp

AI-MEDIATED SCAFFOLDING IN CIVIC ENGLISH: A COMPARATIVE PEDAGOGICAL PERSPECTIVE FROM INDONESIAN AND UZBEK HIGHER EDUCATION

This study explores the integration of Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen-AI) as a scaffolding tool for mastering English for Specific Purposes (ESP) within the field of Civic Education. By adopting a cross-regional perspective, the research examines how AI facilitates technical vocabulary acquisition and grammatical competence—specifically regarding Modal Verbs—among pre-service teachers in Indonesia and Uzbekistan, two nations currently undergoing significant digital transformations in their educational sectors. The research utilizes a descriptive-evaluative approach, integrating a pedagogical needs analysis from an Indonesian cohort with a comparative policy review of Uzbekistan’s recent foreign language reforms. Data were gathered through structured surveys focusing on linguistic barriers in "Civic English," AI interaction patterns, and student preferences for interactive, AI-driven learning modules. The results reveal a shared "linguistic gap" in both contexts, where traditional static materials (PDFs) fail to address the nuances of legal English. 61.5% of students exhibited difficulty in distinguishing Modal Verbs (Must, Should, Can) in constitutional contexts. However, the study identifies that Gen-AI acts as a "Linguistic Equalizer," with over 80% of respondents demanding AI-integrated modules that offer real-time feedback and debate simulations. The findings suggest that AI effectively lowers the "Affective Filter" for students in both Southeast and Central Asia, providing a standardized digital scaffolding that transcends geographical boundaries. The study argues for a shift toward "AI-Mediated Scaffolding" in ESP curricula. It highlights that educational policies in both Indonesia (Merdeka Belajar) and Uzbekistan (New Uzbekistan Strategy) provide a fertile ground for AI integration. The research recommends a collaborative framework for developing interactive, cross-cultural ESP modules that prepare future civic educators for global professional engagemen

THE APPLICATION OF PROBLEM BASED LEARNING (PBL) MODEL ASSISTED BY BLENDED LEARNING TO ENHANCE METACOGNITIVE AWARENESS

Metacognitive awareness is essential in fostering students' ability to regulate their own learning processes, especially in complex subjects like analytical chemistry. This study investigates the effectiveness of a Problem Based Learning (PBL) model assisted by Blended Learning in enhancing metacognitive awareness among university students in the topic of UV-Vis spectroscopy. Using a quasi-experimental design, two groups were compared: an experimental group receiving PBL combined with Blended Learning, and a control group receiving conventional PBL. Data collection involved pretest and posttest cognitive assessments, metacognitive awareness questionnaires, and observation of student engagement on the Edmodo platform. The results demonstrate significant improvement in the experimental group’s posttest cognitive scores (mean = 85.59) compared to the control group (mean = 77.37), with effects also observed in metacognitive awareness and self-regulation skills (p < 0.05). These findings suggest that integrating Blended Learning into the PBL framework can effectively enhance cognition, metacognitive skills, and student motivation in chemistry education. The study encourages the adoption of this blended instructional strategy and further research on its wider applicability
