Proposal of Visual Literacy Indicators for competencies courses. An academic literacy perspective for academic excellence

The paper presents the results of a reasearch based on the evaluation culture approach and particularly on the social corporate responsibility of universities and their duty to account for the quality of their mission, researches, teaching and dissemination of knowledge. Metrics and international rankings have been developed to measure value and performance of the universities; as a consequence, the academic world must express appropriate means in order to improve its position in quality evaluation rankings. The research project focuses on “La Sapienza” University of Rome and especially on international rankings and metrics used to measure its degree of information literacy. The indicators that would take advantage of a program devoted to digital competences are here listed and analyzed to underline: a) the instructional plan, based on the cooperation between researchers-professors and librarians; connectivism as a pedagogical concept; the flipped classroom methodology; the necessity of taking into due account visual competencies and social networks; Educational Digital Objects as Web didactic materials; b) the educational plan meant to enhance visual competences, given the relevance of virtual and augmented reality for university education. The best Visual Literacy standards are selected to empower iconic and visual reading and to envision effective goals, learnign units, methodology and quality. The evaluation must then be considered as one of the principal results of the research itself: it must be based on competecies and quality, and the 13 indicators suggested to measure the educational program –  feedback and other metrics included –  will be of great use to help the University to highlight its quality standards. The paper presents the results of a research based on the evaluation culture approach and particularly on the social corporate responsibility of universities and their duty to account for the quality of their mission, researches, teaching and dissemination of knowledge. Knowledge Representation of digital Hermeneutics of archival and literary Sources

Scholarly analysis of archival, library, and literary sources results in a variety of digital artefacts meant to foster knowledge discovery and new research enquiries. Guidelines and standards to formally represent disciplinary information are available (e.g. XML schemas, ontologies, vocabularies). However, digital artefacts rarely address reusable structured information on the hermeneutical approach adopted by scholars when validating hypotheses. As a consequence, reproducibility and assessment of research results is hampered, and comparing online contradictory information is still a hard task. In this work we show how to leverage Semantic Web technologies in a high-level, portable data model for representing hermeneutical aspects related to cross-disciplinary analysis of archival and literary sources. We showcase three representative scenarios in the Cultural Heritage domain where the model is applied, and we describe benefits and limits of our solution

In margine ad archivi ibridi e sistemi integrati

Why define and describe an archive as hybrid? Haven’t archives always been hybrid in terms of media, functionality and purpose? And won’t they still be such in the future? Some reflections originate from these questions, starting from the definition and meaning of the term hybrid, the validity of principles and methods of the archival tradition in the digital environment, the organization of archives free from predetermined schemes, the role and activity of the archivist, of archival description and of multidimensional representation in an environment defined as hybrid.

When Linked Data is (not) enough. Cataloguing Tools between Obsolescence and Innovation

The irruption of the informative space of Web, as new manner to disseminate and share information content, has imposed in the last years an important rethinking of international bibliographic production in its theoretical and methodological basis. In this paper we try to understand the evolutive way of the cataloguing tools though the identification and definition of several change factors (technical and functional): which could be in the next future the new challenges related to the creation and treatment of information? The irruption of the informative space of Web, as new manner to disseminate and share information content, has imposed in the last years an important rethinking of international bibliographic production in its theoretical and methodological basis. The paper offers an overview of the complex, not easy period in which Antonio Panizzi was teaching at London University (1828-1831), innovatively suggesting that “a uniform program be adopted for the study of all modern languages and literatures” and nevertheless dedicating himself to research with care and passion. In the article, the teaching materials and custom tools he quickly provided to his students for learning italian language and culture are analyzed regarding concept, structure and target: The Elementary Italian Grammar 1828, and two anthologies of prose writings: Extracts from the Italian Prose Writers, 1828, and Stories from Italian Writers with a Literal Interlinear Traduction, 1830.The paper offers an overview of the complex, not easy period in which Antonio Panizzi was teaching at London University (1828-1831), innovatively suggesting that “a uniform program be adopted for the study of all modern languages and literatures” and nevertheless dedicating himself to research with care and passion. Open Access come nuovo paradigma. Un'evoluzione inevitabile?

After almost 20 years from the first Berlin Declaration, the end of 2018 saw a new impulse in open access to publications (and not only) with the launch of Plan S by the Coalition S and with the announcement of the launch of “European Open Science Cloud”. The two events are part of a new scenario that sees, in particular, publishers strongly urged by academic and government institutions to take the definitive step towards a true Open Science. After the transition from paper to electronic, everyone is called to a new challenge: to find one (or more) economically sustainable models that are no longer based on the subscription model but on that of publications. In this highly unstable phase, we speak generically of “transformative agreements”. Some characteristics and problems are here analyzed.

From an epistolary Corpus to a Networking of References

The article introduces the complete digital edition of Tommaso Campanella’s letters. It is a transcription of the full corpus of 172 letters written by Campanella in the years 1591-1639. This work is built on the print collection edited by Germana Ernst and published in 2010 by Olschki. Beyond metadata, an asset in themselves, each letter is enriched by information about the manuscript source (including the archive or the library holding it), the various editions, and a brief summary. The collection offers a detailed and comprehensive vision of the harsh conditions Campanella had to live through during the trials and the long years of imprisonment, at the same time showing, first-hand, the philosophical and theological discussions he had with learned of his time. In order to enhance this intellectual network, the opportunity of including the collection within the great Italian and European epistolary projects has been explored.L’articolo presenta l’edizione digitale dell’epistolario di Tommaso Campanella.

The purpose of this article is to introduce a seminal 1984 document on the structure of the “system of bibliographic links” of the Italian national library service (named SBN or Servizio Bibliotecario Nazionale). To some extent thirteen years before FRBR, the Entity-Relationship Model has been used to identify Entities, Attributes and Relationships within bibliographic records. The 1984 document can also be seen as a first step of a long path (which has not yet been concluded) of use of E-R model: also the IFLA LRM (2017) claims that it has been developed within the framework of an E-R model.

The purpose of this study is to analyze some correspondence exchanges to surface links between recurrent entities found in documents, which form a complex network in which correspondents, books, articles and persons cited in the letters, quoted entities linked to academic world and the documents themselves are linked together. The perspective of the multidimensionality of the environment in which sources are, which is composed by the vertical dimension – the correspondence containing the single documents -– and the horizontal dimension – represented by the links between the vertical dimensions – helps to proceed with the analysis of these inter-archival links. This analysis is made of two levels: the focus on correspondence (distant reading) and then on single document that is part of the correspondence (close reading). The correspondence between Armando Sapori and Gino Luzzatto was the starting point for the creation of the dataset, expanded with documents from correspondences between Roberto Sabatino Lopez and Gino Luzzatto, Armando Sapori and Lopez, Angelo Sraffa and Sapori. The results of network analysis make explicit the connections between the various entities: at the macro level they underline changes over time of correspondence, while at the micro level they highlight links between nodes within individual documents
