ITACH@ Project, Innovative Technologies And Cultural Heritage Aggregation, intends to offer innovative tools for the development of the tourism industry and Italian culture. This paper analyzes the particular technological component defined OpLiDaF, Open Linked Data Framework, a platform aimed the creation, structuring and visualizing data in RDF/XML. The paper discusses also the different formats, with special attention to procedures and techniques of processing data in relational databases, according to the instructions provided by the W3C Working Group RDB2RDF. It is working on the development of standard languages for mapping relational data and relational database schemas into RDF and OWL. The paper aims to show the potential of a language mapping between relational database schemas and ontologies implemented in RDF(S) or OWL, used in the platform OpLiDaF: the R2O (Relational to Ontology), which enables the production of data set extensible semantics explicit and well recognized.ITACH@ Project, Innovative Technologies And Cultural Heritage Aggregation, intends to offer innovative tools for the development of the tourism industry and Italian culture. The use of the Nuovo Soggettario for semantic indexing of web resources: issues and proposals
The essay deals with the creation of subject-headings for web resources related to Italian literature, art and linguistics with resort to the Nuovo soggettario system (NS). It describes the difficulties arisen and the results achieved in this regard during the development of a project aimed at creating web tools to facilitate the location of high quality web resources about Italian culture. One of these tools was a catalogue of web resources with subject headings, created using a modified version of the MICHAEL Data Model. The authors explain why they had to change the model to meet the needs set by the peculiar items of the catalogue, why the choose the NS for the subject-headings, their choices about the granularity of the description, their particular use of the “Intellectual/Bibliographic form” roles of the NS to match the features of their items that could be relevant for a user, and their consequent proposals of new terms for the NS Thesaurus and the questions that arose from these proposals
Towards a new model of OPAC. From information to knowledge.
The paper analyzes the evolution of libraries electronic catalogs evidencing the new technologies of the Semantic Web and Linked Data. The essay is divided into two distinct parts. In the first part starting from critical analysis of the new generation of OPAC functional model and discovery tools proposes the need for a revision of current development paradigm that accepting the theories of information behaviour can be based on the user, on its information needs, its behaviours, and on the analysis of components that takes part of search information process. In the second part of next publication will explore the possibility that Linked Data may be the most appropriate technology to build up new OPAC based on output of knowledge within the information process
The essay is dedicated to the theme of digital rights management on digitisation projects with particular reference to works into the public domain and to orphan works. The aim of the essay is to explain the main issues and criticalities that libraries have to face proposing and carrying out digitisation projects. For some years, the digitisation of cultural heritage involves libraries, archives and museums and is one of the main goals by the Digital Agenda for Europe. Indeed the digitisation is one essential tool to broaden the accessibility to the cultural heritage of Europe and to promote the growth. As a part of this context, the essay highlights the legal issues related to the process of digitization of cultural heritage for works into the public domain and for orphan works
FRBR Review Group initiatives and the world of linked data
The FRBR Review Group has the mandate to review and maintain IFLA's family of conceptual models and to develop guidelines and interpretive documents to assist in the application of the models. In September 2011 the Aggregates Working Group submitted its final report, clarifying the modeling of three distinct types of aggregates within an FRBR framework. Since the approval of the FRSAD model in 2010, the FRBR Review Group has been concentrating its efforts on the development of a consolidated statement of the three models (FRBR, FRAD, FRSAD) in the entity-relationship formalism. The interrelationships between the models are particularly illuminating with regards to the subject entities and relationships and the "naming" entities. In parallel, the FRBR/CIDOC CRM Harmonisation Working Group has been working to extend FRBRoo to include the entities, attributes and relationships defined in FRAD and FRSAD. A third essential aspect of the FRBR Review Group's work is the development of a series of namespaces for the entities, relationships, attributes and user tasks as defined in the three models. This process has raised a number of interesting questions and often clarifies the underlying semantics of the models. The FRBR Review Group has the mandate to review and maintain IFLA's family of conceptual models and to develop guidelines and interpretive documents to assist in the application of the models.
Established in 2005, the Hong Kong Maritime Museum (HKMM) is a relatively new private museum that aims to collect all forms of materials related to the development of boats, ships, maritime exploration and trade, and naval warfare on the South China coast, as well as its adjacent seas. The Museum not only serves as a unique platform for teaching and learning of the local heritage in Hong Kong, it also contributes greatly to the promotion of community engagement and social connections. The HKMM is also equipped with its own museum library, and it is called the CSSC (China State Shipbuilding Corporation) Maritime Heritage Resource Centre. In addition to supporting various research activities carried out by the Museum, this Resource Centre also serves as a central, and yet comprehensive repository for publications, and other archival documents on maritime heritage and history related to Southeastern China. This paper aims to compare the distinctive operational practices, and user needs between museums and libraries. It also examines the benefits and challenges of museum-library collaborations in the new knowledge-driven society. This paper features an interview with Kitty But (Librarian, CSSC Maritime Heritage Resource Centre, The Hong Kong Maritime Museum) and Robert Trio (Project Officer for Technology, The Hong Kong Maritime Museum), and in which they discussed their professional experiences in the fields of audience education; the implementation of different new technologies associated with the museum and library services; and various collaborative initiatives carried out between the Museum and the Resource Centre. Upcoming challenges and opportunities faced by both the Museum and Resource Centre are also discussed in this paper.
Bibliographic standards and Linked Data. Towards a collaboration between cultural and commercial sectors
The Central Institute for the Union Catalogue of Italian Libraries and Bibliographic Information (ICCU) is the National Bibliographic Agency for the coordination and dissemination of international standards and cataloguing rules within Italian libraries. Linked Heritage, the European project coordinated by ICCU, will contribute large quantities of new content to Europeana, from both the public and private sectors. The Work Package 4 Public private partnership is working to produce an innovative investigation that highlights the differences between metadata creation in the cultural sector (libraries, museums and archives), compared with the metadata of commercial sector. The work which the Group is carrying out, will point out the different roles and purposes between the public and private sectors: how commercial metadata can enrich the data with more information giving potential benefits and new services to Europeana users, while libraries models and standards provide stability, harmonization and an higher level of granularity of the data in order to facilitate the functions of resource discovery. WP4 Public private partnership will offer an opportunity of producing several metadata mappings. This paper analyzes the enriched information that can be offered beyond the traditional bibliographic description. The Central Institute for the Union Catalogue of Italian Libraries and Bibliographic Information (ICCU) is the National Bibliographic Agency for the coordination and dissemination of international standards and cataloguing rules within Italian libraries.
The paper presents the first results of a research which aims at evaluating how the public perception about libraries has evolved over the last five years in Europe. It quantifies and qualifies the presence of issues concerning libraries in the European press in order to answer the following research questions: which are the most discussed topics and have they changed over the last years? Are there any significant differences between the European countries and newspapers in the debate about libraries? The research is based upon a comparative textual analysis of eight print newspapers of national interest coming from four different European countries (UK, Italy, France and Spain) and concerns the quantity and quality of articles on libraries published from 2008 to 2012.The data analysis highlights the following main trends: public and national libraries are prevalent in the debate; a general agreement is found on the most popular topics; no relevant connection can be traced between the political areas the newspapers belong to and the topics dealt with; a deeper analysis of the national context is required to better interpret the differences among the newspapers; the effect of the economic crisis on the evolution of the debate is evident both in the presence/absence and in the rise/decline of some topics. As for now, the research proves to be effective not only to highlight different topics and approaches, but also to understand how newspapers relate with the common thoughts and the general feelings autonomously emerging from in the society
Linked Data: an Evolution
Actually the world is full of hi-tech devices that allow in different ways to stay always connected and up-to-date. The high level of interactivity and interoperability is now a fundamental prerogative in the new millennium communication which no one can be exempted. In particular, librarian universe must reconfigure this new way to exchange and provide information otherwise it will cause the steady decline, and this will cause a huge loss of users who will find different ways to information: such as tablet or smartphone. The linked data can provide significant support for libraries to ensure that they can still be leaders in the future. A brief mention to the studies conducted in this domain.Actually the world is full of hi-tech devices that allow in different ways to stay always connected and up-to-date.
