Results and Future Developments of the JICA Partnership Program “Awareness Project for Disaster Mitigation in Mongolia”

    Get PDF
The JICA partnership program, "Awareness Project for Disaster Mitigation against Large-scale Natural Disasters Associated with Global Environmental Change in Mongolia"( Representative: Yasuhiro Suzuki, Nagoya University), started in December 2017 . Originally, the project was planned to run for five years until September 2022, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was not possible to conduct onsite activities until fiscal year 2021. Therefore, the project held online meetings and conferences to sustain possible activities, and resumed on-site activities in August 2022 after about two and a half years. In recognition of its achievements and the importance of working with local residents, the project was completed in March 2024, after an extension of one and a half years. This project was designed in response to a request from the Mongolian government. Unlike the socalled training type projects that impart disaster prevention know-how, this project started with a detailed explanation of "what global environmental change is" and "what should be done for disaster prevention and mitigation". Then, in order to convince local residents that the project was "my thing," we implemented a mechanism for disaster reduction with the participation of local residents. Community leaders and residents were educated through workshops and disaster preparedness walks. We also created video content with expert explanations that can be used by community leaders to educate residents about disaster preparedness, and created hazard maps. In addition, the team cocreated a disaster prevention karuta (Japanese playing cards) as a disaster awareness activity for children. Since such activities could not be carried out by a single organization alone, the actual implementation of various activities allowed the Hovd Emergency Department, the prefecture, the city, and the schools to deepen cooperation, which has resulted in a more effective disaster preparedness system.departmental bulletin pape

The Characteristics of the‘ Education Industry’ and its Self-perception : Content analysis of‘ meta description’

    Get PDF
In recent years, there has been increasing collaboration and cooperation between educational institutions and external for-profit and non-profit organizations at all levels, from pre-school education to higher education and lifelong learning. In this trend, the involvement and participation of the‘ education industry’ is also progressing. We have previously examined the characteristics of the education industry, the content of its work, its reputation in society, its management policies, and its risk awareness (Tanimura, Kato and Hashimoto (2022), Hashimoto (2023a), Hashimoto (2024)). In this study, we aim to clarify how the education industry perceives its own organization and work, and how it promotes itself, based on the findings of previous studies. To this end, we conducted a quantitative analysis of the text content of the ‘meta descriptions’ on the websites of each company. First, we constructed a database from‘ Musubu’ by Baseconnect Inc., which was also used in Tanimura, Kato, and Hashimoto (2022), and extracted 7,667 companies in the ‘education industry’ from this database. Next, we conducted a quantitative text analysis of the ‘description’ of these companies, and examined changes in business content and year of establishment based on frequently occurring words. Furthermore, we conducted topic model analysis using LDA and extracted eight topics. The results of the topic analysis by industry and year of establishment showed that each industry used words that were characteristic of its business, and that there were no major changes in terms of year of establishment. These findings were generally the same as those of Tanimura, Kato and Hashimoto (2022), which analyzed ‘company profiles’ compiled by external organizations. In addition, the self-perception of the education industry has been stable for a long time, and the results suggest that the industry is conducting public relations activities in line with its appropriate image.departmental bulletin pape

A Critical Examination of Studies Focusing on Asymmetries in Japanese Conversations in Contact Situations

    Get PDF
Since the turn of the millennium, studies on asymmetries in Japanese conversations within contact situations have become more prominent in academic literature. However, there is still little consensus on the definition of the term "asymmetry," or on the concept itself. Furthermore, the specific dimensions of conversation that these studies focus on remain poorly defined, underscoring the need for systematic organization of the data. Although numerous surveys have been conducted, their divergent objectives have hindered the comprehensive utilization of their findings. This paper critically examines methodologies for analyzing conversational structures, while also exploring the broader relationships constructed through such interactions.departmental bulletin pape
