Sustainable Work Practices and Work–Life Balance: A Review of the Conceptual Framework for Malaysia’s Financial Sector
The COVID-19 pandemic has transformed the landscape of work, prompting organizations worldwide to adopt sustainable work practices that prioritize employee well-being and flexibility. This conceptual paper explores the relationship between sustainable work practices namely flexible work arrangements, remote work, job sharing, and supportive leave policies and employee work–life balance (WLB), with a specific focus on Malaysia’s financial sector. Grounded in Conservation of Resources Theory (COR), the paper argues that these practices function as critical resources that help employees reduce work–family conflict, preserve personal energy, and manage competing demands across life domains. The Social Exchange Theory (SET) framework is employed to position organizational support as a moderating influence, suggesting that when employees perceive their organizations as supportive, they are more likely to reciprocate with greater engagement, loyalty, and well-being. Furthermore, Work–Family Border Theory (BT) is used to contextualize how individuals navigate and manage the boundaries between professional and personal responsibilities.
The proposed conceptual framework outlines eight propositions that link sustainable practices and WLB, as well as the interaction effects of organizational support. This paper contributes to theory by integrating resource, boundary, and exchange-based perspectives, offering a multidimensional view of how workplace sustainability strategies affect employees\u27 holistic well-being. Practical implications are also discussed, including how human resource practitioners and policymakers in Malaysia’s financial sector can design and implement inclusive work policies that not only improve employee satisfaction and retention but also align with broader sustainability goals such as the United Nations SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth). By drawing attention to the interplay between supportive organizational environments and sustainable work design, this paper offers a timely foundation for future empirical studies and evidence-based policy development in the post-pandemic workforce
THE CONTRIBUTION OF THE STANDING CORPS INSTITUTION IN THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE EU LAW AND OF THE FUNDAMENTAL RIGHTS
The creation of the Standing Corps under the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) marks a significant development in the European Union’s efforts to strengthen the management of its external borders. As the first uniformed and permanent corps under EU authority, this institution reflects the Union’s growing capacity to act collectively in the fields of migration, security, and law enforcement. This paper investigates the contribution of the Standing Corps to the practical implementation of EU law and the safeguarding of fundamental rights. It explores how the Corps operates at the intersection between national and supranational governance, enforcing EU border and migration policies while being bound by the Charter of Fundamental Rights and international legal standards. Through an examination of legal frameworks, institutional reports, and recent operational data, the study assesses the Corps’ role in ensuring compliance with principles such as proportionality, non-discrimination, and non-refoulement. Furthermore, the paper discusses the mechanisms of accountability and oversight that accompany the deployment of Standing Corps officers, focusing on training, monitoring, and complaint-handling systems. These mechanisms aim to balance the operational needs of effective border control with the ethical and legal imperatives of human rights protection. The analysis concludes that the Standing Corps represents both an operational innovation and a normative test for the European Union. Its success depends not only on efficiency and coordination but also on maintaining transparency, democratic legitimacy, and a firm commitment to fundamental rights as cornerstones of EU action (Korontzis, 2022, c).A criação do Corpo Permanente no âmbito da Agência Europeia da Guarda de Fronteiras e Costeira (Frontex) representa um desenvolvimento significativo nos esforços da União Europeia para reforçar a gestão das suas fronteiras externas. INTELLIGENT STATISTICAL PROCESS CONTROL FOR ADVANCED FOOD PRODUCTION: CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS (SDGS)
Objective: This study demonstrates how applied statistical methods combined with artificial intelligence can enhance production control in food technology by improving product quality, reducing variability, and supporting data-driven industrial decision-making. Theoretical Framework: The research is grounded in Statistical Process Control (SPC), Shewhart’s classical quality control principles, and Industry 4.0 concepts integrating machine learning into industrial monitoring. Support Vector Machines (SVM), together with Random Forest and Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) models, are investigated as intelligent extensions of traditional control-chart-based SPC. Method: Classical Statistical Process Control (SPC) techniques based on X̄ and R control charts were integrated with supervised machine learning. Real production data from an industrial filling process producing nominal 80 g “Choco Flips” packages were analyzed. Control limits were analytically derived and implemented in Python. A Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier was trained on 300 samples using multiple kernel functions, with hyperparameter optimization performed via GridSearchCV and model evaluation based on cross-validation and ROC analysis. To assess robustness and comparative performance, additional supervised learning models, including Random Forest and Multilayer Perceptron (MLP), were also evaluated. Results and Discussion SPC analysis revealed intermittent special-cause variation in the X̄ chart, while the R chart indicated generally stable short-term variability. For predictive quality monitoring, the SVM with an RBF kernel achieved the highest and most consistent performance (accuracy ≈ 0.98, ROC AUC ≈ 0.92), confirmed through cross-validation and hyperparameter optimization. Random Forest and MLP models demonstrated comparable predictive accuracy, further validating the robustness of the proposed intelligent SPC framework. Research Implications: The integration of machine learning with SPC enables real-time anomaly detection, automated decision support, and reduced reliance on repetitive manual measurements, while maintaining reliable quality assurance. This real-time, intelligence-based SPC framework is particularly suitable for small and medium-sized food production enterprises seeking scalable and efficient quality-control solutions. Originality/Value: The study presents a practical and scalable intelligent SPC framework that integrates classical control charts with machine learning for predictive, real-time quality monitoring in regulated food production environments

THE POETİCS OF CİVİLİZATİON: FROM CONQUEST TO COLLAPSE İN ANDALUSİAN ARABİC POETRY
This study examines Andalusian Arabic poetry not merely within the framework of literary genres or chronological periods, but as an aesthetic locus of memory reflecting the emergence, maturation, and dissolution of a civilization. The study explores the intricate relationship between poetry, political power, social structure, and cultural identity across the historical trajectory spanning from the initial conquest in 711 to the fall of Granada in 1492. The research demonstrates that while the classical poetic tradition centered in the East remained dominant during the periods of conquest and initial organization, geographical nuances, emotionality, and local elements progressively permeated the poetry. It is revealed that during the Caliphate and the Muluk al-Tawa’if (Taifa) periods, poetry reached its aesthetic zenith, evolving into a discourse that legitimized political power through panegyrics, descriptive verses, and nature poetry. Furthermore, the study emphasizes that uniquely Andalusian genres such as the Muwashshah served as the poetic expression of a multicultural and multilingual societal structure. In the Nasrid period, it is identified that poetry was primarily shaped around themes of sorrow, loss, and melancholy; specifically, in the works of Abu al-Baqa al-Rundi and his successors, the transformation of Al-Andalus into a \u27civilization of memory\u27 is reflected as a form of aesthetic resistance. By making the interaction between political history and aesthetic consciousness visible, the study aims to demonstrate how a civilization is constructed and dissolved through a poetic memory

Advancements in culinary arts education emphasize active pedagogical strategies to foster innovative fusion cuisine skills, addressing the global gastronomy sector\u27s demand for cultural amalgamation and technological integration. This study investigates the effects of discovery learning augmented by self-regulated learning (SRL) on students\u27 creative competencies, focusing on digital incorporation in developing regions, to bridge gaps in traditional rote-based programs. A mixed-methods explanatory sequential design was employed with 135 fifth-semester culinary arts students at Universitas Negeri Medan. The quantitative phase used a quasi-experimental setup with block randomization into experimental (discovery learning, n=69) and control (traditional instruction, n=66) groups, assessing SRL via adapted MSLQ surveys and innovative skills through portfolio rubrics. The qualitative phase involved semi-structured interviews with 10 students and 5 instructors, analyzed thematically using NVivo. Discovery learning significantly enhanced SRL indicators and innovative fusion skills (mean scores: 87,5 vs. 74,6 for high SRL), with a notable interaction effect (F(2,129)=4,35, p=0,015, partial η²=0,068). Qualitative themes highlighted increased engagement, creativity (e.g., "Rendang Sushi"), SRL practices, and challenges like resource limitations and digital equity issues. Discovery learning, amplified by SRL, outperforms traditional methods in cultivating innovative fusion cuisine skills, with recommendations for scaffolding, institutional investments, and technology integration (e.g., VR/AI). Future research should explore longitudinal impacts and multinational contexts to enhance vocational culinary training

BUILDING ORGANIZATIONAL EXCELLENCE THROUGH KNOWLEDGE SHARING AND INNOVATION: THE CENTRAL ROLE OF COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE IN UNCERTAIN MANUFACTURING CONTEXTS
Purpose This study investigates the impact of knowledge sharing, innovation, environmental uncertainty, and quality culture on competitive advantage and manufacturing industry performance. It also examines how competitive advantage mediates the relationship between these factors and company performance. Grounded in theories of knowledge sharing, innovation, environmental uncertainty, and quality culture, this research develops a model incorporating these variables alongside competitive advantage and company performance. The relationships were analyzed quantitatively using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with Partial Least Squares (PLS) 4.0. The study focuses on large and medium-sized manufacturing companies in Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia. A total of 143 questionnaires were distributed, with 118 returned, achieving an 83% response rate. Structural equation modeling was employed to test the hypotheses. The results reveal that knowledge sharing, innovation, environmental uncertainty, and quality culture positively and significantly impact manufacturing industry performance. Similarly, knowledge sharing, innovation, and environmental uncertainty significantly enhance competitive advantage. However, while quality culture positively influences competitive advantage, its effect is not statistically significant. Furthermore, knowledge sharing, innovation, and environmental uncertainty indirectly improve performance through the mediating role of competitive advantage. In contrast, competitive advantage does not mediate the influence of quality culture on performance. This study is limited to Southeast Sulawesi’s manufacturing industries, suggesting a need for broader research across other regions to enhance generalizability. Practically, the findings underscore the importance of fostering knowledge sharing, innovation, and adaptability to environmental uncertainty, as well as embedding quality culture to strengthen competitive advantage and boost performance
