Consolidation: A Tale of Two Libraries

    No full text
This paper describes the initiating action, planning, adaptations, and official conclusion of a one-year consolidation of a professional health-sciences library with a largely commuter-student undergraduate liberal arts library, during the consolidation of their corresponding universities. Ties existed between some university programs, such as nursing, but the cultures of the two universities differed. The structure established to handle the consolidation allowed effective communication and cooperative development of policies and processes. Reaccreditation efforts also required extensive work to reflect the new university. Crucial lessons were learned from the intensive effort

Graphic Novels: A Brief History and Overview for Library Managers

    No full text
Graphic novels have long fought to gain literary recognition; however, as the struggle has unfolded, graphic novels have not only achieved this, but have also been recognized for their uses and applications within other disciplines as well. These books have overcome the medium’s criticisms of violence, sexual situations, and stereotypes of male power, and have earned their place in our society, and in libraries. As more libraries, both public and academic, integrate graphic novels into their collections, the potential for criticism and censorship attempts increases. Graphic novels deserve the same recognition and consideration for inclusion in libraries as other literary formats; therefore, library managers must have a basic understanding of the format in order to defend their inclusion in collections to critics

Collaboration in White Spaces: Librarians as Leaders in Evidence-Based Practice at CAM Institutions

    No full text
White Spaces were first described by organizational change expert Gary Rummler in the 1960’s to describe zones where meaningful action takes place outside of the normal chains of command dictated by organizational charts. This paper identifies key concepts for leadership in the white spaces as relationality, unanticipated organizational intention, intention to change and mutual purpose. Librarians serving nine Complementary and Alternative Medicine programs found themselves using white space leadership tactics to promote information literacy and evidence-based practice skills in the wake of receiving R25 grants from the National Institutes of Health. Their training as librarians paralleled the unique skills required for white space leadership and allowed them to create new opportunities for library integration into the curricula and programs of their institutions. Three case studies highlight the challenges of curriculum and cultural change at these schools and the synchronous opportunity for library involvement in those shifts

    Bringing Back "Innovation"

    No full text
Attending conferences and other development opportunities offer many benefits. They spark creativity and challenge attendees to reconsider how they currently do things back at their library. But the experience also presents a leadership risk. Bringing back too many new ideas or changes that do not work out well can damage one's credibility in leading future changes
