Outcomes of Blood Flow Restriction Training in Comparison to Traditional Strength Training in Patients Undergoing ACL Reconstruction
• ACL injuries are common in athletes and active individuals with a significant impact on knee stability, function and strength. The ACL is crucial in activities involving jumping, cutting, and pivoting which places the ligament under increased stress, increasing the risk of rupture. ACLR surgery is often necessary, especially in younger, active individuals, to restore knee stability, function and strength • The purpose of this literature review is to explore the effectiveness of BFR-RT as an alternative or adjuvant to traditional rehabilitation techniques following ACLR surgery. The electronic databases PubMed and Embase were searched, and the seven studies chosen for this review were randomized controlled trials published within the last five years • Current research findings suggest BFR-RT provides equal or superior benefits in quadriceps strength development, improved knee joint function, and decreased pain during the rehabilitation process. BFR-RT may also accelerate recovery and reduce the RTS time or physical activity while reducing the strain on healing tissues • Future research is essential to eliminate the gaps in current studies, such as the relevance of graft type, effects on adolescence and older adults, effects of BFR-RT prior to ACLR surgery and activity level prior to injury seem most important currentlyhttps://commons.und.edu/pas-grad-posters/1334/thumbnail.jp
PROMOTING WELLNESS IN COMMUNITY-DWELLING OLDER ADULTS: AN OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY APPROACH GUIDED BY THE EIGHT DIMENSIONS OF WELLNESS
Background: Wellness is a process where an individual intentionally makes choices to support a satisfying lifestyle and is aware of their choices (Swarbrick & Yudof, 2015). In the United States, unhealthy lifestyle choices and the high prevalence of chronic conditions negatively influence one’s health, wellness, and quality of life (Li et al., 2018). Additionally, age-related changes can negatively influence one’s overall well-being. Examples of age-related changes may include changes in strength, mobility, coordination, balance, gait, and cognitive functioning (Bello-Haas et al., 2018a; Bello-Haas et al., 2018b; Judge & Dawson, 2018). Occupational therapy\u27s role in health promotion and prevention includes promoting engagement in occupation and healthy lifestyles through health promotion strategies and occupation-based interventions (American Occupational Therapy Association [AOTA], 2020b).
Purpose: The purpose of this scholarly project was to develop a group protocol and wellness program to enhance the wellness, well-being, and knowledge of the Eight Dimensions of Wellness (Swarbrick & Yudof, 2015) for community-dwelling adults 55 and older.
Methods: This project began with a literature review that focused on community-based occupational therapy health and wellness promotion topics including current evidence-based practice guidelines in health and wellness promotion and occupational therapy’s role in this area of practice. The Model of Human Occupation (MOHO), the Eight Dimensions of Wellness, and the Geragogy learning theory were used to guide the development of the group protocol (Bastable et al., 2020; Kielhofner & Burke, 1980; Swarbrick & Yudof, 2015).
Results: The program includes two activities and an educational handout with action steps one can take to improve one\u27s wellness for each dimension of wellness. Each of the selected activities are meaningful, occupation-based, and evidence-based. A three-part evaluation process was also developed. The full product has not been implemented yet; however, the program is anticipated to enhance wellness and knowledge of the Eight Dimensions of Wellness (Swarbrick & Yudof, 2015).
Conclusion: This multi-dimensional wellness program provides education and occupation-based activities for the Eight Dimensions of Wellness (Swarbrick & Yudof, 2015). Additionally, group members will gain knowledge and opportunities to enhance skills in each dimension of wellness to enhance their overall well-being
D-Mannose Efficacy in Preventing Recurrent Urinary Tract Infections in Women
• Evaluate the efficacy, safety, and mechanisms of D-mannose, a natural sugar, in preventing and treating UTIs. Evidence from various studies, including randomized controlled trials and pilot research, indicates that D-mannose may reduce UTI recurrence rates and alleviate acute symptoms with comparable efficacy to standard antibiotics. • Recurrent urinary tract infections (rUTIs) are a significant health concern for women, affecting their quality of life and requiring effective and safe prophylactic and therapeutic interventions. • Daily D-mannose demonstrated a significant reduction in recurrence rates for prophylaxis compared to placebo and nitrofurantoin, with fewer adverse effects. • In acute UTI management, D-mannose-based supplements improved symptom resolution and achieved bacteriological clearance more effectively than placebo. • Mechanistically, D-mannose prevents uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) from adhering to bladder cells, interrupting infection progression without promoting bacterial resistance. • Limitations such as small sample sizes, lack of long-term follow-up, and variable study designs warrant further large-scale, blinded trials to establish standardized dosing regimens and confirm efficacy. • D-mannose represents a potential alternative or adjunct in UTI management, emphasizing a need for continued research into its clinical applications.https://commons.und.edu/pas-grad-posters/1335/thumbnail.jp
Improving Fertility in Women with Endometriosis
• Endometriosis is a common condition in women and has a strong association with infertility. The purpose of this systematic literature review is to determine the efficacy of hormonal therapy as compared to surgical therapy before assisted reproductive therapy (ART) on endometriosis-related infertility. • The electronic databases PubMed and Embase were searched from June 23, 2024, to January 4, 2025. Keywords used were associated with fertility, IVF, and endometriosis. Article selection was limited to research published after the year 2000 with a preference for randomized control trials (RCTs), although one pilot study and one clinical cohort study were also included. The search yielded 59 total articles. Exclusion criteria included lack of hard fertility endpoints including pregnancy rate or live birthrate, and any therapies that did not include either surgery or hormonal therapy in conjunction with ART. A total of seven articles were included in this review. • Reviewed literature indicates that prior to ART, both surgical cystectomy and prolonged gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) downregulation improves fertility outcomes in women with endometriosis. • Future research should be conducted to determine and compare those effects to guide clinical decision making for women experiencing infertility secondary to endometriosis.https://commons.und.edu/pas-grad-posters/1346/thumbnail.jp
The Effects of Screen Time on Cognitive Development in Early Childhood
Spending time on devices (screen time) has become normal in day-to-day life, however our understanding of how this may affect development in early childhood is not yet fully understood. This paper explores the relationship between screen time and early childhood cognitive development, utilizing a definition of cognitive development as the growth of how children think, learn, communicate, and develop an understanding about the things around them. Research findings so far indicate that there may be both positives and negatives with screen time. For example, a child’s screen time may be positively and negatively correlated to vocabulary and language development specifically, however not significantly correlated with early childhood cognitive development overall. Associations found thus far have been generally weak though, and studies indicate that multiple factors are likely at play. Further study is needed to better understand the relationship between screen time and early childhood cognitive development, particularly within the context of emerging technologies
Emotional Regulation in Adolescents, Its\u27 Link to Social Media, & Potential Solutions
This essay discusses emotional regulation in adolescents, and how social media has significant effects on its development. It also goes over potential solutions on how to fix irregular emotional dysregulation, and how society might be able to help prevent or teach adolescents to adapt emotional regulation to the modern digital landscape
