    Examining the Origins and Outcomes of Research-Related Emotions in Faculty: Developing the Research Emotions Questionnaire (REQ)

    University faculty experience many emotions that have implications for their research success; however, previous studies on research-related emotions in faculty have consistently employed self-report measures with limited validity, reliability, and scope. The current study aimed to validate the Research Emotions Questionnaire (REQ) among STEM faculty, examine potential differences in emotions by demographic and job-related factors, and test a hypothesized model of emotions as predictors of faculty research success based on Pekrun’s control-value theory (CVT). An online survey was completed by 611 STEM faculty from 10 research-intensive US universities, with the data showing the REQ to be valid and reliable. Women reported more anxiety and disappointment, underrepresented minorities reported more anxiety, and full professors reported more enjoyment and pride, as well as less anxiety and disappointment, compared to junior colleagues. Structural equation modeling results showed perceived control and value appraisals significantly predicted research emotions and, in turn, self-reported research success. Negative binomial regressions revealed enjoyment, boredom, disappointment, and frustration as significant predictors of bibliometric counts of publications and citations. The REQ is an improved tool for understanding faculty research emotions, with implications for developing targeted emotional regulation programs to enhance faculty well-being, success, and job satisfaction, particularly for underrepresented groups

    Utilizing an Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Model to Predict Colorectal Cancer Risk in American Samoa: A Pilot Study

    Objective: This pilot study aimed to assess the feasibility of using an artificial Intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) model to predict colorectal cancer (CRC) risk in American Samoa, where resource limitations and cultural barriers significantly hinder screening efforts. Methods: The AI/ML model used complete blood count (CBC) results, along with age and gender, to predict CRC risk. A retrospective analysis was conducted on data from 6,025 individuals aged 50 and above from the Lyndon Baines Johnson Tropical Medical Center’s electronic health records. Of these, 62 participants were identified as high-risk for CRC based on the AI/ML model. The study also incorporated the methylated Septin 9 (mSept9) biomarker as an alternative, less invasive screening method for CRC detection. Participants were contacted for follow-up CRC screening, which included colonoscopy, fecal immunochemical testing (FIT), or mSEPT9 blood testing. Results: The AI/ML model identified 62 high-risk participants. However, only four participants returned for further testing, and just one agreed to a colonoscopy. The colonoscopy result revealed a benign polyp and low hemoglobin levels in the participant with the highest risk score. mSEPT9 levels were elevated in this participant, indicating the potential utility of this biomarker for early CRC detection. Despite promising results, the model’s validation was limited due to low participation in follow-up screening. Conclusion: This study demonstrates the potential of AI/ML models for predicting CRC risk in resource-limited and culturally diverse populations like American Samoa. However, significant barriers, including cultural, financial, and logistical factors, limit patient follow-up and the broader implementation of these technologies. Future research should focus on addressing these barriers, enhancing community engagement, and integrating culturally appropriate interventions to improve CRC screening and outcomes in underserved populations

    Thermodynamic Evaluation Of The Thermal Methane Pyrolysis Process

    Natural gas flaring is a persistent challenge which undermines global sustainability and decarbonization efforts as it leads to the waste of valuable energy resources alongside the release of harmful greenhouse gases into the environment. Even when natural gas is utilized through commonly adopted pathways, significant emission of carbon dioxide tends to be realized. Methane pyrolysis offers a promising route in which methane can be decomposed into solid carbon and hydrogen gas with no direct CO2 emissions. However, despite extensive studies of the methane pyrolysis process, a fundamental thermodynamic rationale of the process behavior remains insufficiently explored. This study 1) develops a fundamental thermodynamic framework to explain fully the mechanisms driving the thermal methane pyrolysis (TMP) process, 2) isolates and quantifies the enthalpy(∆H) and entropy (T∆S) contributions to process spontaneity and conversion, and 3) thermodynamically rationalizes prevalent process optimization strategies. Results confirm the TMP process to be endothermic and entropy-driven, with temperature as the dominant driver of the process through amplification of the T∆S term, while pressure suppresses spontaneity via entropy reduction. The optimal operating regime was found to be at 900 °C, 1 bar, where methane conversion reaches ~94%, after which diminishing energy returns were observed. The optimal operating regime was observed to change to 1200 °C, 1 bar with the implementation of heat recovery. The thermodynamic analysis validated the adoption of current process configurations as preheating and heat recovery were found to minimize external heat duty, and reactor insulation maintained the entropy-driven conditions that favor conversion. This work bridges the gap between fundamental thermodynamics and practical engineering, providing a foundational baseline for more complex models and analysis

    Geochemical Characterization For Underground Hydrogen Storage (UHS) In North Dakota\u27s Red River Formation

    Hydrogen is advancing as a low-carbon energy carrier, necessitating storage to buffer supply-demand variability. Previous Underground Hydrogen Storage studies have not integrated experimental, geochemical, and numerical modeling approaches in a single investigation. This study integrates laboratory mineralogy, geochemical modeling and compositional simulation to assess underground hydrogen storage feasibility in North Dakota. Two settings were evaluated: depleted Red River carbonate reservoirs and an Inyan Kara sandstone aquifer. Thirty-seven core plugs underwent X-ray Diffraction/X-ray Fluorescence/Scanning Electron Microscopy characterization. Batch geochemical models (3,600 days) quantified hydrogen-rock-brine interactions. Field-scale simulations for Red River (~220 °F, ~3,000 psi) applied cyclic injection-withdrawal over 1,827 days (three cycles) and 10,950 days (three cycles) with hysteresis, diffusion and cushion-gas sensitivities. Carbonates are calcite-dolomite-anhydrite, the aquifer is calcite-quartz-plagioclase. Phases remained stable (SI ≤ 0) with no hydrogen sulfide or pyrite, implying negligible reaction-driven porosity/permeability change. Operational targets were met (injection ~5.43x10^5 scf/d; production ~1.11x10^6 scf/d). Decadal cycling yielded ˃96% recovery (unrecovered ≤3.6%). The aquifer achieved highest recovery but most water production. Cushion gas enhanced injectivity and sustained deliverability. Collectively, the integrated evidence indicates low-reactivity, technically viable underground hydrogen storage in North Dakota and provides decision-grade inputs for pilot design, risk management, and scale-up
