Targeted Coaching In The Detroit Promise Path: A Thematic Network Analysis Of Current Challenges And Opportunities For Student Success
The Detroit Promise Program is one of the many college promise programs operating within the United States that offers full college tuition coverage to students within the city who meet certain residential criteria. Detroit’s population has one of the highest proportions of Black and first-generation students and the lowest average socioeconomic class in the country. From the time of the Promise Program’s launch until now it has seen minor improvements in college degree competition rates, but this rate is still low compared to the national average. The Detroit Promise Path, which is an off branch of the Detroit Promise Program, offers coaching components and observes some improvements to the Detroit Promise Program in terms of retention rates and degree completion. These improvements suggest that increasing engagement with students could aid in improving retention even further. Currently there is not much consistency with coaching between the schools participating in the program.
This dissertation provides review of research-based support practices for the three main demographics of Detroit—Black, low-income, and first-generation students. My research compares evidence-based support practices with what the Promise Path coaches and students share about their experiences with coaching in the program. I then provide potential areas for improvement for coaching procedures in the program, which is based on the interview data that offered insights into support that is not being covered in the current coaching practices. Using past research, I offer suggestions as to how coaches might improve their support based on the identified areas of opportunity
Script to Sans: The Shift Toward Minimalist Branding
It has become common for companies to do rebrands from more detailed, complex branding to simple and bold branding. With lettering, there has been a trend of companies shifting from script to sans serif typefaces. This pattern brought us to the question, why? It’s important to understand trends in graphic design like this one to get a better grasp of marketing strategies and consumer preferences. It’s also good practice as graphic designers to stay up to date with social and cultural shifts, so we can apply that knowledge and make smart design choices. While there isn’t much research on this change in particular, there is some on individual cases of rebranding, which is what we developed this project around. Specifically, the project focuses on 16 different case studies of companies that have rebranded from script to sans serif typefaces. The case studies explore the history of the selected brands and their logos, focusing on why they switched their branding. Three commonalities developed across the reasoning, one being a change in the company body (such as a shift in ownership), the second being a change to keep up with modern technology and trends, and the third being an outlier case, found with Pinterest. This outlier case was due to the lack of specific reasoning behind their logo and branding switch. It’s important to continue investigating changes in branding so we can learn from these instances how people interact with certain styles of graphic design and use that understanding in our own work.https://commons.und.edu/as-showcase/1026/thumbnail.jp

Disparities in GDMT in Rural and Underserved HFrEF Patients
Heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) continues to be a substantial public health challenge, thus optimal management through guideline-directed medical therapy (GDMT) continues to be vital. Evolving GDMT has established four pillars of first-line optimal treatment with expeditious and maximized titration of established target dosing of pillar medications. GDMT has been shown to decrease mortality among HF patients. Although continuing advancements in treatment efficacy prevail, studies demonstrate that vulnerable populations, particularly rural, Black and Hispanic individuals, exhibit significantly lower rates of GDMT optimization, leading to increased hospitalization and mortality. This literature review evaluates disparities in GDMT implementation among urban, rural and underserved populations, and underlines how geographical isolation, socioeconomic factors, and demographics influences treatment outcomes. This literature review reveals that remote monitoring and telemedicine, particularly in rural settings, show the potential to mitigate these disparities through enhanced access to care. Searches were concluded using the electronic databases Pubmed and Embase yielding 13 articles of significance. The findings demonstrate a notable difference in the optimization of GDMT when comparing urban vs rural or underserved populations and includes statistically significant disparities with suboptimal GDMT in rural populations. This is compounded by higher HF hospitalizations in underserved populations regardless of geography, underscoring the necessity of a multidisciplinary model. Despite established GDMT, multifactorial disparities exists between urban, rural, and underserved populations with regards to HFrEF treatment. While additional research is needed, increased engagement and fluency amongst primary care providers as well as remote technologies may bridge the treatment gaphttps://commons.und.edu/pas-grad-posters/1352/thumbnail.jp
Efficacy of Stem Cell Therapy Versus Standard Drug Therapy in Adults with Heart Failure
Myocardial infarction (MI) or other damage to the heart tissue may result in ischemia, and because cardiomyocytes have limited regenerative capacity, this often leads to the development of heart failure (HF). Typical symptoms of HF include dyspnea, edema, cough, fatigue, and chest pain, which arises from fluid overload and congestion. Current medical treatments focus on alleviating these symptoms through loop diuretics, which reduce fluid accumulation but do not treat the underlying ischemic damage. Recent studies have shifted focus towards stem cell therapy, which have shown potential to differentiate into cardiomyocytes and regenerate ischemic heart tissue. A comprehensive search of databases resulted in eight total articles that met inclusion criteria. This literature review explores the current standard drug therapy, the efficacy of stem cell therapy, and the combination of drug therapy and stem cell therapy in the treatment of heart failure. Despite these promising findings, further research is necessary to establish stem cell-based therapies as a viable treatment option for HF.https://commons.und.edu/pas-grad-posters/1350/thumbnail.jp
Efficacy of Turmeric in the Treatment of Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is one of the most common types of arthritis that affects millions of people worldwide. This is a progressive disease, one that comes from persistent use of one’s joints. Currently, treatment of this disease includes oral NSAIDs, acetaminophen, corticosteroids, corticosteroid injections, oral and topical analgesics. These medications do have some long-term effects impacting the cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and hepatic systems. A literature review was completed using randomized controlled, placebo controlled, and double-blind studies that emphasized the addition of turmeric to the treatment of osteoarthritis and its effects on pain, serum inflammatory markers, and physical functionality. Nine articles were found from both PubMed and Embase that fit inclusion criteria of clinical studies, controlled clinical trials, randomized controlled trial, observational studies, and publication after the year of 2017. The results of this review confirm that the addition of turmeric will reduce daily pain, decrease serum inflammatory markers, and help increase physical functionality due to decreased pain.https://commons.und.edu/pas-grad-posters/1347/thumbnail.jp

The Watrous data set is the corrected version of the normal vowel data from Peterson and Barney 1954. The output is an editable plot
The Impact of Structured Feedback and Evaluation Systems on Clinical Preceptor Performance and Student Satisfaction in Medical Laboratory Science Programs
Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) students\u27 education heavily relies on clinical practicum experiences to bridge the gap between theory and practice. Knowledgeable clinical preceptors are vital for engaging and inspiring learning and enabling students to interact within authentic clinical environments involving laboratory peers, patients, and healthcare providers. This literature review explores the impact of implementing a structured feedback and evaluation system for clinical preceptors in medical laboratory science (MLS) programs, highlighting its influence on student satisfaction and preceptor performance. The databases utilized for this literature review include PubMed and CINAHL. Due to a profound lack of published literature available additional healthcare fields were included within the search. Additional articles were sourced from examining the citations of the articles found during the initial database search. The review emphasizes the importance of formal preceptor training which directly correlates with preceptor competency, and the preparedness of students entering the workforce. Secondary themes included the need for clearly defined roles and responsibilities of the preceptor and understanding preceptors’ perceptions. The lack of published laboratory specific research further supports the need for exploration on clinical preceptor training and evaluation programs and how investments in preceptor training will result in competent and educated emerging laboratorians
Cicadian Rhythms: The 2024 Cicada Emergence
In Cicadian Rhythms, Farah Davis recounts the rare 2024 dual emergence of cicada broods XIII and XIX, which appeared weeks early due to climate change. She explains how cicadas use tree sap and soil temperature to time their emergence, and how warming trends are disrupting these ancient cycles. The essay blends personal observation with scientific insight, showing how even backyard phenomena reflect broader environmental shifts. Davis emphasizes the ecological importance of cicadas and the cascading effects of climate disruption on ecosystems. Ultimately, she calls for greater awareness and stewardship in the face of accelerating climate change
