    Evaluation of Residents’Accessibility and Utilization of Healthcare Facilities in Oko-Ito Gberigbe, Ikorodu Local Government Area, Lagos State, Nigeria

    This study evaluated the accessibility and utilization of healthcare facilities in Ikorodu Local Government Area of Lagos State, Nigeria. The World Health Organization emphasized the importance of healthy living, therefore, it becomes imperative for major stakeholders especially the Government, to ensure the availability of ultramodern healthcare facilities with adequate medical personnel and ensure equitable access by the residents. Socio-economic status of the residents, their location and accessibility are some of the factors identified that influence the residents’ use of the healthcare facility. For the purpose of this research, primary data was collected by random administration of questionnaire and direct interview of residents in Oko-Ito, Gberigbe, Ikorodu. The population of the study area is projected from 3,550 in 2015 to 4,035 in 2019 using the projection formula with a population growth rate of 3.2 percent. With the aid of SPSS, the data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Demographic features of the respondents such as gender, age, level of education and occupation were taken into consideration, and a bulk of the population of the respondents affirm that the utilization of the available healthcare facility, despite its distance from the study area, is greatly influenced by the fact that it is owned by the Government – a Primary Health Center located at Igbalu community with a walking distance of over 1km from the study area. The influencing factor for the utilization of this healthcare facility was evaluated using the Usage Factor Index (UFI) with ‘quality of staff’ having the highest coefficient followed by ‘nature of illness.’ ‘Proximity to home’ has the lowest coefficient followed by ‘good road network.’ The UFI values indicate the need for a standard healthcare facility in Oko-Ito community, and it is highly recommended for community leaders to reach out to all relevant stakeholders including religious bodies and Non-Governmental Organizations both at local and state level to help in building accessible health care facility in this community

    Chemical and Sensory Comparison of Classical and Alternative Systems for the Ageing of Wine Distillate

    The chemical components were quantified in artificially aged (with oak chips) and barrel-aged wine distillate. These components belong to various chemical families, including aldehydes (acetaldehyde, propionic aldehyde, furfural, coniferaldehyde, synapaldehyde), higher alcohols (methanol, ethanol, 1-Propanol, butanol, isobutanol, amyl alcohol, isoamyl alcohol, 1-hexanol), volatile acids (ethanoic acid, propionic acid, 3-methylbutanoic acid, hexanoic acid, heptanoic acid, octanoic acid) and esters (methyl formate, ethyl acetate, butyl butyrate, methyl butyrate). Chemical analysis was performed by classical methods of analytical chemistry. During the seven month aging process all the chemical components were affected by ageing systems. The analysis of alcoholic strength by volume, aldehydes and volatile acids showed a great discrimination of the brandies based on the ageing system. The loss of alcohol was lower in a glass vessel with oak chips than in oak wood barrel. Thus, artificial ageing is cost-efficient method than the classical one. Moreover, the ageing system affected the sensory profile of the wine distillates as well. The present study demonstrated that alternative ageing up to five months is the most promising technology to get desirable colour. However, traditional wine spirit ageing method is preferable to produce high quality brandy compared to alternatives as spirit aged in Limousin oak barrels are more matured than the one aged with oak chips

    Flexural Tensile Strength of Asphalt Composites with Calcined Clay under Four-Point Bending

    Replacing natural aggregates for employment in pavement applications has been exhaustively proposed in order to reduce the unsustainable consumption of these materials. An option widely studied in the Amazon Region is the Sintered Calcined Clay Aggregate (SCCA), a promising alternative to the historical scarcity of rocky material, given the region geology, primarily for the strong occurrence of clays. The aim of this research is to study the use of calcined clay aggregates to create an alternative mixture for asphalt coating of urban paved roads. The influence of temperature variation on the mechanical behavior of SCCA asphalt concrete was also evaluated in order to simulate high-temperature zones. Four-point bending tests were performed on prismatic specimens compacted in controlled conditions with the aim to determine the Flexural Tensile Strength. Superpave method was used for the design of asphalt mixes. The test results from this study indicated that the FTS increases with frequency and decreases with temperature. On the other hand, increasing temperature promotes a tendency of stabilization of the FTS, in which the saturation of the asphalt binder can be observed, due to its viscoelastic nature

    Recovery of Zn2+, Fe2+ and Mn2+ from Some Selected Edible Vegetables and Pumpkin using Modified Maize Cobs

    This study reports on the pre-concentration of some essential trace elements from vegetables using modified maize cobs by sorption. This was enabled by some functional groups anchored within the chemical structure of the material. Modification was achieved by treating the dry powdered material with thionylchloride (SOCl2) which was dispersed in dimethylformaldehyde (DMF) then reacting with ethylenediamine air drying the resultant for 24 hours. The presence of the anchored group was confirmed by FT-IR and it was used for Batch sorption experiments. The effect of pH, concentration, and dosage on the adsorption of zinc, iron and manganese ion by the parent and modified materials were carried out. Using the optimal parameters, the modified material was used for the pre-concentration of the trace metal ions from solutions of some selected vegetables samples. Pre-concentration of nutrients from fermented samples showed significantly high levels than non-fermented samples. This new method of pre-concentrating metal ions shows promising results and can improve the nutrition value in the preparation of dietary supplements. The method is effective and is of low cost

    Single-use plastic products design has been one of the cleverest and efficient plastic design achievements of the last decades of the twentieth century. New, simple, inexpensive and innovative solutions based on the flexibility of the technologically advanced plastics found wider applications in the everyday lives of millions of people around the world. Nevertheless, the bliss of these economic, handy products-miracles of the ever-growing global technology soon became a nightmare as all the plastic that has ever been produced has never been totally biodegraded and is still in some form on the planet. Although we use them for a few minutes, they can stay in the environment for hundreds of years. Our dependence on single-use plastics has now become unmanageable, and plastic pollution is everywhere: from our body through the food chain to the more remote beaches and uninhabited islands. This article aims to examine not only the advantages of single-use plastic product design, but also to point out their serious defaults, such as environmental pollution and discuss the possible measures to be taken by several public and state bodies, especially EU, who intend to protect people, economy and the planet itself

    Repellent Activity of Certain Plant Extracts (Clove, Coriander, Neem and Mint) Against Red Flour Beetle

    Various insect acts as pests for crops and storage grains that cause lot of damage and economic losses. Common control agents are synthetic compounds that are unsafe for humans and environment. Certain parts of plants and herbs are historically used for their repellent activity against insects for grain storage and tree protection. In this context, this study was planned to investigate the repellent activity of extracts of clove, coriander, neem and mint against red flour beetle that cause damage to storage grains and other crops. Insect repellency was tested using multiple concentrations of the extracts. Results of this study demonstrated that these plant extracts proved to have effective repellent activity against the insect. The most effective extract was coriander followed by mint in various concentrations. 1.5 % concentration was found to be most effective. It is concluded from the results that these plants are natural sources of repellent material and hence are a potential source of natural / biological insect repellents

    The biggest debate in the last decade has been how a rising China will affect the world order. Some have said China will seek to overhaul the system as it is (revisionist) while others have argued that China has thrived under the current system therefore it would be foolhardy to overhaul a system that has led to her rise. Revisionist or status quo, what has come to the fore and especially with the rise of Donald Trump, China’s rise has a lot of implications. This paper seeks to employ liberalist thoughts to add into the debate. We argue that, China will seek to gain more say in global issues within the realm of institutions and not direct hard power. Completion will be there, but with rules governed by institutions, hence China will seek to use and shape these rules to better her position

    Possible Solutions of Water Pollution Control for Chindwin River and Major Lakes in Monywa

    This paper focuses on proposed possible solutions for water pollution control in Chindwin River and major lakes in Monywa. Field investigation and questionnaire survey were conducted to gather information about pollution sources in the previous study. The questionnaire set including eight questions being prepared according to five-point Likert rating scale, had been designed based on guidelines for Tanzania National Environmental Management Council (TNEMC). The responses from the survey were analysed by descriptive analysis, relative importance index (RII) and H statistic test. Water quality assessment on urban river water and lake water were performed. Municipal wastewater, industrial wastewater, illegal open dump of solid waste and agricultural waste were identified as major pollution sources of urban river and major lakes in previous study. Therefore, the possible solutions such as decentralized wastewater treatment (constructed wetlands, stabilization pond and bioretention), in-lake treatment techniques, soft engineering techniques and integrated solid waste management are proposed based on literature, secondary academic sources such papers, journals and other sources

    Module Definition for Drainage Runoffs Considering Climatic and Soil Conditions of the Kolkheti Lowland

    The present article describes existing methods of calculating a drainage runoff module, their values are compared with those of the countries of Europe, USA and Russia. Parallels are drawn between the climatic and soil conditions of the Great Britain and the Kolkheti lowland. In view of the above and according to the experimental data the following conclusion was made implying that a value of the drainage runoff design module for the conditions of the Kolkheti lowland requires to be increased.
