    Get PDF
The spatial and temporal variability of rainfall is a major constraint for the development of socio-economic activities in Burkina Faso. The objective of this work is to study the spatial and temporal dynamics of rainfall across the country in order to guide policy measures for major disaster management. The methodology is based on the mapping of statistical metrics calculated on time series of annual cumulated rainfall from CHIRPS data and the annual number of rainy days estimated by the ANAM over the period 1991-2020. The results indicate an average variability in rainfall over the 1991-2020 normal. The persistence of drought in the Far West is accompanied by a loss of rainfall. The approach based on the two data sources presents similar information for the assessment of rainfall variability, complementary for the estimated rainfall trend areas, and the frequency of drought and contradictory for assessing the frequency of wet years

An Enhanced Model for the Hydrodynamic Drag Force on a Steadily Translating Circular Cylinder

    Get PDF
A model for the hydrodynamic drag force on a steadily translating circular cylinder was studied for Reynolds number, Re << 1. Though the literature appears vast especially by method of rigorous asymptotic analysis, this work attempts to remove the mathematical complexity of asymptotic analysis by solving the Navier – Stokes equations directly to obtain the fluid velocity and then proceed to obtain the drag force and finally the drag coefficient which is a function of the Reynolds number. The result of this work is in complete agreement with the results in literature. &nbsp

The aimed of this study was to assess the performance of pupils in terms of ICT integration in teaching science in Grade IV-VI learners in Malaban Elementary School Biñan City, Laguna, and their disparity between the level of ICT integration in teaching and non-integration of ICT. In this analysis, the quantitative quasi-experimental method was used. The hypotheses for independent and dependent samples are tested using the t-test. The results revealed that ICT Integration in teaching Science 4,5, & 6 were effective than Non-ICT Integration based on the mean scores performance of the learners’ formative test and posttest which can be implied that the academic performance of the learners with ICT integration is much better than that of the non-ICT incorporated learners . Based on the result that the mean quality measures of the two classes of the learners are differently highly significant on their formative test and posttest. The results also revealed that in terms of pretest and posttest of experimental group found highly significance while for the comparison group found not significantly different except for GRADE IV found slightly significant. The authors proposed exploring the use of ICT in the incorporation of the other subjects related to the use of ICT in Science. They also recommend to the school heads that the teachers have as much as possible continuous training and seminars to enhance the skills and confidence of the teacher in using the technology

Offset of Carbon Emissions Due to Energy Use in Hospitals via Reforestation in Abandoned Mines. A Case Study in Chania, Crete, Greece

    Get PDF
Climate change mitigation requires the reduction of fossil fuels used in energy generation and their replacement with carbon-free energy sources. Carbon offsetting is a carbon removal option that can be achieved with several schemes including carbon sequestration by tree plantations. The possibility of offsetting part of carbon emissions due to energy use in the public hospital of Chania is investigated in the current research. The annual energy consumption in the hospital has been estimated at 12,840 MWh/year while its annual carbon emissions, due to energy use at 7,904 tnCO2/year. Several benign energy systems using renewable energies and low carbon energy technologies can be used to reduce its annual footprint. Reforestation of degraded land is an accepted method for offsetting carbon emissions via carbon sequestration. Reforestation of abandoned mines in an area at 100 ha in Prefecture of Chania can remove 1,000 tnCO2 annually corresponding at 12.65% of its total annual carbon emissions. The total cost of reforestation was evaluated at $ 250,000 while various external environmental and social co-benefits will be generated. It is indicated that nature-based solutions like reforestation of degraded land can be successfully used with affordable cost for offsetting part of carbon emissions in the public hospital of Chania. &nbsp

    Get PDF
In recent years, the field of research around the congestion problem of 4G and 5G networks has grown, especially those based on artificial intelligence (AI). Although 4G with LTE is seen as a mature technology, there is a continuous improvement in the infrastructure that led to the emergence of 5G networks. As a result of the large services provided in industries, Internet of Things (IoT) applications and smart cities, which have a large amount of exchanged data, a large number of connected devices per area, and high data rates, have brought their own problems and challenges, especially the problem of congestion. In this context, artificial intelligence (AI) models can be considered as one of the main techniques that can be used to solve network congestion problems. Since AI technologies are able to extract relevant features from data and deal with huge amounts of data, the integration of communication networks with AI to solve the congestion problem appears promising, and the research requires exploration. This paper provides a review of how AI technologies can be used to solve the congestion problem in 4G and 5G networks. We examined previous studies addressing the problem of congestion in networks, such as congestion prediction, congestion control, congestion avoidance, and TCP development for congestion control. Finally, we discuss the future vision of using AI technologies in 4G and 5G networks to solve congestion problems and identify research issues that need further study
