Experimental performance evaluation of self-consumption photovoltaic system with energy storage using TRNSYS
The optimal sizing of a Photovoltaic Battery System (PVBS) is a critical challenge due to the large number of parameters that can affect their optimization. It is sometimes difficult to recreate some experimental circumstances due to limitations presented in real prototypes. Consequently, a PVBS simulation model was created, and the anti-dumping mechanism was implemented in the software TRNSYS (Transient System Simulation Tool). Subsequently, experimental data obtained from a real system were used for validation through an error metric approach, in which the deviation of the measured and simulated values of the system in terms of final energy accumulated during the entire test was evaluated.
The accuracy of the model was mainly affected by the fixed simulation step since the energy variability was imperceptible due to the sensitivity of the model, and the programming of some components, which overlooked aspects such as the connection between photovoltaic panels, the variability of energy efficiency, and the operating voltage levels during the operation of the system components.
However, the trend of measured and simulated results was similar during the tests, obtaining mean absolute error values of approximately 4.00 kWh/day for the charged/discharged energy in the battery and the generated energy, and mean relative error values below 10.00 % in all cases, 3.07 % in the solar generated energy, 3.81 % in the discharged energy from the battery and 8.85 % in the charged energy in the battery. Thus, it was demonstrated that the use of TRNSYS to simulate a model of a grid-interconnected battery PV system with the implementation of the anti-dumping mechanism was satisfactory, allowing ad infinitum testing and control of a larger number of variables. We would like to thank the Regional Government of Extremadura for the support of research groups GR21021)peerReviewe
Reading between the lines: analisys of the critical recption of El mercader de Venecia by Nicolás González Ruiz (Teatro español, 1947)
The present work sheds light on the reception of the Spanish version of The Merchant of Venice, premiered in Madrid in 1947, critically analysing unexplored archival material: the theatre reviews published in the press. It follows the methodological framework chosen by Prescott (2013) for the study of the English reception of Shakespeare’s plays, highlighting the mediating nature of theatre reviews and the need to read their subtext. The discoursive strategies used by different critics subject to the press law and theatrical censorship are analyzed when addressing a central theme of the text, the contrast between the Christian and Jewish universes, in the context of the New Spanish National Catholic State, where the myth of the Judeo-Masonic-Bolshevik collusion and the need to show an open spirit coexisted, after the defeat of the Axis countries in the Second World War.peerReviewe
Reading comprehension in adolescent students with intellectual disabilities: the effect of seductive details in the process of inference formation
Students with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are increasing in prevalence and they show variety of difficulties and necessities in educational environments. Regarding reading comprehension, they usually suffer difficulties in inference making. To overcome them, visual supports are frequently provided. Nevertheless, the degree in which the use of images with seductive content could affect inference making and task processing is unknown. The ‘seductive details effect’ states that seductive images (interesting yet irrelevant) hamper comprehension. The present study aims to prove if this effect occurs in students with ASD. Thus, a sample of 7 adolescents with ASD read 27 texts, 9 of them with a seductive image, 9 with a relevant one and 9 without image, both in digital and pencil-paper environments. Results suggest that processing time of the task increased due to seductive images while it decreased with relevant ones, versus absence of image. However, performance was not significantly affected by presence nor type of image. This has important implications in the field of education, especially regarding attention to diversity, identification and elimination of barriers and promotion of inclusive education.peerReviewe
Performance dynamics in professional padel: winners, forced errors, and unforced errors among men and women players
The study aimed to analyse the number of satisfactory shots, the effectiveness of the last shot, and the winners, forced errors, and unforced errors in men’s and women’s professional padel. Data were collected from 41 professional matches at the World Padel Tour Finland Padel Open tournament, focusing on variables such as “set result, effectiveness and typology of the last shot, and number of successful shots”. Descriptive and inferential analyses, including chi-square tests and Z-tests with Bonferroni corrections, were performed. Results indicate that in the men’s padel, the serving pair wins more points than the returning pair. Similarly, in the women’s padel, the serving pair generally wins more points, but in long rallies (20+ shots), the returning pair wins slightly more. A significant association exists between the type of shot and its effectiveness in both winning and losing pairs (p < 0.001). In both men’s and women’s padel, smashes (24.6%–45.7%), bandejas (12.6%–20.2%), and volleys (24.0%–36.0%) are the most effective shots to secure winners. Backhand volleys (18.3%–25.1%) account for the most forced errors, while the most unforced errors are made with bandejas (19.2%–27.0%). These findings are crucial for coaches and players, helping to tailor training to improve match performance based on shot type and sex.peerReviewe
Nicknames have been associated with several sports across different countries and languages for a long time; thus, their use by a number of English football clubs is not surprising. Frequently, these sobriquets are culturally bound to the origins or history of these soccer teams along with their fans. Some previous research has focused on the analysis of the use of cognomens in sports, but no recent study has been carried out in the area of English football clubs. This paper intends to provide data on the employment of agnomens referring to English football teams participating in the Premier League during the 2023-2024 season in the particular context of the Spanish digital press. It uses the anglicisms search tool ‘Observatorio Lázaro’ to excerpt real media examples from various Spanish online newspapers from April 2020 up to February 2024. A qualitative and quantitative analysis of the sample reveals that Spanish news reporters tend to use many of the examined cognomens to refer to English football clubs. The motivations that encourage Spanish journalists to employ these English nicknames are discussed considering some pragmatic linguistic functions of these sobriquets. Breeding “Alnus” species for resistance to “Phytophthora” disease in the Iberian Peninsula
Alders are widely distributed riparian trees in Europe, North Africa and Western Asia. Recently, a strong reduction of alder stands has been detected in Europe due to infection by “Phytophthora” species (Stramenopila kingdom). This infection causes a disease known as alder dieback, characterized by leaf yellowing, dieback of branches, increased fruit production, and bark necrosis in the collar and basal part of the stem. In the Iberian Peninsula, the drastic alder decline has been confirmed in the Spanish Ulla and Ebro basins, the Portuguese Mondego and Sado basins and the Northern and Western transboundary hydrographic basins of Miño and Sil, Limia, Douro and Tagus. The damaging effects of alder decline require management solutions that promote forest resilience while keeping genetic diversity. Breeding programs involve phenotypic selection of asymptomatic individuals in populations where severe damage is observed, confirmation of tree resistance via inoculation trials under controlled conditions, vegetative propagation of selected trees, further planting and assessment in areas with high disease pressure and different environmental conditions and conservation of germplasm of tolerant genotypes for reforestation. In this way, forest biotechnology provides essential tools for the conservation and sustainable management of forest genetic resources, including material characterization for tolerance, propagation for conservation purposes, and genetic resource traceability, as well as identification and characterization of “Phytophthora” species. The advancement of biotechnological techniques enables improved monitoring and management of natural resources by studying genetic variability and function through molecular biology methods. In addition, “in vitro” culture techniques make possible large-scale plant propagation and long-term conservation within breeding programs to preserve selected outstanding genotypes. This work has been funded by MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033/EuropeanUnion “NextGenerationEU”/PRTR (TED2021-130790B-C31 and TED2021-130790B-C32), by Junta de Comunidades de Castilla-La Mancha/EU-FEDER (SBPLY/21/180501/000258), by the Directorate General of Biodiversity Forest and Desertification from the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge through the National Rural Development Program 2014-2020 which is co-financed by 75% from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (FEADER) and by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (Forest Research Centre by UIDP/00239/2020 and UIDB/00239/2020; Associate Laboratory TERRA by LA/P/0092/2020; MARE by UIDP/04292/2020 and UIDB/04292/2020, ARNET by LA/P/0069/ 2020, and VF by CEECIND/02484/2018).peerReviewe

Exploring video game engagement, social–emotional development, and adolescent well-being for sustainable health and quality education
This study addresses the relationship between the use of video games and social–emotional learning in adolescents, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations, highlighting SDG 3 (Health and Well-being) and SDG 4 (Quality Education). The Video Game Experiences Questionnaire (VGEQ) was administered to 1146 high school students in Extremadura,
Spain, aged 12 to 18 (M = 14.51; SD = 1.57). The VGEQ assessed dependence, negative consequences, and emotional experiences. The results highlighted significant gender differences, with men showing greater dependence and negative consequences related to video games than women. Furthermore, differences were observed by age, with more notable effects in late adolescents. A valuation was found between emotions such as unhappiness, fear, and anger and dependence and negative consequences. This study highlights the complex relationship between video game use, dependence, negative consequences, and emotions in adolescents, with important implications for the well-being and education of young people. Recognizing gender and age disparities underscores the need for a nuanced approach to addressing the social–emotional effects of video games in line with the United Nations SDGs 3 and 4.peerReviewe

Applicability of the multifactor dimensionality reduction methodology to the analysis of variables in sanitary buildings
In order to optimise engineering activities, it is necessary to analyse a large amount of data and variables. The objective is to implement MDR to better address the study and propose improvements to reduce energy consumption in Extremadura's health centres. These numerous variables do not have direct and quantifiable interactions on energy consumption. To overcome this drawback, it is possible to apply the multifactor dimensionality reduction (MDR) method. MDR uses Machine Learning to search for the best combinations of variables. This makes it possible to create a model that simplifies the analysis of the data studied. From the whole set, the combination of variables that best describes the study is selected, grouping them into high or low risk. It has been proven that in this way it is possible to better understand and optimise engineering activities. MDR can be used in numerous engineering analyses: energy consumption, equipment maintenance, waste generation, etc. This research has been supported by the European Regional Development Fund through the Research Project GR21098 linked to the VI Regional Plan for Research, Technical Development and Innovation of the Regional Government of Extremadura (2022).peerReviewe
