This article introduces an innovative educational proposal focused on the use of educational escape rooms to teach Social Psychology, with a particular emphasis on the analysis and reflection on stereotypes. This approach, grounded in service learning, aims to develop collaborative, communicative, and empathetic skills in social education students through a descriptive methodology. A convenience sample of 41 students, selected for their willingness to participate in a specific workshop designed for this study, will be used. The proposal involves students in the design and development of escape rooms that incorporate challenges and puzzles centered on stereotypes, promoting a practical application of theoretical knowledge. This pedagogical methodology intends not only to enhance the understanding of key Social Psychology concepts but also to provide a more participatory and stimulating educational experience. It is anticipated that active interaction and practical focus will significantly improve knowledge retention and analytical and problem solving skills. The project also includes a phase of continuous evaluation, in which specific instruments will be used to collect feedback on students’ cooperation and communicative effectiveness, as well as the impact of the experience on their learning and perception of stereotypes. This data will help verify the effectiveness of the escape room as an educational tool and its ability to modify pre-existing perceptions. This approach emerges as a dynamic and effective methodology for teaching complex social issues, such as stereotypes. It is expected that this methodology will not only actively involve students but also serve as a practical environment for reflection and social action, thereby enhancing their critical analysis skills and empowerment for civic action.peerReviewe

On Political dream teams and Financial killers: Sports Anglicisms and Metaphorical Uses in Spanish Digital Press

    No full text
The presence of English borrowings is becoming frequent in Spanish. This paper deals with the use of Anglicisms, including some cases of pseudo-Anglicisms and hybrid formations, in sports. The analysis of the digital edition of various Spanish newspapers, using the Anglicisms search tool ‘Observatorio Lázaro,’ has revealed a variety of functions that are fulfilled by these English(-looking) lexical items, such as their metaphorical uses. This study provides examples of new compound terms as well as hybrid formations and clippings, among others, some of which intend to have certain pragmatic meanings, e.g. being euphemistic or producing ironic and humorous effects on the reader. In addition, it is worth mentioning the usage of English football nicknames that seem to be getting more and more familiar to the Spanish sports audience. The orthographic inconsistency of many of the collected sport-related words is also examined and evidences the recent incorporation of these terms into Spanish.peerReviewe

Use of Technology and Implementation of Blended Learning in English Language Teaching

    No full text
However, significant differences were found in Learning Self-Regulation (p < 0.05, d = 0.4) and Academic Coping Self-Efficacy (p < 0.05, d = 0.5), with higher scores in the Blended group. These findings suggest that while the teaching modality does not affect some variables, it influences self-regulation and coping self-efficacy in academic challenges. The Blended modality may provide a more favorable environment for developing academic coping skills.peerReviewe

    No full text
Consumer awareness on how food is produced, the effects of food consumption on health and the environment is growing, and with it the importance of sustainability and sustainable production. In this context, fruits are one of the healthiest and most demanded food products, but also, they are highly perishable, requiring the use of chemical preservatives to extend their shelf life. The latter is inconsistent with consumer demands for healthy and sustainable food products and paves the path for the development of natural harmless preservatives. Therefore, it was deemed necessary to study consumers’ preferences towards different factors determining a sustainable approach in fruit production and distribution, such as the use of natural preservatives, the local/regional origin, or the organic production. Results reveal a growing interest in society for the use of natural versus artificial preservatives, linked to the increasing awareness of their benefits for health and the environment. However, there are also barriers that prevent these novel products from becoming more extended, such as the existence of a price premium which may turn many consumers away. This study was funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, the Spanish Research Agency (MCIN/ AEI/10.13039/501100011033) and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) “A way of making Europe”. Improving the strength of β-TCP scaffolds produced by Digital Light Processing using two-step sintering

    No full text
Digital Light Processing is combined with two-step sintering to obtain bioactive scaffolds with improved strength and mechanical isotropy. Highly loaded photosensitive suspensions were prepared from β-TCP powder to create scaffolds consisting of interpenetrating struts with two different designs. Two sintering methods were used: conventional sintering (CS) and two-step sintering (2SS). The latter resulted in a microstructure with uniformly shaped grains and reduced porosity. Their compressive strength was determined by uniaxial testing under two different load configurations, with the force applied parallel or perpendicular to the building plane of the scaffolds. Design optimisation and fine-tuning of the sintering process helped in reducing the presence of interlayer defects and minimise the shear-dominated fractures. Isotropic fracture behaviour was achieved, with similar central values of the Weibull distribution (49 ± 1 MPa vs. 51 ± 1 MPa) along both testing directions, showing a great potential for their use in load-bearing bone tissue engineering applications.CzechNanoLab project LM2023051 funded by MEYS CR is gratefully acknowledged for the financial support of the measurements/sample fabrication at CEITEC Nano Research Infrastructure.

    No full text
An early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are crucial to prevent fractures in patients with osteoporosis. Bone mineral density is the gold standard used to determine quality of bones and evaluate their health. Examining the thickness and shape of the jaw bones on panoramic X-ray images may be beneficial in identifying patients who may have osteoporosis. A great number of studies have evaluated and validated the effective and reliable use of both the width and morphological characteristics of the mandible. The objective of this work is to determine whether bone mineral density in the jaw experiences reductions like those of the lumbar spine and femoral neck in a Spanish postmenopausal population and to determine the possible association between the degree of resorption of the mandibular cortex obtained by orthopanthography with BMD values obtained by DXA, ultrasound and pQTC. The conclusions of this work would show a positive relationship between mandibular and hip bone mineral density, with no association with other measurement areas or techniques. Mandibular bone mineral density allows the establishment of diagnostic models for low bone mass that have moderate specificity and sensitivity. Studies carried out with larger sample sizes are needed to consolidate this evidence in the Spanish female and male population, incorporating anthropometric, biological and habits and lifestyle factors into the mathematical models developed to predict the risk of low bone mass

    No full text
The Statute of Autonomy of Extremadura was approved on February 25, 1983. This event, became one of the most important that took place in the region in the first years of democracy, was widely followed by the two newspapers that then had their scope of action in the two provinces of Extremadura: Hoy (Badajoz) and El Periódico Extremadura (Caceres). This Final Degree Project aims to examine the journalistic discourse they offered, in order to know the representation, they made of this news event. This way, using a historical, quantitative and qualitative methodology, we have studied the extent of such news coverage, the idiosyncrasy of the journalistic companies, the expressive modalities used, as well as the different editorial positions. The results show that Hoy's coverage responded better to the quality criteria that characterized the journalistic work and that, in spite of the coincidence of both newspaper companies in terms of their ideological line –confessional and conservative press–, they received different opinions, largely conditioned by the geographic location of the headers.Memoria del proyecto, 58 p. Offline and online peer assessment in computer engineering: Insights from a 5-year experience

    No full text
Peer assessment has traditionally represented a key tool to enhance active learning and critical thinking. However, the success of this approach is governed by different factors, which have been accentuated in recent years. The implementation of peer assessment is consequently a challenging task in the current context. This work investigates peer assessment strategies in seven Computer Engineering courses. Students’ performance and assessment accuracy are analyzed throughout five academic years, covering the transition from offline to online methodologies according to the evolution of educational environments. More specifically, peer and lecturer’s grades are examined to identify correlations or deviations in two execution phases. The first phase involves the analysis of in-class offline peer assessments during four academic years, integrated as part of continuous assessment tasks. The second phase deals with the evaluation of online peer assessments in 2021/2022, considering different platforms to manage submissions and reviews. The offline experience denotes statistical correlations between the grades assigned by the peers and the lecturer, while also revealing patterns that affected the performance of students. In addition, the switch to online methodologies does not significantly affect the assessments in courses that adopted peer strategies in the past. Finally, comparable results are obtained under single-blind and double-blind models after careful training. This work was partially funded by the MCIU (Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, Spain), the AEI (State Research Agency, Spain), and the ERDF (European Regional Development Fund, EU), under the contract PID2019-107299GB-I00/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 (Multi-HPC-Bio project). Contemporary dimensions of Ubi sunt?: the poetry of Álvarez Ortega

    No full text
Ubi sunt? is a long-lasting topos that remains relevant in contemporary Spanish poetry, especially in the post-war era. In the case of Manuel Álvarez Ortega, it reinforces the elegiac tones: the end of passionate love, the decline of bodily vigor, the death of loved ones, the downfall of the household. In his social criticism works, ubi sunt? suggests that even injustices come to an end. The poet paves a path to overcome pessimism by valuing memory and the written poetry that captures it, thus avoiding the ultimate loss of love and experiences.peerReviewe
